    Fun story: the background visuals on the stage should've actually been the intro, but it looked crappy so I just smashed it there and called it a day!

    In the 3.1 Alpha version the "Curve Parameter" node doesn't exist. However, you can use the "Spline Parameter" node instead and connect the "factor" output of the "Multiply" node. This is configured around minute 6:00

      It seems like whenever I step away from Blender and want to refresh with a tutorial, the guide requires something that is missing from my version lol. Thanks for this. I had the spline parameter set aside just in case. Didn't spend too much time googling since there wasn't much info regarding the node being "missing" in 3.1. Thanks again!

      Thank you very much for the solution. Not sure if it' just me but using the "Spline Parameter" node can cause the curve lean over to the positive side of all axis. It could be sorted by adding a "Map Range" node between "Noise Texture" and "Multiply", set it from "Float" to "Vector" and set the three "To Minimum" value to -1.

    In case you're still curious after almost a year: "Tangent" in English comes from Latin, "Tangentem", which ultimately means, "To touch". This is similar to the English word, "Tangible", meaning something like, "Touchable".

    Great tutorial! The "curve parameter" being renamed "spline parameter" threw me for a bit.
    I also animated the thickness at the base by attaching the "end" parameter to a multiply by the .02 value and then addition node of .001
    My favorite is "vacuum cleaner tube that you have stepped on" or "drinking straw you chewed too much"

    Gotta say, I'm impressed. You explain this incredibly well! Now, I still don't understand all the math behind it and I couldn't do this without a tutorial, but I don't think I have EVER watched anything involving math and had this little confusion or didn't feel completely lost. So kudos to you, making me somewhat understand what is happening mathematically is quite the achievement!

    instead of a map range node for inverting the vector. try the multiply add node. Use the curve parameter as vector input, make multiplier (-1.0, -1.0, -1.0), and the addend (1.0, 1.0, 1.0). Basically the output is 1.0 - input, which is the same as what your trying to do. and probably simpler.

    the only note i would make is that realistically plants grow new leaves from the tip, very few plants bud from the stem, so the scale of the leaves should be inverted.
    at a quick glance you might assume the bigger leaves are on top but that’s because the new leaves are smaller and harder to perceive.

    Awesome tutorial, thanks! There is a little conceptual problem though. In real life, leaves appear small at the top of the stem, and they grow larger as the stem gets longer and sprouts new leaves. The leaves at the tip of the stem (branch) are always smaller than those further down. Look "plant growing" images and you will see that this is almost always true.

    • @lower_case_t
      @lower_case_t 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly my thoughts. It's easy to fix, though, by using a negative exponent in the "Power" math node or by leaving the exponent positive but using "1-Curve Parameter" instead of "Curve Parameter" as base.

      I'm not sure that is totally true, though. If you do look for references, there is a bit of both, and for a concept like this, I think this solution works great. Only thing would maybe be to have only the topmost leave be the one that grow, so that it will start as the smallest, but then grow big, but then there is another small starting to grow right over this again. Not sure if this is understandable, and it is not always how they grow, by all means. Really good work, either way, making this tutorial, Bad Normals! :)

    • @lower_case_t
      @lower_case_t 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@KnutEinarSkjr A nice way to deal with different growth rates at different plant ages is to map the curve parameter node to a black&white color ramp, and use that ramp's output value to control the actual leaf size. Then add a few sliders and set the regions where you want to limit the maximum size to a dark value, and the regions where you want them to grow larger to a light value.

    I was playing around and found that a Reverse Curve placed before the Set Curve Raduis achieves the same result as the Map Range (so it's a faster solution, but without the customability).
    EDIT: Hmmm, I didn't wait for the end. If you do what I did, you'll just end up needing the Map Range for the Curve Parameter by the leaves...
    EDIT: Ok, so one helpful thing I did find was to attach the Group Output that we used for all those variables also on the Set Curve Radius so the stem started thin and grew thicker at the base.
    Thank you for this!!! I didn't know it could be so accessible.

I feel that there may be a future for the teaching of mathematics by using programs such as these for the sake of people who learn math in a different way than pure number logic, or at least to create initial interest in mathematics so that when it's time to sit down and work out problems traditionally, it's not a shot in the dark as to whether an interest in the concepts stick for an individual.
