Thank you for sharing this! I was actually working on recording a trio with myself, but I wasn't sure how to best do it! This is definitely going to be helpful!!!
This is super helpful.. it’s the clearest explanation I’ve found on TH-cam. Now the algorithm is going to feed me lots of flute videos! Nothing wrong with that.
Despite being an old geriatric, I am just beginning to try to learn how to record myself and make simple(ish) multi-screen videos just like this, but every 'instructional video' I've found seemed to over complicate matters and go into far more technical depth than I need for MY silly musical abilities. But THIS video has given me EXACTLY the info I need and can use. Thank you so much Katie - and by the way, you play beautifully! Best regards, Dave - over here in rainy England.
Not only is she a flute expert, she’s an IT expert too! 😆 This is way too hard for me. But makes me appreciate the vids even more given how much time goes into making them.
How unusual that I want to send someone a few split screen guitar lessons and my search ends up with you Katie..thanks !!!! I did not think it would even be something I can do
Thank you! I'm getting into making multi-instrument music videos myself, and this is really helping me wrap my head around the video side of things. I've been using Logic and Pro Tools for years, so the audio is no issue. Working with video, however, is entirely new to me. Beautiful playing, by the way.
Very nice playing and great instructional video. I play saxophones clarinet and flute and I loved your playing. I wish I could sound like you. Beautiful playing.
Thank you for putting up this wonderful tutorial Katie. Your concise explanation, tips and video capture of iMovie helped me 100% in rendering a multi screen music video of 4 teenage musicians collaborating for an online project. It was just timely, fun learning journey for me and my family during this lock-down period!
strangest thing ever....trying to help my son learn how to do this but really knowing he should be working on music for CIMF. After watching the video for a while I realize....It's a CIMF artist faculty!!! Amazing.
Hey Katie, I'm not a flautist, but a voiceover artist! This was a really clear and well-constructed video, which I can definitely use for my celebrity impressions, if I need 2 characters to talk to each other! Great work!
Katie, if you hard drive storage is filling up you may need to delete your rendered files. Go to Movie>Preferences> Delete Rendered files. I use Final Cut Pro and I saw a step to tun off background rendering and it changed my world. Every time you render your video it is creating a complete new set of rendered files and they grow exponentially. I basically filled up a 500GB hard drive with three or four 30 minute video projects. Great tutorial!
Hi Katie. Thank you for creating this video. I really needed some guidance to make some multi screen videos of my own. That is a beautiful mouthpiece on your flute. Beautiful sound that comes out of it as well. I will post my resulting video from your advice. Have a fantastic day.
I'm just starting to learn about creating split screen/group videos and this was super helpful! Really accessible for me and my students. Now if I can just get myself a MacBook! I really appreciate the easy to follow tutorial!
Ciao Katie, great video and it turns out to be very helpful for me since my two 8 and 5 years old sons are starting to make some pretty concerts that I would love to make a good video out of it! They’re playing the violin and cello learning with the Suzuki method. Thank you again for sharing your know-how on video making! Buona giornata!
Thank you - quite helpful. I had less hassle with the audio because I recorded and edited parts in Reaper separately - then there was just one audio wav to paste in, but your technique was exactly what I needed to deal with the video. One thing I discovered - on my slower computer (and a longer tune), I had to be a little patient with the layer saving. I was trying to do layer 2 after layer 1 before layer 1 finished, and was frustrated until I took a break. (Also appreciate your skill on flute as someone who quit flute after 9th grade.)
Thanks!! You did a really excellent job of showing the steps. I appreciate it a lot and feel empowered and excited to use the technology in my work with children's theater.
Thanks so much for sharing your video-making know-how! I have just started making my first multi-screen videos with iMovie, using the method you suggest, along with Audacity for the multi-track overdubbing. So far so good, but I have a lot of learning ahead of me
thank you very much for this very useful training video ! i would like to make multiscreen rock n roll music video and do my favourite late 50's , 60's and 70's and 80's music and perform for people where i play all the instruments by myself as a one man band cheers :)
So, I don't play flute in the least, but this channel is actually so dope, especially your presentation, to the point where I'm actually watching this in awe, waiting to just see how you record these self collab vids, but not even fast-forwarding anything. Great job! 👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thanks for doing this! Some friends and I are thinking about collaborating and this will allow us to use the equipment and software we already have. Great video!
Thank you so much for this! I have wondering how to do these, but didn’t want to invest in Final Cut Pro. Now I know how to with iMovie, which I already have ❤️❤️
Final Cut Pro X has a huge advantage with this kind of project. (1) It will auto-sync clips together based on their audio track, saving trying to eyeball the audio waveforms, and (2) It allows for multiple video clips to be stacked in the same project, allowing for any number of "picture-in-picture" combinations. In short, while it took Katie four (4) different projects steps (files) to assemble this in iMovie, FCPX will let you do it in a single step (file). Throw all of your clips into a project, sync, stack, and you're done. The best part is that FCPX and iMovie share the same underpinnings and interface layout (made by the same programmers), so it's very easy to move up to FCPX.
Excellent job. Superb flute playing. I'm new to editing together videos and iMovie didn't seem to have any kind of template for a four square. This method will work great. Going to go try it out today.
Great tutorial. If you ever upgrade to Final Cut Pro it will save you all the in between export steps as you can put all audio and video tracks above each other. Saves tons of time and effort.
Thank you so much! I actually recently downloaded the free trial of final cut pro, so I'm trying to decide if I want to buy it! It seems like it would save me a lot of time in the future as long as I spend some time figuring out how to use it :)
@@katieflute I used iMovie for years and always thought FCP is for the pros and difficult to use, but as soon as I got it, it surprised me that it's actually easier than iMovie as it saves time and offers more possibilities. Besides that it's very similar to iMovie in how to use it. But yes, it's an investment... what I did is that I bought the education software package together with my new Macbook and that was less painful.
Wow this is fantastic! Yours was the first video in my search that I clicked on. 😁🎶 I hope that my old MacBook Pro can do this in iMovie, I haven’t seen some of these features yet… But I also haven’t known what to look for! I’m inspired, thank you! Beautiful playing and beautiful flute by the way congratulations on your sponsorship. Update - I have storage issues too 😂 so I played those few seconds of your video for my husband about my need for an external hard drive. It’s been a topic already over here for several weeks. He was reading on his iPad anyway so he immediately went to his favorite Apple seller’s website to look them up! Yup storage is such an issue. And I’ll be doing 4 part split screen so I’m cringing already at the thought of the storage I’ll need to export all those video files... Time to upgrade storage space! Learning so much from you, more than expected, thank you! You and your playing and teaching style are all lovely. Subscribed! 😊🙏💗🎶👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you for the wonderful tips and it truly shows how much efforts you put into your video! Much appreciated. I was using that split video which really crops the video up and thanks for the picture in picture tip. :) Truly hated that quality in accapella and as a suggestion maybe you can try to connect the mic using some cable directly to the camera to save you the time and struggle of clapping and lining up the audio... Had some issues with that as the video and audio might sync in beginning but runs off by a few seconds near the 8-10 minutes mark if it is like a recital long video around 20 minutes or more.
I hope this video is helpful! Let me know if you have any questions about the editing or recording process 💖
Thank you for sharing this! I was actually working on recording a trio with myself, but I wasn't sure how to best do it! This is definitely going to be helpful!!!
How do you add the music score at the bottom of the screen, throughout the video?
@@beckypepper1297 I just do it in imovie :) I can make a tutorial for that if people are interested!
That would be awesome - I love being able to follow along, especially when it has your markings in :)
Hi, I have a Android and I recorded my practicing with my phone. Is there a way to import those videos to imovie? Or do I need to use another device?
GOD BLESS YOU FOR THIS. i am not using it for music, but i’m directing and editing a one-act play all over zoom and this SAVED MY LIFE THANK YOU
Literally me but for spirit night
Thanks, Katie. Great strategy... Come for the video editing tips, stay for the flute music.
FYI, using your technique, I created this: th-cam.com/video/DRhx7q-zLv0/w-d-xo.html. Much appreciated!
I also play a Powell Flute. My modell is the Signature. I love it soooooo much. 🥰

I was today years old when I realized the piece in the intro is Allegretto by Godard! You play so beautifully and fluidly! Keep up the amazing work!
