PLEASE READ! This process / video was filmed back on the 2nd of April. I had the majority of the video filmed and edited before Badger unexpectedly passed away. I asked you guys on twitter & instagram whether you thought it was still appropriate / worth uploading, and 98% of you said that it was still something you would like to see. So even though he unfortunately passed away before I could finish filming this video, I wanted you to know that he had a good few weeks of cuddling and playing with the other boys happily, with no fighting or tension, I just wish he could of had longer with them (and I wish I had filmed more of it but I was so busy with my other job). The ultimate reason why I decided that it still felt right for me to personally upload this is that it contains many clips of him in the last month or so of his life, which are nice to look back on. I also thought it could be beneficial to those of you who may be needing to or thinking of introducing your own rats, to see the process, especially after a neuter, and to see some of the behaviors that could possibly appear during your own introductions. It also has a somewhat happy ending, even though Badger is no longer with us, Moose is now able to live happily with the other two rats, and I'm so happy about that. Please take a look at some of the resources I link in the description to better understand some of these behaviors and also the introduction process as a whole, as this video wasn't meant to be one explaining the process, just documenting my own.
So sorry to hear about Badger! What adorable ratties you have! They're just such wonderful animals, I wish people would just get educated about rats, just look at their sweetness!

paige nobody ever responded to this but he's a regular pet rat, the only differences between them are their ears //fancy or dumbo// fur is just dependent on what dominant colors you breed
It is so nice to see that Badger had a chance to get along with everyone and they all looked very content for most of it (ignoring the squabbles to decide boss). It is sad to see him get his bat wings but he had a wonderful time with a Hooman he cared for and at least one brother and then 3 he enjoy being with. I will hopefully soon be introducing my two boys (Toya and Yukito) to two/three new baby rats and am hoping they are as understanding with them as they have been so far with all the humans they have met.
I find it amusing that they were in their cage tryna get along while you were doing work on the computer- and one of them kept looking at you like mom I'm being good I'm ready to be let out now
Would you be abel to show/ explain to us what normal play fighting is like? And what territorial fighting is like. My group of three boys have been living together for about 4months now and no one has drawn blood. But they are constantly at each other and make a lot of noise. I did not introduce them right at all.... I didnt know at the time and just put them all together. Im just wondering if they are getting along okay or if I should seperate them and try introducing them the right way... I got all three within a week of each other but they are from different litters. Thank you!
From my experience, actual territorial fighting will draw blood. And the rat/s being dominated will start squeaking in terror everytime the dominant rat comes near him/them, even if there are bars between them. Does one rat get extra fluffy when he is fighting/agitated? He will be the dominant rat.
As always...a great informational video, with ideas and tips on what to look out for! If I could go back, Id probably give my rats less space for the first couple weeks, and then give them more access. It worked out as they came as sisters and a cage mate, but still might have been better...they often get into little squables.
Heya. Enjoyed the video. Prepping for my boys to meet their little brothers soon. One recommendation; slow down the text a bit. Kept having to pause the video and rewind it. Also, where do you get all your rat accessories?! I’m having one helluva time finding toys and furniture for them. Like that plastic soda can holder - looking climbing toy. Glad you’re making videos xD and I know my boys are grateful too, with all the headache you’re saving us.
Omg great video! Im really sorry badger passed :( i am going to be getting rats in a month or so (i have wanted them for years and i am fully prepared) and its just a sad reminder of how short these precious pets' lives are :(
Great video! Such sweet fluffy boys. 😭💜 Quite a few years ago I adopted an adult male Siamese rat from the shelter where I worked, then another adult champagne hooded male a few months later (the shelter did not get rats in very often but I promise I checked every day so I could get my first rat a companion ASAP). The second rat was fairly submissive, but the first one didn't care; he would always attack during my attempted bonding sessions, & at one point gave the other one a nasty bite right down to the muscle tissue. (I still have a tiny scar on my finger from that incident when I tried to break them up.) I got them both neutered but even then it was a loooong process to get them to be okay with each other (I also used the carrier method). But it was worth it, because after that they were BEST friends & it very obviously improved the quality of life for both of them during their final year. They both ended up with age-related illnesses; I had to have one put to sleep & then the other one exactly a week later (just a coincidence in their unrelated sicknesses; one had a URI & the other had a bad malocclusion & was having difficulty walking). I discovered your channel because I accidentally acquired two baby hooded rats about two weeks ago. Long story short, they were intended as feeders but their personalities were just too well-suited to being pets that I couldn't give them back. I am NOT a person who impulsively gets pets, but I had essentially done the preliminary research from already having them before. They have a giant new cage, a ton of toys, & are doing really well. Fortunately these two are only 6 weeks old & came from the same place, but my vet says to watch them closely when they hit puberty at 6 months in case fighting starts up. But right now they're best buds. Sorry for this ridiculously long comment. Condolences on your sweet Badger but thank you for this video & your channel! 🐁
Oh my gosh, I was literally just about to write "Badger is so cute!" and then saw that he had passed away. I'm sorry for your loss, it's always sad to lose a little rat friend :'( one of mine passed away in June as well
Fyly-chan No, you should never have one. So having two is good. My rats are very happy with each other and when I went to get rats they were only selling two at the time.
This was so helpful, especially with you pointing out each of their behaviors. The fight made me jump. Lol is there ever an issue with feeding them when you have them in a smaller cage? Can rats become food aggressive? It was nice to see clips of Badger. I'm sorry for your loss. I'm glad to see the rats being a family, though.
Some Years ago, i bought 2 female rats. After a half year, i took them out of tge cage to play. Later i wanted to put them back and i did. First the with/brown one and then the black. Short after i put the first back, i saw her dead in the cage. It was winter but we decided to bring her dead body into the forrest. After that the black one was for 2-3 months alone. She was very depressed, every time in her small house and didnt want to play. My mother had some issues with allergic, she reaced to them too, but to see the black one so depressed broked her Heart and we decided to buy two new Rats. I bought them at the same Place like the previos one. I knew that it can be very dangerous by just place them together at the Couch(a very familiar place to the black one). But we was very lucky. The black one was so happy to have new friends, she accteped them immidiatly. The other two liked her too so i did put them all in the same cage. Never had issues with them. Therey were so adorable and friendly. Never got bite, pissed or anything like that from them. I miss them so hard 😭
I’m very sad to hear, off your loss, thank you for sharing. Our first introduction with rats was Bonnie A baby and Sammy full grown and mistreated by her last family was in the bathtub, we had thick gloves on and were ready for the worse but no they snuggled up, within the first second.
Whenever I introduce a new rat I get them all in a neutral space and smear yogurt all over them. They seem like they are all too worried about the tasty yogurt. Rats love food.
thank you soooo much for posting this i need to introduce a pair to my oldest rat again since the first time some aggression was shown n since then ive been a bit too worried of trying again fearing that theyll hurt eachother especially when considering the carrier method
We have girls and during the last introduction all suddenly became very interested in and protective of one of the new girls. The reason became very clear when two weeks later she introduced the seven little undercover agents she had smuggled in..... we now have a larger group as planned but for once there wasn't any introduction necessary.
I'm really happy that their all doing really well now and getting along!! Ur a really awesome rat mom! (BTW I subscribed, put on notifications, and went back to like as many of ur vids as I could, lol)
Wow! You've got an eye for details, I never would've seen that 'slap'! (1:30) Btw @2:27 , was that 'attack'/telling off caused by Badger 'dominance grooming'?
Great video! I am so so very sorry about Badger.... It's always hard losing such a beloved family member.. If you don't mind my asking, how long would you say it took for each stage? Like, how long were they in the carrier before you placed them in a slightly larger cage; how long we're they in there before pouring then in a larger cage, etc. Thank you in advance for your time and I do hope you are healing well with your loss.. Much love.
I"m not the OP But I used the same method for my boys and it REALLY depends on the rats. It's not a specific timeline. You are looking for specific body language that says they are comfortable with each other. For something takes hours, and others it can take weeks. Usually it's a day or less though.
i know that this was posted a LONGGGGG time ago but i was wondering where you get your bedding guards cause i am getting bedding for my rats and i have no idea where to find one like yours (the thing that keeps the bedding from spilling)
So even if they start fighting you leave them together because mine were fighting and I took them out immediately should I leave them in the same cage for a couple of hours? I don't know i need help
Would a box work as well as a cage? Im getting 2 new boys to keep Robin company, since his brother Rex died recently. Robin has been known to be a bit territorial. What would you suggest?
Hi Emi, i am doing my introductions starting this week. When you say "stayed like this for a while" at each stage, how long is a while? Im nervous and want to get it right so my boys get along. Thanks!!!!
It really depends on the rats, I didn’t want to put the exact times in the video because there’s always people who will get ‘triggered’ by it by not understanding rat behaviour. But it can be anywhere from a few hours to a few days, the larger blue cage they stayed in for a good few days, they’d moved into the main cage for a bit and started fighting badly so they had to go back into the blue cage for a bit longer. With straight forward intros the whole process can take anywhere from 1-3 days, but because of their history mine took over a week.
@@Emiology Hi Emi! Update! My four boys eddison, tesla. Dawin and newton have been living together without issue now for nearly a month. This is in no small part due to the help from you and i just wanted to say thanks!!!!
I have a really important question. I got a new rat a few days ago and she has been sneezing alot, and I'm concerned about it, she doesn't have anything coming out of her nose or eyes and over all she looks and acts healthy . She's eating properly and drinks water regularly and she plays around. She is relatively young, she's about 4 inches long, I dont know her exact age. Anywhos, someone who owns a rat themselves says that its normal for then to sneeze when the are getting to know a new environment. I just need some insight on this. Should I be worried??
I have four boys who have lived together for about a month. Introductions went perfect and they were living together great. But this past week one of the older once started picking at the younger ones. He ended up causing a large gash on one so I separated them. I'm considering neutering him and then trying again. I have had rats on and off for many years but have never had this issue before. I'm hoping I can get them back together eventually.
Nice video! I hope Badger rests well in heaven. I was wondering if I could get some advice about my pet mouse. I’ve had him for about 7 months now, and I purchased him from a pet shop (because my local shelter didn’t have any mice at the time) and I’ve had quite a hard time taming him. Every time I place my hand slowly into the cage my mouse starts attacking my hand and biting my fingers really hard. When he bites me I just gently pull my hand away and close the cage door, but I really want to tame him. Sometimes he bites so hard that my finger bleeds! He’s my first mouse I’ve ever owned and I want him to be happy. Any advice or tips I could use to make him less aggressive? :)

thank you soooo much for posting this i need to introduce a pair to my oldest rat again since the first time some aggression was shown n since then ive been a bit too worried of trying again fearing that theyll hurt eachother especially when considering the carrier method
Sundae with the BIG MOOD @5:12
I want to keep your rats they are soooo fuzzy looking and squishy. Thanks for the video
We have girls and during the last introduction all suddenly became very interested in and protective of one of the new girls. The reason became very clear when two weeks later she introduced the seven little undercover agents she had smuggled in..... we now have a larger group as planned but for once there wasn't any introduction necessary.
super cute rats miss badger!
I’m sorry about badger passing x
i have no rats this video is just adorable
also i'm so sorry about what happened to badger 💜💙
All right time to introduce my rats, GET IN THE TUBE!
I'm really happy that their all doing really well now and getting along!! Ur a really awesome rat mom! (BTW I subscribed, put on notifications, and went back to like as many of ur vids as I could, lol)
Man, I know it's a late comment, but they are just SO SO SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuute!
I have a male rat that does that.adorable Blackie is learning to clean himself.
The edit for sprout had me dying 😂
What bedding tub/tray is that? ( 6:00)
I think you did a great job
They are adorable :)
Where did you get the see-through bin on your big cage? Do they make them for CN's? Or is it a DIY thing?
Wow! You've got an eye for details, I never would've seen that 'slap'! (1:30)
Btw @2:27 , was that 'attack'/telling off caused by Badger 'dominance grooming'?
7:46 awwww such a cutie
Emi, where did you get the acrylic box that lines the bottom of your cage? It looks much better than what I'm currently using!
Usually it's a day or less though.
i know that this was posted a LONGGGGG time ago but i was wondering where you get your bedding guards cause i am getting bedding for my rats and i have no idea where to find one like yours (the thing that keeps the bedding from spilling)
so cute n fuzzy😍🐀🐁
So even if they start fighting you leave them together because mine were fighting and I took them out immediately should I leave them in the same cage for a couple of hours? I don't know i need help
Would a box work as well as a cage? Im getting 2 new boys to keep Robin company, since his brother Rex died recently. Robin has been known to be a bit territorial. What would you suggest?
Are you asking if you can use a cardboard box as a cage? Nope
How did you handle free roam time during this? Or did you not give them that time until after? My boys always fight outside the cage.
Tay Anderson I am also wondering this :/ it might be best to just not give them time outside until they’re all bonded? Feels mean tho 😫
I should be getting new rats soon for my lone boy. Should I put them in the bath first or straight in the carrier
@@Emiology oh my god you replied!
Thats really helpful.

If you dont mind me asking, wheres that clear tray from? Ive had my dcn for 4 years or so and still havent found one i could use in it
I love this.. my ratties both passed away so this helps some
I have a really important question.
