Another interesting detail: The Woman in Profile's first appearance was in 1961, the same year that Yuri Gagarin was the first man to orbit the earth. It's already been established in the series that space is "their" domain, so it seems like this is implying that when we invaded (for lack of a better term) "their" domain, "they" retaliated and began to invade ours. *edit* Yuri Gagarin orbited the Earth for the first time on April 12, 1961. The Woman in Profile's first recorded sighting was June 13, 1961. There's definitely something there, and I can't wait to see how much further Kris Straub takes this story.
I think the distinction between "Alien Horror" and "Cosmic/Lovecraftian Horror" is what is supposed to be scaring you. With aliens, it's the aliens themselves that are meant to be frighting. With cosmic horror, while it can have aliens, the fear is more focused on the unknown and/or the insignificance of man kind in the infinite universe.
As example, Alien is "Alien Horror" about a Xenomorph, a creature that's physically very dangerous but can technically be fought with a gun. Whereas Comsic horror tends to be more about the scale and insignificance of humanity, it tends to include if not directly lean on existential fear or humanity's limited ability to understand the "true nature" of the universe around us.
Not only that but the way they "attack and conquer" is completely different. Aliens are a quick, violent invasion with lazer guns or brain sucking. Eldritch horrors is unintentional slow mental torture as they're so beyond our understanding and make us feel so insignificant they drive us insane.
I'm so happy that Local 58 is back, not because it was the original first Analog Horror before Mandela Catalogue, but also because it's been years since hear of that series.
I think he is heavily inspired by John Keel's other book "The Eighth Tower: On Ultraterrestrials and the Superspectrum." (John Keel wrote the Mothman Prophecies) He also rejects aliens, and then suggests Ultraterrestrials. And also things fading into and out into our perceived reality (like we live in a "superspectrum"). Like, if you read about it, it is pretty closely relating to it. I wrote another comment on it moments ago. I wish I could link it. But look into the book.
I feel like criticizing the community for hyperfixating on one specific theory would be a really weird thing to do if that theory was correct (or at least that the series was about aliens in general which is what he seemed to focus on).
I was on the subreddit a few years ago, and I recall he actually debunked the aliens theory... Well, I would rather say he debunked the "ET theory", because he didn't countradict when we pointed out that his "not aliens" answer was pointed as flying saucers theory, but that the word "alien" can also mean "foreign, weird" and not merely "from another world" So it won't be something as boring as "Martians are visiting us" but it's necessarily something as boring as "it's from Earth" either
I don't know if it would count as a Film Theory, but if you're digging up old theories, I would love to see the completed Petscop theory. Matpat promised a final episode years ago and never completed it. I think new videos have been added since then, too.
I second this, I was really only following the series through FT and I was confused why it just disappeared. I sorta forgot about it or assumed they wanted to move away from it until Mat talked about how it was a series he was sad he wouldn't get to finish. I would love a clean update on it!
The eyes on the sides for prey only really works for terrestrial animals. Aquatic predators have eyes on the sides of their head also so they can see more area that their prey is at since they can be in 3D spaces relative to the predator more easily than terrestrial animals
To be fair they are different: Aliens violently invaded planets for food or fun. Eldritch beings unintentionally drive people insane and make people question reality. Space is where the similarities between them end.
@Cooe. "Alien" and "Extradimensional Entity" carry very different implications in what they mean. It's the difference between the "Alien" franchise and Call of Cthulhu

Granted I first read Absol's description from a book before then, but I didn't know it was based off of something until later The Mothman legend is our world's Absol to summarize.
I LOVE the fact that this is based in Mason County, WV. I grew up in Jackson County not far from the border and I'm OBSESSED with Mothman. We have a festival for him each fall and Christmas lights of him every year! I even have the Mothman hoddie and t-shirt from Cloak's Cryptid Collection! Also another thing that was never mentioned in the film theory episodes to local 58 is that in "show for children", when the skeleton walks around the graveyard when it hasn't yet looked into a grave, the tree that it passes by naturally covers the moon, because the moon is further away than the tree. But when looking into the second grave, you can see the moon in the corner of sky when you look at it from the graves perspective. After looking into the second grave the moon gets darker and looks a lot more grim, and when the skeleton walks by another tree, the moon covers the tree, as if it was getting closer and closer, and in fact following the skeleton, as we can see when the skeleton lies in a grave that was dug in a cave, and yet the moon stares into the grave.
Film Theory should really do a theory on where the tornado from The Wizard of Oz would land on the Fujita scale. It must be an EF4 or 5 because it was able to lift up a whole house. Granted the house looked quite weak and was made out of wood so it probably weighed about 10,00 to 15,000 pounds. So it could be an EF3.

Regarding the mothman, it's notable that moths specifically use the light of the moon to navigate, which is why they get so confused around artificial lights at night. Moreover, what if certain types of reflections are the key to the interdimensional sightings? Cameras use reflection, and 'moonlight' is reflected sunlight. Maybe moon dust was used as a unique material on that camera?

*snap and nod*
New local 58 theory just dropped. My favorite
16:38 dang Lee you didn’t need to flame homie like that!
Love this video!!!! just found a new arg called the falling! Its brand new so it doesn't have much yet!!
1. Does the Woman In Profile remind anyone else of Janus, the two-faced roman god of choices? Could this plus the whole predator, prey and accomplice thing, be a way of telling people to choose a side?
2. Mothman. Moth. Creatures attracted to sources of light. Like, maybe, a bright light in the sky? The moon, perhaps?
Both very good points
I noticed that too
THIS IS SO COOL! THANKS FOR MENTIONING LOCAL 58 AGAIN, LEE!
if any analog horror series could bring me back to this channel, itself definitely local 58 🙏🙏🙏🙏
I love hearing about stories that we visited in the past
Ties everything together nicely
The definition of an alien is a foreigner. If they're not from this dimension they're still aliens. He is doing aliens.
Thank youuuu. Extradimensional makes them no less alien, and if he's going for more cosmic horror rather than Sci fi horror, again they're still aliens even if they are allowed a somewhat supernatural spin
I love how you connected this to societal fears; it makes the horror feel that much more real. 😬
15:20 So the G-Man?
Uhhh...
Shhhhh
I got the notification and nostalgia hit me like a truck. I love local 58.
Double it and give to the next

i haven’t watched film theorists in a long time but i loved the old local 58 videos and i will look forward to watch this one
Is the Hirsch Camera a reference to Gravity Falls maybe?
That's what I also thought :)
It's also in a “falls” place… “Ichor Falls”, monsters, multi-dimension, conspiracy…
Hey! I’ve been a fan of your channel for a very long time. Lately I’ve been obsessed with this series “From” and there’s a lot of mysteries to find out! Wish you could do an episode about it.
16:41 Is that Sloth?
At 3:29 they were Like "FILM THEORISTS TODAY WE STEAL THE LOCAL 58!!!!!!"
3:04 why does that look like Sirenhead
It drives me a little crazy that the creator made an entire video about literally extraterrestrial happenings and then acted like it's dumb to attribute that to aliens?? 😭
The moth man I think can predict when bad things happen so he haunts the town until the disaster happens
Yooo local 58 video out!!!
local 58 is back AND i get to listen to Lee's dulcet tones again? aw heck yeah
