Boat Painting 101: Spraying the Topcoat

Using the Quantum99 high solids topcoat, Brendan applies sprayed coats of this topside paint onto his perfectly primed and prepared hull. The BlackWatch 26 is going from off white deteriorated gelcoat to a shiny new black paint job. Spraying can be tough but Brendan does a great job applying with the help of Engineered Marine Coatings' paint guru, Jon Boswell.
Even if you're not a pro spraying in a booth, using the Quantum99 system on your topsides with a brush or roller is easy to apply and forgiving when it doesn't all go as planned. It is easily repaired and buffed when drips, runs or damage compromise your paint job.
Quantum99 has double the solids, half the VOCs, and no free isosyanates as compared to other traditional high solid marine paints so it's perfect for the DIY boatworker.

the topcoat i use is way to thick to spray paint, do you just use lots of thinner? or do you use special topcoat for spray painting?

Hi Brendan! Great job, and now that it's been 4 years, how's it holding up? Also how many quarts of paint did you need for the 3 coats (understanding you mix it 1:1 ratio paint and hardner, plus small percentage of reducer). So if you used 2 quarts of color, 2 of activator, a little over a gallon of material for that size boat for 3 coats. Thanks! Chris
