  • LIVE TRIAL: SC v. Nathaniel Rowland Trial - Alleged Murder Of Samantha Josephson
Nathaniel David Rowland, 27, stands trial for allegedly murdering Samantha Josephson, 21. Court is held in Richland County, South Carolina.
Josephson, a student at the University of South Carolina, got into a vehicle that she believed was her Uber in the early morning of March 29, 2019, according to police. She was found dead in Clarendon County the next day, stabbed more than 30 times.
Rowland was pulled over in his Chevy Impala, and he ran, officials have said. Josephson’s phone and blood were in the car, investigators said. There were also cleaning supplies, with the child locks engaged, according to authorities.
“I can not fathom how someone could randomly select a person, a beautiful girl and steal her life away,” Samantha’s mother Marci Josephson said in a statement to the court in 2019, according to Live 5 News. “His actions were senseless, vile and unacceptable. It sickens us to think that his face was the last thing that my baby girl saw on this earth.”
Samantha’s parents started the #WhatsMyName campaign and is working to pass “Sami’s Law” in South Carolina, which would require ride-share drivers to be clearly identified before passengers enter the vehicle.
Rowland’s family has insisted on his innocence. He was passed out at a house party the night Josephson was abducted, his cousin Trey Elmore told South Carolina newspaper The State in an April 2019 report.
Rowland’s father Henry Rowland shared the second-hand story with WACH around the same time. In this account, Nathaniel Rowland woke up to find his keys were gone, but discovered his vehicle outside. The keys-and blood-were inside. His father said that if this story were true, then it was a mistake not to call 911. It was also a mistake to run during the traffic stop.

She was making a big deal about Rowland getting stopped when he drove the wrong way down a one-way street, and glossed over the fact that running off is not a good idea in that situation. Rowland was lucky not to have been shot. She moans about this cctv footage that the police did not request- they probably didn't need it- but it didn't occur to her or the rest of the defence team to acquire it as part of the defence. She also seemd to make a big deal about Rowland not getting apprehended until this traffic stop; it's actually quite common for serious offenders to be caught as a result of routine police work. For example the Yorkshire Ripper (English serial killer) was caught after being apprehended for a minor motoring offence.

By the rules of her profession, she had no choice but to get up there and zealously defend her client. She'd have to do that even if she didn't want to, or if she was also convinced of his guilt herself (which she most likely was). What's is your point. I wasn't sure what you're trying to say with that statement. His DNA was under her fingernails. And her DNA was everywhere in his car. Hair, blood, and skin cells.

@@JJ_Justice I was responding to someone saying that she hadn’t SCRATCHED him, that he didn’t have any scratches on him so how can his DNA be under her nails. My point was that she could have just TOUCHED him in order to have his DNA on her, even under her nails.

Exactly. Some people have 2 phones, and would definitely use them both at the same time, especially if it was too form an alibi, or push a different narrative. On the flipside of that, most intelligent people know, phones ping off towers if switched on.

After watching most of her closing I have to say for the most part she did a decent job with the awful situation she was dealt. Pointing out that he had no injuries after such a brutal attack was a good point and I could see that giving some jurors pause. Of course, from the post attack ATM pictures he seemed dressed prepared for what he was going to do that night by hiding his identity and that would have also prevented injuries to his body. But still in that kind of fury it may seem likely that a body part of his would be exposed during the attack. Defense attorneys have an incredibly difficult job to do and it is disappointing that comments attack her for doing her job. People never appreciate them until they need them.
