Thank you! You have some of the best tutorials on draping tailored garments. With your hyper-detailed approach and precise instructions everything is clear, no fancy camerawork and editing are needed. P.S. It's amazing just seeing how something that initially looked like a pod gradually takes shape and finally turns into a beautiful butterfly of a classical garment.
Thanks Sten...I'm so glad I followed ur advice & watched this video. It all makes perfect sense and was extremely informative! I would personally LOVE to see you drape a simple top with cap sleeve (for example) and then take us through the process of working the bodice and sleeve blocks, to sewing it and then showing the final product!!! I think it would be awesome....does anyone else agree lol ??? Thanks so much!
For a smaller size, you can drape as you normally do, but make the bust less pointy (i.e. smaller bust dart). Then afterwards cut away fabric at the armscye area (shoulder, front armscye and side seam) plus maybe remove some width by making larger waist darts and/or reducing the garment at the side seam. For a larger size, you can pad out your dress stand with shoulder pads at bust, shoulder, hips and behind area and wrap a (few) folded towel(s) tightly around the waist. Be sure to pin in place.
You are saving my life right now! Your instruction is so easy to understand, compared to my couture technique book. Thank you so much for making these videos!
Since I'm a keen pattern-maker myself, I perfectly know the feeling I think you're describing. Sometimes you just need to feel free and let yourself go. That's when draping comes in handy. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for taking time out of your life for sharing your videos. Also, I like the way you show different options for manipulating placement fabric of to give me more than one way of designing different looks.....you keep me wanting more,
I just found your video 5. Thank you so much for that. I have huge biceps and my altered commercial sleeves never sit well but with your method of draping I will surely master drafting my sleeves. I also subscribed and will follow you.
I just watch the video, yes you did answer to my question and tank you to do it so fast. For me it's the most difficult thing to do, especially when the jacket (or coat) is wide.
Hi Young Fan! It's actually muslin, but a good quality one I buy wholesale. It's a bit heavier and therefore also a bit stiffer and easier to pin - sometimes. You can get muslin in many different qualities. The softer one can be perfect if you want to drape a blouse, shirt or something else free-floating.
hi sten martin, its my fist time watching ur illustration.i really enjoyed the draping illustration. i seem to enjoy draping more than pattern making. your draping techniques are very brilliant and easy to understand.i wish i had you as an illustrator. please post more videos. cos i wanna be as good as u are or better in draping. so am gonna keep looking out for ur new videos.pls could u also lets see the finished product after being draped. thanks. hope to hear from u soon. bientot
Thank you Mr. Martin!!! I very appreciated what you showed in Videoklipp. I very happy that i can learn from you how to draping. I study pettern in Sweden school. I got inprov from you teaching. Thank again. Choke Andersson
Hello Carmela! And thank you for your comment! Darts will shape your garment to fit your body in a sleek manner. If removed, your garment will be flat, which also is okay if that's what one wants. What you can do is to "hide" the darts in a seam, divide them into multiple darts or ease. You could also just skip to sew it, and thereby get a larger armscye (and then you'll need a larger sleeve). Darts are discussed in many of the videos, but you can start with part 9, 11, 12 and the start of 15.
Amazing! I've been making my own clothes for over 10 years but never really understood how to drape properly - always stuck to drafting on paper. Thank you!
Thank you for your comment Ejeson! Since my goal with the series was to make draping more accessible, your comment actually made me quite happy! And yes, I will try to show the patterns after they're done. That makes good scene. See you soon!
A great idea, Marianne! Would be fun to do. Although I probably will save the sewing to my online tailoring class (ScandinavianTailoring*com/fashion). I'll see what I can do. And thank you for your comment!
Just found your videos and I love them! I subbed to your channel and I wanted to thank you for making these. I am a design student and I enjoy learning from your videos also! btw: don't worry if they are long, I'd watch them even if they are long bc then you don't rush and skip important details. Thank you so much for these, can't wait to check out the rest of them!
Hello Reyna! Thank you for your comments! Actually I've made a draping clip where it's done without the arm present. And the sleeve is made from scratch without drafting. Maybe take a look on that one would help? It's called "5. How to drape a basic ladies' jacket, the sleeve". Let me hear if it works out for you.
I think it's important to remember that fabric - mostly natural ones, but also leather - can be gathered, or, as we say, eased into shape. If you use that technique your creating and balancing of garments will be a lot more interesting than when just using darts and seams. That's why I always stress a combination of pattern-making AND draping. Pattern-making on it's own can often be a bit too "mathematical". Don't you think?
Oh thank you for sharing your talent. I have been trying to make a jacket for my daughter who is between a UK size 4 and 6...she also has a very tall torso with a curvaceous lower back. This will help tremendously. Thank you.
Jasmin Andrews - I'm so glad I could help, Jasmin! And thank you for your comment! I like the idea that draping can be used just to make clothes fit well too. Not only for "red carpet show stopping advanced designs". I like to see draping as a tool for shaping anything, and understanding how clothes actually can be and feel better. I wish you all the luck with your current project!
Hello alexburn100! Great suggestion! So I've just started to include this "after-work" process in the new episodes 14 and 15. I have avoided it earlier on, since it's very time-consuming, and a bit difficult to show with a fixed camera like mine. But I'll give it a try now. Let me here what you think about it!
I'm glad you liked it! There actually is already a tutorial on how to drape the jacket sleeve. You'll find it under the title "5. How to drape a basic ladies' jacket, the sleeve". And if you google "System.DTTA", you'll find another on-line tutorial of mine, on how to draw a basic pattern and then add width and collar as desired. Good luck with your new project!
Hi Sten I discovered you today I think you are fantastic how you teach I'm very happy that I found you. Now if I did not want any darts in this jacket do you have video's how to remove darts? or you have to have darts ?
Hi Sten, love your videos, so interesting and clear ! I have trouble with jacket without dart, do you have any advice ? avideo maybe ? Thank you so much !
Hi! Thank you for your comment alexburn100! Interesting that you pointed out how draping videos often stop with the ready pinned garment on the dress stand. As a decoration. (Or with a jump-clip to the already made dress!) So very true! Never thought about that since the process after just comes so natural to me. Thank you for pointing that out. I'll try to make it up to you.
Hi Sophie! Thank you! I included your question in the video "10. Requests!" and the jacket without dart starts at the end of the video (see description). I hope I got it right?
btw: could you teach how to drape a sleeve if you don't have an arm on the dress form? I always have trouble and have to pattern them, but it would save so much time if you knew a way to drape when there is no arm and don't want to pattern. Thanks!
I'm working on that, Wajia36. Just haven't found out how to film that yet - it's a bit tricky to film your hands, or a sewing machine. Any good ideas? Thanks for the positive comment though!
Thank you, already watched your first 3 videos and will continue watching. And could you give more description on your website courses? All are pattern making?or have something else? Thank you so much.Like your teaching style, very clear.I will try once i get the dress stand
Love it! Do I use it straight to my finished fabric? Or add more ease? What is the natural ease for jacket? And if I want to transform this pattern to coat, how many cm of ease do I add and what alterations should be done for this pattern?
Ok will try to do that thank you ! One last question I have a size 10 mannequin but its not the same size of my body how do I drape to fit for my body size instead of mannequin size.
wonderful video , so what happens next...my biggest confusion is what happens next? how do u take everything off the bodystand ,and finally sew it? usually draping videos stop as soon as theiy are done pinning evrything on the boyform, but to people who is so confused on how u remove all of this from the body stand without destroying everything is a complete confusion..if uncan actually make a video where the beggining of it will show the done part of draping and then will
sorry for the spelling..i mean bodyform not boy form..anyway, yeah pls make a video where u start on the done part of draping and u show us how u remove it from the body form and then finally sew it...if u can make a video like that it will really help a lot of those beginners who are really confused, jutst like me...thank you very much Sten...
I only saw one video, half-way through, before I knew I needed to subscribe to this channel. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.
I've been interested in pattern making for ages and until today I had no idea draping existed. I've learned so much from these videos. :) Thankyou.
mooology So glad you enjoyed the draping experience! I think a combination of draping and pattern-making gives the best result. Try system.dtta.dk
This is amazing thank you, I've always used patterns, I've never seen this before I'm so impressed! 😮😮😮
