I have a friend moving to our London office in about a month. Since she already accepted the offer I didn't have the heart to tell her that the U.K. is probably the WORST police state in the developed world. There's a lot that's great about the U.K. but Orwell is spinning in his grave.
I am Scottish but I spend my childhood between Scotland, England and Australia. I absolutely loved living in my village in Scotland, it was beautiful but there aren't much Job opportunities if you want a top career, many move down to London because there is not much options. The UK is actually really poor in other regions except from South England, everyone knows this and you find a lot of people migrating to the capital for work including foreigners, it leaves London overcrowded and grossly expensive and a difficult place to live. In Scotland, we get a lot of refugees but statistics show that within the first 2 years they have all moved to London. It's just going to get worse because everyone wants to live in London no one wants to live in the poorer parts of the UK eventhough we were poor growing up the landscape and people in my village were just beautiful, living in a small country is peaceful by not great if you are money hungry. I currently live in Australia, it is easy to find work here anywhere.
Uk is a "3rd" world country in europe and has a awful quality of life if your not rich.. Where even if you have a job your still poor.. Lots of brits are in denial about this...with there buildings looking like there about to crumble any minute

If you are unemployed you are 'bad' if you are in paid work you are 'good' It infuriates me and we this this represented in many media outlets. Work is important in a structured society but people need to realize it is not everything. I think we all need to relax in this country. There is too much anger, and I include myself.

Then there’s winter - freezing , raining, windy , Ice, cloudy , dark by 4pm - it’s so depressing . And then when you eventually get a good day but because you’ve been so depressed having been stuck inside because of the bad weather you find it hard to motivate yourself to go outside . Then if you live in the city when you go for a walk your breathing in all the crap air full of pollutants so your probably doing yourself more harm than good . I hate the UK- I mean it wouldn’t be a bad place if the weather was better and the days were longer in winter . That’s why a lot of people move abroad from here .
Honestly mate as someone who lives in the US, you don't want cloudless 24/7, I actually hate the sun here during the summer because it's just so constant and bearing down on you with 40-something degree celsius temperatures

I moved from the west of Scotland in 1981 to escape two things.Thatcherism and the bloody weather. Here in Ontario rain is no the problem it is the heat in summer and the cold in winter. Although in recent decades the winters have become far less severe.

I agree the UK is not a good place to live anymore. Why? Because the main emphasis in Britain is to support the "powerful" (from a capitalistic point of view of course) and the second emphasis is on superficial solutions rather than on sustainability and profound solutions. Well, it is never too late to change! Businesses should serve the public and not the opposite! I am so glad I moved from London to Vienna in Austria. Now I live in a great affordable flat (it is partly subsidised by the government - it is called a "Genossenschaft"). Even though my building (with direct access to a quiet subway and bus station) is almost built on a non-for-profit basis, it is a green, passive building and most of them are of higher quality than the commercial "luxurious" residential buildings they are now building in London from overseas investors in order to get rid of the "average" people in this town. Go Boris! ;-) Funny, isn't it? Pure capitalism can often lead to wasting a lot of money and resources. Besides that, I can enjoy great health care, fresh tap water form the mountains, a highly sophisticated social system, great infrastructure, lots of nature (2 forests alone in Vienna, wine gardens, lakes and rivers I can swim in over summer). High quality and not genetically modified food, and the list goes on and on. And I do not have to pay for every little thing like for example, renting a chair at a Park in London or sign up to pay for Wifi!!! By the way, in addition to this, the economy is also better! I earn more, have more money left in my bank account at the end of the month and live a much healthier lifestyle (more vacation, better food, etc.). Please do not get me wrong, I believe the overall situation is not good anywhere in the world at the moment due to many, many factors politicians as well as the general public worldwide do not dare to or do not understand to take into consideration.. But still, does not mean that some places cannot be better than others! I think the UK should stop focusing on imitating the US and instead look at countries with overall higher living standards like Austria, Germany, Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries. I do not know much about Australia and Canada, but they might be a very good places to live as well! The focus should be on increasing average living standards for everyone and not on BLIND ECONOMIC GROWTH. ONLY EMPATHY AND NOT EGOISM CAN LEAD TO PROGRESS IN HUMANITY AS WELL AS THE FOCUS ON QUALITY OVER QUANTITY.
Im from Glasgow which is often seen to be the worst city in the UK but i did some charity work in many places like Ukraine, Albania and Lithuania and i saw much worse places and i saw the effects of crime that you just would not get in Glasgow or anywhere else in the UK...

Actually I think one of our biggest problems is that Britons tend to love complaining. Despite problems im facing right now, I can genuinely say I never loose sight of the fact that there are many positive aspects about the UK. In Ireland at least people have good taste to music. From there comes some brilliant musicians and bands, like U2, Cranberries, Sinead O'Connor and Damien Rice.

Im by no means ignorant or uncritical of the problems we do have, but before everyone jumps on a UK-bashing bandwagon I would suggest they look at facts and not tabloid distortion of facts. Knive crime for example is a depressing issue, particularly since many of the victims are young, but London is much safer than Moscow, most US and South American cities and even several European cities including Amsterdam. My point is everything should be in CONTEXT. London has over 8 million people.

actually, the whites in south africa are not remotely a large minority - very, very small ~1%, and most of the other places you mentioned, whites are the MAJORITY, not a large minority.

It all depends on the persons lifestyle as with anywhere... The UK has pretty much the same problems as other MEDC's in Europe like France and Germany; such as high immigration rates. There are most likely other studies which show different results...
If we don't like what we have then it is up to us to demand things change, so get off your ass and get together with others to organize change locally or nationally. If we don't ask we don't get, so get asking, demanding and even protest NOW.

Polish guy here. I live in UK's countryside (Aylesford ) and its absolutely nice and quiet place to live so there's no point generalizing. Still I do get why these opinions circulate around as there are some dangerous places in UK where I wouldn't want to live.
I'm happier to live in a place with higher bills than a place with lower bills that will soon make the Muslim head garb illegal. Cheap fuel doesn't make a place good to live, in fact amongst my many issues here is car dependency, places with lots of cars are loud, dangerous, smelly and ugly! I would like to go somewhere where public transport and cycling infrastructure is good!
Actually I think one of our biggest problems is that Britons tend to love complaining. Despite problems im facing right now, I can genuinely say I never loose sight of the fact that there are many positive aspects about the UK.
We can openly criticise the government without fear of being roughed up by shady agents, we can campaign openly on issues we care about.... you get the idea (word limitation)

Yeah but we wouldn’t have to criticise the government in the first if we had a good one . I don’t think there are hardly any positives about living here except employment and free nhs (even though we pay for it in our taxes anyway) . But for me it’s mainly the weather . Yeah it’s fine when the weather’s good but most the time in England the weather is crap especially in the north where I live . I wanted to go for a long walk the other day and it was p***** it down all day and it’s mid summer - then we get tons of windy cloudy miserable days were it’s hard to motivate myself to even leave the house - the weathers so unpredictable in the uk . Then there’s winter - freezing , raining, windy , Ice, cloudy , dark by 4pm - it’s so depressing . And then when you eventually get a good day but because you’ve been so depressed having been stuck inside because of the bad weather you find it hard to motivate yourself to go outside . Then if you live in the city when you go for a walk your breathing in all the crap air full of pollutants so your probably doing yourself more harm than good . I hate the UK- I mean it wouldn’t be a bad place if the weather was better and the days were longer in winter . That’s why a lot of people move abroad from here .
In Ireland at least people have good taste to music. From there comes some brilliant musicians and bands, like U2, Cranberries, Sinead O'Connor and Damien Rice.

-We are actually one of the safest countries in the world when it comes to homicide rates. For example there are fewer than 100 gun-related murders per year- that is LESS than 1 per 1 million

You are right, people come to UK for money and career,learn now things .Just lower salaries in UK and you will see how quickly people will leave.Weather is one of factors to keep you happier.When sun is shining you can spend more time outdoor and enjoy life.When rain fall numbers are high what left to do is update facebook and stay in pub....I wish countries like Spain will get better so i enjoy good weather and lower cost of living.Why do All Brits go for holidays to France, Spain, Portugal?

I agree. I think people have a right to complain in a democratic society; iv'e certainly done my share but whatever problems we have, the UK is predominately a good place to live. I think the red top press play a very influential role in stirring up fear and anger. As you say when people say England (or the UK as a whole for that matter) is 'shit' they aren't objectively.... I feel like responding 'you mean we have the same problems as Darfur, Burma, Niger etc!?' Clearly we don't.

There are recovering warzones like the former Yugoslavia. Former Socialist countries with recovering economies Romania, Albania, Bulgaria ect and a country like greece which goverment is on the verage of failure and yet Ireland and the UK are the worst places to live in Europe? Im by no means ignorant or uncritical of the problems we do have, but before everyone jumps on a UK-bashing bandwagon I would suggest they look at facts and not tabloid distortion of facts. Knive crime for example is a depressing issue, particularly since many of the victims are young, but London is much safer than Moscow, most US and South American cities and even several European cities including Amsterdam. My point is everything should be in CONTEXT. London has over 8 million people.

actually, the whites in south africa are not remotely a large minority - very, very small ~1%, and most of the other places you mentioned, whites are the MAJORITY, not a large minority.
Only 2 things make it worth living in the UK.... the NHS and disability benefits (I'm disabled) - if it weren't for those things, I would probably live in Switzerland or something...

It all depends on the persons lifestyle as with anywhere... The UK has pretty much the same problems as other MEDC's in Europe like France and Germany; such as high immigration rates. There are most likely other studies which show different results...

Polish guy here. I live in UK's countryside (Aylesford ) and its absolutely nice and quiet place to live so there's no point generalizing. Still I do get why these opinions circulate around as there are some dangerous places in UK where I wouldn't want to live.
