A lot of folks were introduced to The Pixies by the movie Fight Club. My intro was via another movie: Pump Up the Volume starring Christian Slater. It features a great soundtrack, including Wave of Mutilation (UK SURF). Cool movie, mos def worth a look.

@@frangarcia7774 Feldman also produced/plays on some of Frank Black's records - and PJ Harvey. However, I never felt that he brought much Beefheart influence with him to his later work...well, maybe in his contributions to Pere Ubu.
Boy was this tough. Especially considering that I ended up choosing from just 3 albums with Doolittle to the fore. On another day, the order would probably change. There was almost nothing between my top 5 and the next 5 only just keep out a number of other songs: 10 - Levitate Me 9 - No. 13 Baby 8 - Velouria 7 - Tame 6 - Hey 5 - Debaser 4 - Here Comes your Man 3 - Monkey Gone to Heaven 2 - Gigantic 1- Wave of Mutilation Some near misses - Nimrod's Son, Cactus, Where is my Mind?, Gouge Away, I Bleed, Rock Music, Havalina I know Joe isn't too keen on Hey, and I was relatively ambivalent about it, until I saw them do it live in 1990 and I found it utterly spell-binding.
Making this list was tough, but I think I am happy with it... 1 : Gigantic, 2 : Cactus, 3 : Hey, 4 : Where Is My Mind, 5 : Wave Of Mutilation. 6 : Subbacultcha, 7 : Dig For Fire, 8 : Monkey Gone To Heaven, 9 : Debaser, 10 : Bone Machine

Bob Mould said the Pixies have more great ideas in one song than most bands will have in their whole career. Couldn't agree more. Here's my list that would probably be completely different if I did this tomorrow: 1. Debaser 2. Alec Eiffel 3. Distance = Rate Times Time 4. Mr. Grieves 5. Monkey Gone to Heaven 6. U-Mass 7. Hey 8. Gouge away 9. Velouria 10. Gigantic
These Pixies songs get quite a few listens from me on playlists I’ve made, even if I don’t want to listen to one of their albums in its entirety. They are all fantastic songs with memories attached. Basic list for this gal. 1. Monkey Gone To Heaven 2. Wave Of Mutilation (UK Surf) 3. Where Is My Mind? 4. Velouria 5. Here Comes Your Man My favorite version of ANY Pixies song is the live version of Where Is My Mind? when Frank Black joined Placebo on stage and Frank & Brian Molko sang together. Absolutely gorgeous.

I was curious to see each of the 3 lists and correctly assumed there would be some overlap but not a lot. For me the Pixies are so good that it is almost impossible to pick a weak song for a best 10. That being said, as a long-time Pixies fan I did a quick top 10 off the top of my head (ask me tomorrow and it might look different). After completing the list it was obvious to me that I left a lot of great songs off my list. 10. Debaser 9. Into The White 8. Hey 7. Head Carrier 6. Dig For Fire 5. Here Comes My Man 4. @@NaughtyVampireGod This is why I wanted to make my list the top 20, but then I found I was extending it to 30, seemed like it wouldn't end. Just thought "Gigantic" was kind of a given and would at least appear on 1 of their lists.

I mostly have only heard songs from Doolittle and a couple from Surfer and understand why they are great. On Doolittle, half of the songs are really good which is a very high standard. I love "Monkey gone to Heaven" the most with it's snarled vocals. "now there's a hole in the sky And the grounds not cold And if the grounds not cold, everything is gonna burn We'll all take turns I'll get mine too". "If man is five Then the devil is six Then god is seven" So eerie and cool. There is nothing in this song that is not great. Maybe the string section helps too. The eerie great feeling of songs like Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, La La Love You (Ok not eerie) and Gouge Away are remarkable. But I can't throw my arms around this band. So clever, so dark; cute once in awhile but remote. The surrealness I find a little un-inviting. Just today I realized I might have a momentary phonophobia to the bass guitar of the Pixies at moments. The sneaky "ins and out" of Kim's bass is a bit too much at times. The bass can start a song or come in at any time. But sometimes it comes around too much .. lurking and loathsome. "I never wait so long; you'll never wait so long" .. for that bass to end. However the bass fills "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and "Gouge Away" and other songs and it's great. I guess sometimes I think it fills up space and I am a man with a busy schedule. Yeah that's gotta be the reason.
I don’t like the format where you guys show individual videos when you run down the top ten. I like to see you guys reactions to what the other says or when they mention a song. Thanks
1. Velouria 2. Where is my Mind? 3. Caribou 4. Alec Eiffel 5. Cactus 6. Gigantic 7. Wave of Mutilation 8. Dig for Fire 9. Break my Body 10. Monkey Gone to Heaven.......Bagboy???? C'mon!!
Surprised U-Mass was picked so often. Don’t disagree that much I love the song. Not in my top 10, glad you picked it though. I always go back to Wave of Multilation as my favorite. Hey is probably #2. I cant pick anymore its too hard to choose! Pretty much every song is so interesting and full of hooks, over in 3 minutes bam thats it. If I play an album I drop everything and listen intensely for about 38 minutes it goes by so fast but I just get mesmerized it captures me.
Interesting picks, surprised Here comes your man ranked so high in everybody‘s lists. Are you allowed to pick cover songs in your top songs of an artist? In case you are not familiar with all b sides/compilation songs etc: Pixies did a gorgeous version of Winterlong by Neil Young. I also love their cover of I can‘t forget by Leonard Cohen.

Where Is My Mind? (1988) 1. Here Comes Your Man (1989) Here Comes Your Man is probably one of the songs I've listened to the most in my life. I've always loved distinct and melodic bass, and this song might be the finest example of that. So catchy, so awesome.
@@NaughtyVampireGod Alright, I suppose you have listened to Pixies a lot more than I have, so your list had more deep cuts than my more "hit" friendly list.
@@pete3105 i think your list has deep cuts - but honestly w Pixies i don't think the distinction is that great - not even sure how they even decided about the singles - w some bands you can hear the singles without even knowing ahead of time - i don't think you can say this about the Pixies

Wtf Here Comes Your Man is a bottom tier "song for radio" track How is this in your guy's Top 5 so much?? That's like saying you'd prefer it if all they made was this sugary sweet surfer rock shit 🤨
It's true that the song is less characteristic of their sound and it wouldn't be as cool if they did a lot of "sugary sweet surfer rock shit." But that's no reason to hold it against someone for simply liking the song.
If you don't even have Vamos on your list, why take it serious? 1) Vamos 2) Bone Machine 3) River Euphrates 4) I've Been Tired 5) Debaser 6) I'm Amazed 7) Manta Ray 8) Brick is Red 9) La La Love You 10) Crackity Jones

A lot of folks were introduced to The Pixies by the movie Fight Club. My intro was via another movie: Pump Up the Volume starring Christian Slater. It features a great soundtrack, including Wave of Mutilation (UK SURF). Cool movie, mos def worth a look.
That's a great version of Wave. I still like the album version slightly better, but both are so good.
Loved that movie. Can’t find it on streaming because of the song licensing I think?

Boy was this tough. Especially considering that I ended up choosing from just 3 albums with Doolittle to the fore. On another day, the order would probably change. There was almost nothing between my top 5 and the next 5 only just keep out a number of other songs:

I was curious to see each of the 3 lists and correctly assumed there would be some overlap but not a lot. For me the Pixies are so good that it is almost impossible to pick a weak song for a best 10. Hon. Mens. : Subacultcha, Gouge Away, Alec Eiffel, I Bleed, Trompe Le Monde, Distance Equals Rate Times Time, Here Comes Your Man, Sad Punk, Allison, geez, I could go on and on...
Palace of the Brine is a great short song.
Thanks
Everyone of them written by Charles Thompson. Pixies would never have existed without his songwriting genius.

It's an excellent song that's why. Just because a song is popular doesn't mean it's bad.
It's true that the song is less characteristic of their sound and it wouldn't be as cool if they did a lot of "sugary sweet surfer rock shit." But that's no reason to hold it against someone for simply liking the song.
