  • How long does it take to get frostbite? Inspired by the polar vortex, childhood myths and a bitterly cold Michigan winter, we set out to find out more about frostbite, and just how dangerous going out in cold weather is.

    Stood outside in crocs with no socks at 38f with windchill, I felt the effects of frost bite starting to set in at the hour mark. Took 20 minutes to slowly warm my toes and they’re still hurting.

      I think you are telling fibs. Lol. It's impossible to get frostbite at 38f. Period.

      @@Mariiiam No lasting damage. Burned like fire to warm them and they were real sore for about 24 hours, otherwise I’m fine. Still have all my piggies. And they cute too

    Great summary on a genuinely local topic of late, to think "vortex" would become part of ones daily lexicon is enough to make me bundle up. Great job Risk Bites Team!

    What if your wearing shorts bare legged in extreme cold and waiting 2 to 5mins for a bus and the breeze is very light it would take 30mins or more to get frostbite and plus I take cold showers to get my skin used to the cold.

    I never want to live anywhere where I might get frostbite.
    But with all this climate change I might have to move continents.

      Global warming is good news for you then ..but just on average...our winter has been unusally cold and wet (i.e ice and snow)

    Weather reports in Canada include a wind chill factor to give an equivalent risk temperature.

    • @riskbites
      @riskbites  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      They do in the US as well. The difficulty is that wind chill is a subjective index of how cold it feels, and so can be misleading in ters of the "freezing power" of the weather.

    • @FranzKrammer4746
      @FranzKrammer4746 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      of course.... now you've guessed my specialty... engineers have really resisted the measuring of the subjective factor...Example: I used to ride motorcycle throughout the winter...it's a challenge

      Franz K Excessive wind freeze I would imagine!

      Risk Bites the wind just magnifies the effect of the existing temperature...the existing temperature causes the frostbite..even without wind ... I rode a motorcycle through the Canadian winter

    So if it's lower than 32 degrees does that mean you can get frostbite
