    So, i7-11800H basically needs almost twice the rated TDP of 45W to get the advantages of having extra two cores it has over i5-11400H. So, unless the laptop has beefier cooling solution to handle that 80W+ CPU power, the difference between i7 and i5 will be smaller.

    The fact they have very close MT scores at 45W means the Willow Cove cores perf (and clock frequency) scale almost linearly with power.
    Before with Skylake we had diminishing returns when adding more power.
    This reinforces the findings of Hardware Unboxed where Tim plotted Cinebench score against TDP and found a straight line.

    The problem with this test is that in almost every game you're heavily GPU bound. Base level (xx50) gpus are garbage and they're basically ignored by anyone who knows what they're looking for. If you were using a 3060 the story would be much more interesting as the i7 would be able to keep up with the big boy GPU.

    @TabalugaDragon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    The reason why at 45 watts there is pretty much no difference between them is because the 11-th gen curve works entirely differently from previous Intel generations and current Ryzen. Usually efficiency drops drastically as you increase power, but not in case of 11-th gen, the more power you give to the CPU, the more performance you get, and it doesn't lose much efficiency at higher power limits\clockspeeds. So because of this i7 is only worth it in extremely well cooled laptops, not worth it anymore for thinner and lighter gaming laptops.
    Thanks for the video! Hoping to see them compared with a 3060 at some point!

    The gains in esports games seems to be ST bound. While MT heavy AAA like Cyberpunk are GPU bound even at low :/

      Another reason why the combination with RTX 3050 makes sense for a review: you're not likely to see many offerings in the market with Core i5 (11th Gen) and RTX 3060. I just did a quick market filter in Germany (website "Geizhals") and found only a single offering with i5-11400H and RTX 3060 (105W max GPU Power). Whereas for i5-11400H and RTX 3050 and 3050 Ti, I already find 14 different offerings, despite the 3050 being relatively new in the market. So yeah, if you go with RTX 3050 (Ti), you actually *can* choose between i5 and i7. With RTX 3060 (and upwards), such a choice is very rare. // Tom

    • @fleurdewin7958
      @fleurdewin7958 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have no idea on the pricing in Europe. But the i5-11400H actually make sense though. In my region, it is about USD110 cheaper than the i7-11800H after currency conversion. To step up from RTX3050Ti to RTX3060 , the price is roughly the same amount to step up from 6 core i5 to 8 core i7. i5-11400H + RTX 3060 will outrun an i7-11800H + RTX 3050Ti in any games . Of course, Intel would want you to buy the i7 since the profit margin is higher for a higher-end product, so AIB are supposed to heavily promote the i7 instead of the i5.

    • @Pamani_
      @Pamani_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fleurdewin7958 True. I see the TUF A15 3060 16GB 500GB SSD for 1300€ with 11400h, but 1500€ with 11800h.
      I don't see many laptops with 6 cores TigerLake / Cezanne, let alone paired with a 3060. It's a shame as those combos make for great entry level gaming laptops.

    This was most interesting comparison almost makes me not want to buy the i7 for gaming. I say almost really depends what video card they force you to have with what processor. For example the new omen 17(hint hint review please) if you want the 3070 you have to get the i7, also if it's not that much more then I would get the i7 anyways.

    IMO for gaming,
    4C/8T the bare minimum.
    6C/12T sweet spot.
    8C/16T future-proof.
    Anything above I think its kinda overkill.

    For things like gaming, can you disable cores, like you can on desktop ? Thinking of getting the benefits of better binning, higher clocks of the i7, without the power needs for the 2 extra cores. Might not matter enough, but I'm still curious.
