I love your reviews! I want to say, that this movie to me was saying a lot ! Similar to how Silence of the Lambs explores gender and sexuality, I think this movie is exploring religion and gender politics. I’m still trying to wrap my head around it all but I think there’s a significance to having Bill Clinton framed in Agent Carter’s office and the framed image of Raegan in the Camera family’s home and how their policies are radically different when it comes to the freedom of choice in creating a family. I think the relationship between Lee’s mom and her mom’s motivations having to do with Lee’s chance to “grow up” really points to this general theme of anti-abortion laws and the implications it has for a lot of families. It’s implied that all the families that were murdered were practicing Catholics. They were all murdered by the patriarchs. Arguably very similar to how in current American society, not only is abortion prohibited through the church but now it’s being translated into federal law with the reversal of Roe v. Wade - removing women’s ability to choose whether or not to have a baby once it’s been conceived. The dolls being referred to as “a gift from the church” is a direct parallel to the way a fetus is often referred to as a baby/gift from God. In the film, we know that Lee’s mom is lying and that the doll carries the essence of longlegs/the devil. In the world, scientifically, a fetus is not yet a baby but an IDEA/not an actual baby. How the dolls are REPLICAS of the family’s children and not the actual child. It could be a reach but that’s what I think one of the themes of the film is. Especially because there’s such an emphasis on the mother/daughter dynamic and the way the dark essence within the orb causes the patriarchal figure to commit the violence. Also just that whole scene with the Camera family - with Carrie Ann discussing how her mother always seemed to treat her funny because “she made her bleed so much” and the emphasis on her C-section. That same phrase about bleeding a lot came up again with Lee’s own mother and really made me think about birth/motherhood and choice.
That is so clever.I really like and appreciate, your explanation. Do you think that Longlegs ,had been living with Lee's mum,the whole time?I do wonder why Lee was chosen, when there didn't seem to be a Dad on the scene? So many questions x
I love this interpretation! I've been trying to figure out what Perkins was trying to tell us with this film's whole children/adulthood/religious themes. And why he focuses so much on that Bill Clinton photo!! 😂 The C-Section part was interesting too..maybe the devil is targeting families where one or both parents didn't really want to have a child, but felt pressure to go through with the pregnancy? Perhaps that makes them easier targets? They kind of set this up with Agent Carter as well and hint that he spends a lot of nights out drinking instead of being home with his family. His interactions with his wife and child were weird throughout the movie. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
The 3rd act and last 40 mins were the best part of film and pay off. Didn’t fizzle at all. Creepy tension and build up, subtleties led to it. Not every thing needs to be clear and explained, mystery is better. And are you sure those things or hints didn’t come back around just missed it or wasn’t what you were thinking originally
I liked Longlegs overall...It's one of those atmospheric movies that doesn't have to say anything, doesn't have a specific message its trying to convey, it just wants you to immerse yourself into this weird, creepy universe with a mega crazy character. I LOVED the final scene with Blair Underwood and his family. It was sick and twisted with a lot of dark humor thrown in. Underwood's performance throughout was great, especially once he became possessed. I honestly loved the supernatural 'Devil Orbs" idea...sure it made absolutely no sense, and it doesn't have to since we can't explain the unexplainable. How did Longlegs infuse bits of the devil's essence into those metal orbs to influence them to do his bidding? I don't know...nobody knows lol, but it was interesting. I the end, it was just a weird little freaky indy horror/suspense film.
Excellent review! I don't have much to say about this one as I AGREE with you. I saw NO trailers/teasers and was sold alone on the early buzz from people on my Twitter feed. So much so that I went to my local AMC's day early showing which was in a smaller theater but appeared to be an almost sold out showing. The entire film I thought LOOKED absolutely gorgeous! The shot composition in each frame was stunning. So at no point was I ever bored because I really was admiring how each frame/selection of camera angle was. This might just be a personal fault on my part due to being a lifelong fan of the genre, but during the first 30-45 minutes I did think to myself "Oh yeah, I can totally see why people were saying it's on par with Silence of the Lambs & Zodiac. This would make a good double bill with one of those." Unfortunately, by film's end I definitely thought to myself, Longlegs isn't on the same level with the previously mentioned films. The story or the why is where perhaps I found this to not be scary and thought was kind of a copout. Why did the Devil have to be the cause of it all? This might just be me, but bringing in that supernatural aspect kind of killed the scariness for me. Also, LOVE how you seem to be annoyed by exposition dumps as I find that to be a result of lazy story telling as well. Referring back to SOTL & Zodiac, those movies I don't think were trying to be "the most terrifying movie ever" and still scare me to this day because both of those are grounded in reality, I mean Zodiac was real AND never caught...that's scary! I thought the acting by all the performers was great, even Cage. However, a good portion of my theater would laugh/giggle every time Cage was on screen. I assume these movie goers are fans of watching compilations of Cage going "full Cage". It was annoying. What do you think of all the hyperbolic statements made by online movie critics/figures that were made prior to the film's wide release that led to the buzz that sold folks like myself to make sure I saw the movie IMMEDIATELY upon release? Afterwards, I questioned, do these folks REALLY think LL is the exaggerated statement(s) they made or were they just saying that in hopes of getting their quote put on the poster or shared as part of the movie's advertising campaign.
I'm sure there are incentives for early reviewers who give glowing reviews, whether that's exposure or other benefits from the studio. It's all part of the marketing plan, which Neon definitely went all out for Longlegs! Have you seen the website they built for the movie? It's creative and creepy and offers way more to the mythology of LL than the film gives you! I agree the supernatural element felt like a cop-out. I think having Nic Cage and the mom doing the killings of their own will would have been a more effective way of showing evil in our world. Blaming it all on the "devil" is not that interesting.
I agree with having a more difficult time with the supernatural aspect, but specifically with them thinking she was psychic I feel like was supposed to dissolve after you realize that she’s the girl from the beginning and she has a closer relation and understanding of him. She forgot things or hasn’t knowingly acknowledged things based on trauma. That part as least felt like it was explained, at least for me.
I guess I wish they had brought that element of her character into the narrative in a significant way at the end before she lost those abilities. I'm only saying that because her being psychic is how the film introduces us to her character at the beginning. The repressed memories make more sense to me.
It reminded me of a Stephen King adaption, one of his weirder ones. Psychic powers, familicide, the devil, ect... definitely felt like something Stephen King would have written. I guess that would be good or bad thing depending on how much you like Stephen King.
Great review. I really enjoyed the visuals even though they seem to have lifted much of the aesthetics from True Detective. The sound design was also fantastic. It had some of the best use of noise to create an immersive environment since probably Ravenous (1999). Cage's performance was great as was Witt's. Basically everything except the story was good. That was why the third act voiceover was necessary to deliver the plot since it lacked anything resembling proper storytelling. I almost wonder if there is a director's cut which is actually decent similar to the original theatrical release of Donnie Darko being a bit messy while the later cut is a cult classic.
LongLegs was pretty good, but the ending felt unfinished, leaving me puzzled with a long list of questions. I feel what wouldve made it better, was a longer movie! At least, 2 & half-3 hours. I think we need big movies such as this to be longer to fill in the gaps hahahaha😵💫💥 P.S. I danced my way outta the theater to that particular song, & this much older couple saw me & probably thought, what the?🤣🤣
The satanic theme was there from the start. Baphomet was in the background a number of times. I don’t feel like we had anything that was forgotten about.
I appreciate your review. I’m guilty of going in with major expectations and ultimately being let down. But I’m glad I am not the only one. The questions you had I had. Visually the film is stunning. But third act falls apart. Cage is great. But added a camp factor I thought worked but took me out of the film. Again…thank you I was starting to feel like I didn’t get it
Hi Kat.Great review. You summed it up,so well.I walked out of the cinema, wondering, if I enjoyed the movie or not because it seemed that the first two sections, of the film, was good but the last part was,a let down. They nailed the atmosphere and the visuals. The first scene,I really didn't expect to see Long legs so soon but it was so clever, how they showed him and it was the first of many jump scares and that uncomfortable feeling of dread. They didn't need to show Long legs in entirety and when they did,I was thinking about the prosthetics but then the character says or does something, that is chilling and you get back into it.I do think that there was so many plot holes, questions to be answered .I was disappointed because the marketing for the trailers had been so well done.I am glad that I saw it in the cinema because I don't think I would have appreciated, the atmosphere the film makes and I might of laughed at Nic Cages performance, if I was watching it at home. How would you, have re done the plot? X
Thank you! I believe that the story needed better character motivation and a clearer understanding of the mythology of this world. I think more time should have been spent developing Longlegs, the mom, and Lee's character motivations. Perhaps leaving more of the supernatural aspects up to interpretation would have been better. The best supernatural horrors are still grounded in some sense of reality, like "The Omen" and "The Exorcist." It feels like this movie took the easy way out by attributing everything to the "devil," which results in very passive characters.
I think she was psychic because of the those Satan balls in those dolls, her doll. The supernatural aspect wasn’t great, was expecting a more down to earth serial killer story. Should have expected it to be disappointing, given how the director’s previous movies end on a disappointing and hollow note. Great vibes and directing but the writing always shits itself at the end.
I think I was hoping for something more grounded and believably tangible as well. For them to sum it up to the devil possess and manipulating people in doll vessels was a bit of a letdown of a payoff.
I guess I'm wondering why Satan would give her those abilities through the orb? Why not just have her have repressed memories? Did he want her to be able to become a top FBI agent? I get that the mom made a deal with the devil to keep Lee from being killed, but it seems like the devil is still controlling her in some way through the doll, so why wouldn't he just make her one of his minions?Sorry for the questions! Just trying to figure out what I missed here...😅
One thing I think you completely missed while watching the movie was that Harker’s “psychic” abilities were due to her doll that Longlegs had made of her with the satanic evil inside the little metal orb in it… as soon as her mom shoots the head off the doll and the black evil smoke escapes from the blown off doll head, it took away her psychic abilities.
I understand that when they shoot her doll, it triggers her to remember everything, but I still question why? Why give her those abilities in the first place?
@@KatsHorrorCornerlonglegs needed to die around the time of the last murder to be reborn as the anti-christ. Lee’s mom and longlegs celebrated Lee going into law enforcement bc that was his plan. He used his psychic connection with Lee to get her on the case, find him out, he dies, then is reborn into the anti-christ. He told her his plan from the beginning of the case with the birthday card he left her. Those are the first few lines that describe the first iteration of the anti-christ in the bible.
I also didn’t like the supernatural ending. But I think the theme might be something along the lines of childhood trauma. Often children cope with experiencing or witnessing trauma by simply blocking it out or convincing themselves that x never happened. of course lee didn't look at her mother, because she was never allowed to look in the first place: either by the perpetrator of her trauma, or by what was very literally her own "brain".
I think you're right. I read an interview with Perkins after posting this video, and he talked about how issues in his childhood inspired Longlegs. Certain plot choices made a lot more sense after reading his story.
One thing that kind of took me out of the film was the strange actions of Lee. Her actions were frequently at odds with what any law enforcement agent is trained to do in the field. Blindly running towards danger time after time. Taking “cover” in front of a window. Her character choices were at best foolish and at worst poorly written.
I liked the acting from everyone. It was directed well and great camera shots. It's creepy and eerie throughout the movie. The female FBI agent was really good and I liked following her story. The 90's throwback was cool. I didn't like the second half of the movie because of what they decided to add into it. I started losing interest in the story. Nicholas Cage's performance could have been better. I was more disappointed than happy.
Sounds like you desperately need to have a conversation with Osgood Perkins 🤔 I thought this was a decent thriller. I gave it a solid 6.5, 7 out of 10.
There's no denying that the film is beautifully shot and captures the grunge nature of the setting, the issues reside with the screenplay and director's choice mainly for the 3rd act.
