Painting the engine bay. Did I just mess up? Part 42.

  • Hey Gang, I'm making more progress on the Mach 1 Cobra Jet. I wanted to spry the engine ay with the paint provided by the owner. It just didn't look right so I redid it my way. I used information from Jerry Heasley to help make my decisions. I used products from PPG, 3M schutz, and BASF. Good things are coming.

I agree that flat or satin looks way better.Gloss is simply too distracting plus it shows irregularities that you would not normally notice. She looks wonderful, I hope we get to follow her journey all the way to completion whatever path that takes. You truly have great skills, patience (considering you had to scuff and repaint the engine bay twice) and respect for the car itself to ensure it will be the best it can be. this is getting exciting

The Mustang engine compartment looks great Barry, you are a true perfectionist. I used Dupont Imron on my 1965 Mustang Fastback in 1983 and on my 1966 Mustang Fastback engine compartment in 2005, as it is chemical resistant, and chip resistant and used on Airplane's and Fleet Semi's. I mainly wanted to prevent brake fluid from eating up the paint, that happened to me on my engine compartment before my friends dad who was the lead painter at Flyers Body Shop in San Jose sprayed it for me in 1983, I sprayed the Dupont Imron paint myself in 2005, as my friends dad passed away from lung cancer in the 1990's.

What about all the brackets for fuel, brake, wiring, heatshields, plastics etc? That stuff kept my project on a grill for two more months.

This is ALSO where your conscience comes into play. You could have just said whelp this is what he sent but your thought process said beyond that. So wish Charles could see your continued effort to create what he wanted within the constraints you were given after the fact. 👍💯👊

Semi Gloss is the way to go. Cleans up easier and will fade a little over time.

Very nice! I’ve had great success gun spraying that rust oleum by thinning with acetone. Levels out better and dries even. Great progress

After watching this last time, I was at that same point in my Boss rebuild. I had 3 cans of Satin Krylon and 3 cans of the rustolium, the later looks amazing. Thank you. Again I'm at the exact same spot as you.

Spent all that time just to rattle can? Use PPG AUE400-LG single stage satin is the correct sheen for that bay.
