      Wow great review.. now I know the reason behind the DEF Delete.. those parts must be trouble in the making and once that holder fills up I assume that is gonna nearly bankrupt me.. Unless there is a drain/clean out plug it is best to get the DEF Delete System put in early on my New Diesel.. I have 12000 miles now.. wonder how much soot it has in the holding tank?

    • @johnthemechanic3360
      @johnthemechanic3360  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Mark thanks for watching 👍 The DPF (diesel particulate filter) catches the soot- and it gets burned away there - either through driving or regeneration. So no need to drain or clean out anything system does it by itself. The DEF tank holds fluid needed to clean up tailpipe emission (Nox). Usually when they talk about “delete” it means u take out the whole after treatment system and u will blow the soot out of the tailpipe, and you have black exhaust smoke when u floor it. But as long as you keep DEF fluid in there the system good for at least 100k miles.

    • @Funky4me21
      @Funky4me21 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John, a year later and as I forecast above at 12,000 miles, a major issue with the DEF, or should I say, many issues with the DEF system, the tank, the SCR, and the DEF Fluid manufactures labeling of the box or bottles of DEF. Why? The DEF fluid from the start has a critical expiration date that is not labeled clearly if at all, on any of the boxes or bottles. I even asked the sales people and the manager at an major Auto Parts Store what the Manufacture date was on a box of the Lates Premium Blue DEF and if it was expired as DEF will ruin a $10,000 system, and you may never find out why you have to pay so much to get a Bad system repaired. No one new the answer, The DEF tank installed on the Nissan Titan and possibly all DEF systems, has no way to drain it if you suspect for some reason your truck has sat too long. So the DEF fluid system may inject or try to inject bad fluid into the SCR which could be cause for a major failure that will leave you stuck in Limp mode in the middle of a desert if your there.. or out somewhere without Cell phone coverage in sub zero temps with a truck full of kids. All of which are major safety hazards not yet identified by the highway safety department which I will be working getting them to realize the safety issues very soon.. "Frozen Kids found in Truck". Possibility for failure are very real and I have experienced a couple of them just because of a very bad design by Nissan to satisfy EPA with a system that is much worse environmentally than even a straight pipe coming off the engine due to regens, more pollution from discarded old DPF systems, plastic from the empty containers of DEF and it goes on and on.. I have 23,000 miles on a truck with a "best $4000 guess" NOT UNDER WARRANTY" (due to living in a No emission testing state.) If replacing the SCR I am sure the dealer will need to keep throwing parts on at my cost. So it is a no win situation for me.. Truck is shined up and engine bay is spotless, interior and outside spotless, I put some money in a high end Diamond Back Bed Cover and rear window guard... Brand new Michelin 70,000 mile tires etc.. I am not a happy Nissan owner and I told Nissan Manufacture Customer service so, they do not care. Never again Nissan... this was going to be my retirement truck as I retired this year... now I have to find.

      @@Funky4me21 I think all this aftertreatment technology is just an excuse to make a nice stack of cash out of the public, and kill off diesel engines. It's a total joke....but it's NOT funny financially, having to repair this stuff when it goes wrong.....
      And like you say, it's totally more damaging to the environment.

    Thanks for a well detailed explanation of the DPF system John I almost bought the XD Diesel last year but this diesel after treatment system point me to buy a gasser and gave me and idea that this modern diesels with DPF are not so short journey friendly than old timer diesels my first and last diesel powered vehicle was an 2005 Honda Accord with 2.2 i-CTDi (in England, UK) and i love that engine no regen of some sort but 2 yrs later Honda introduced the updated version with DPF and all hell break lose. By the way John whats the life span of the system? still considering buying one but I don't do a lot of highway miles.

    • @johnthemechanic3360
      @johnthemechanic3360  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! Theoretically system supposed to last the life of the truck, I believe at least a 100k warranty through Nissan on parts but I’d have to double check. But u are right short trips and not driving long enough to heat up the system seems to clog them up a lot faster. They actually recommend highway driving and towing to burn the soot. When they do clog u must take to dealer and do stationary regen with computer hooked up.

    I have 37,000 miles and waiting for my dealer to get parts to replace my unit already. My service manager told me yesterday that he would have talked me out of purchasing my truck if he had seen me prior to my getting it. I’ll make a vid on it soon. Hopefully u don’t have any more problems. Thanks for watching!

    John, after getting "DPF filter overloaded, Immediate service required" I removed DPF and cleaned it. Manual calls for Service Re-generation procedure. What is it, and how it can be initiated by the owner? Thank you.

    • @johnthemechanic3360
      @johnthemechanic3360  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You shouldn’t have to remove it to clean it, There is two types of regeneration active and passive. Active regeneration is when you take it to the dealer they hook the computer up and do it that way it’s real thorough. Passive happens automatically when you’re driving around generally highway driving. Stop and go driving clogs them up big time. Regeneration just burns off all that black soot . Thanks for watching

    John, I have a 2016 Titan XD SL 2WD. I have taken to dealership twice and neither time they could figure this out. My DEF meter on the driver display is not showing even after selecting in menu options to show. I just realized the other day it is also not showing the exhaust temperature getting warmer after driving for an hour on highway. I haven't had any warning lights that DEF is low. The engine only has 10k miles on it. The previous owner blew long block so they replaced and put a wiring harness in as well.... What do you think I'm missing? Is it a sensor that's out?
    Update** I found the wire connector on the DEF wire connection for the Decomp was loose and the locking mechanism was broken, could this be the problem?

    • @johnthemechanic3360
      @johnthemechanic3360  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it sounds like a wiring problem, a lot of harness go bad on those. And if they not installed properly it can be a nightmare. I’d take it back and tell them to recheck it. If something is unplugged there will be a code for it in system

      Hey sorry I didn’t get back sooner I didn’t see the comment for some reason. I know there is a temp sensor on the EGR that measure exhaust temp b4 it mixes with the intake charge air, but b1 sensor 1 is most likely the DOC intake temp sensor ( # 2 in video)- that is first one that reads exhaust gas temp after it has left the engine. There is 5 total on after treatment system- #2 - #4 -#7 - # 12 & # 14 in video. They all reading exhaust gas temp. Hope it helps thanks for watching!
