That would be really helpful, last night I spent way too long reading the docs for windows installation and how to even get the license. It was great or simple to understand.
Before someone says anything, it's the first windows install I needed to do in nearly 10 years and this time it's not even my PC.
They probably want people to think "Microsoft supports us!", still surprised me tho

I'm old. I got into the web because it fascinated me; I was never able to write code because C. etc. conventions seemed alien (and very dogmatic and rigid) to me. In the 90s I dreamed of being able to run my websites on the desktop as an application. You'd think PWAs would be that dream realized, but PWAs would be the nail in the coffin of the open Web and as an old person we've been here before and it wasn't good (hi there IE!) Firefox til I die.
@@TheVincentKyle And you never got into any of the 100 other languages that existed back then? If we're talking about the 80's, I would've recommended Pascal, as C didn't see its first standardization until 1989. It's also a slightly easier language to learn. Although if you want something less rigid, even BASIC had some good variants such as QuickBASIC 4.5 which you could get completely for free and could compile binaries and incorporate assembly modules for speed. I would even still recommend QB if you want to have fun while learning how to program and it runs great in DOSBox.

Because i remember how the launch of nt kernel went in the home user space went with windows XP at launch that only after SP2 the os war anywhere close to being somewhat stable operating system and all stability problems were fixed with release of windows 7.
That would ironically kill windows for good as it would become easier to port software!

Microsoft knows that, in the upcoming multiplatform era, they have to be "OS-friendly" by making windows feel part of an ecosystem where multiple OSes can understand eachother, this is at the highest level, but I feel like this is what they want to do

Linux started the FOSS snowball effect on desktop features this year.
For those who don't know, the FOSS snowball is like this: When a FOSS application get popular enough, a lot (and I mean, A LOT) of devs will contribute. This will make the development so fast, reliable and easy that a single company just can't compete, and then it becomes the standard method. As the standard program for that task, the effect gets even stronger making the idea of competing just madness.
Some FOSS standards like this are: Docker, bare metal hypervisors, server management tools, CUPS, the Kernel Linux as just the kernel (for using in embedded devices), communication protocols like ethernet and more. Imagine someone trying to make proprietary cable network protocols today.

the year of the linux desktop has been every year the last 30 years, but in my experience that year is just whenever you switch. i've used it exclusively for over a decade, and most of the revolutionary changes certainly did not happen this year, and overall it's been a very gradual improvement

Microsoft is noticing that their OS is very bad, unstable and inconsistent, and are trying to convice people to use Linux instead.
I'm glad Linux is becoming more accessible and useful by the day, what I think we need is some sort of open source, robust PWA engine. And with advances like containerized apps, Proton/Wine, PWA can become more viable.

They "embrace" Linux to try and get ahead of government regulators around the word and show that you don't need Windows to use their software and services.
They "extend" by making more options available.
They "extinguish" by crushing any sort of competition to their services meaning that even if Linux were to replace Windows, you're still tied to MS services and software somehow as that's the majority of everyone else has.
Yes, they're going for that metadata and ad revenue, but life long subscriptions to their software and services are also very lucrative. Always take any move a big tech company makes with a certain level of scrutiny. Remember, they had to either crush or buy up a lot of others to get to that size. You don't get to be that big without crushing more than a few dreams.
The opensource community not only needs to keep making good software, but should also up the ante a bit too. Microsoft sees them a threat to their growth and they are coming for them.
Indeed, they're trying to get ahead of the wave of collapse and maintain their monopoly. One correction though, the word you meant to use in the phrase "up the ante" is spelled with an e, as in the ante for a game of poker.

My conspiracy theory - It's preparations for Windows 10 end of life.
Due to 11's restrictive minimal requirements, many computers would become unsupported right then.
So - I think that to prevent accusations of planned obsolescence Microsoft might make Linux the officially endorsed replacement for those now unsupported systems instead of having to support them with 11. Not that many people would actually proceed with that... but now Microsoft has a shield!
or they could install them with a lightweight windows 11, I use a light weight version of Windows and can be install on decades old devices.

I can kinda understand the TPM (though it still seems optional for just some features), but just not the arbitrary CPU wall.

@@maevwat The one time I got a kernel panic was when I used a faulty USB drive for Live USB. Bought a new USB flash drive and haven't had any kernel panics on either live USB or when installed on the internal drive.

I think the next step for Microsoft is to sell it's own Windows Linux Distribution for desktop computers and make people upgrade from Windows 11 or 12 to their own Linux Windows distro.
That way, no more stability problems due to drivers or whatever... they sell OneDrive space and Office 365, DX12 would still be proprietary but 100% working on Linux. They would then sell their XBox Gaming Pass for PC, etc.
Then their old Windows/DOS kernel can be ditched forever.
They wouldn't even need to sell it. All they need is an open operating system, and lock their repository in some form of key that is obtained by connecting your Microsoft account.
@@MichaelNROH right ! This is gonna happen somehow. A leak shows that Windows 12 will have an online subscription edition. So, maybe they'll ditch Windows in the future or make a Linux distro !? It would save time and cost to them and a more reliable operating system.
@@ybcanal21 It seems highly unlikely they would ditch Windows but it would make sense in the long term if they did it. Microsoft is already huge, Windows is very important but it's not the only thing they have, and with Valve wanting to move out to Linux they become a real threat to Microsoft. If Valve is successful and makes Linux popular Microsoft would lose out on gaming which affects Xbox and would lose out on Windows too since people would start moving. It would be very smart for Microsoft to move to Linux so they don't get left behind incase Linux becomes popular
False leak. Microsoft has responsed that there won't be an aonline subscription for Windows 12. Only Office 365 has that kind of edition.

What if Canonical want to take Ubuntu to a privacy level similar to Windows and this is all just a ploy to advertise their distro as the "easy" one for beginners. I would see Microsoft being pleased if there's a Linux Distro that offers the same privacy level as Windows would. With noobs not being able to differentiate the privacy respecting ones from the non-privacy respective ones, it would an easy win for both Canonical and Windows if they work together to support Microsoft's "features" like Office(only in snap so that brings the integration closer) and others while being able to fill the distro up with as much spyware as possible. Any thoughts or should I just take my meds?
If this were to happen, the open source community will make noise and distrohopping is a thing.

they could do this but all they would be likely to achieve is convert windows users to ubuntu users. uninformed users are going to be abused as long as they stay uninformed. linux, bsd, gnu hurd, templeos, plan9, 9front, reactos, haiku or any other free operating system is not going to change that. if you make ubuntu as bad as windows then the people previously avoiding windows will just avoid ubuntu, too. people who are currently happy with sharing everything with microsoft and letting them tell you how to use your own property are not going to be any less okay with this just because the name and some underlying details of the software change.
The older I get, the less i seem to care about which OS I use. I own an M1 Mac Air, a super old dual boot Intel-based Mac mini/Mint Linux, a Windows 11 mini PC, a Chromebook, and even my phone (Moto G100) has a great desktop UI. They're all really good. The price-performance ratio and stability of computers is, for old timers like me, just unbelievable. And the fact that you can run so many apps in just a browser or as PWA/Electron apps or run Linux apps on Windows via WSL, or ChromeOS container, or VirtualBox when needed just makes the host OS so much less important. Things just keep getting better, faster, cheaper, and more portable. Pretty amazing times.

The classic three-Es: Embrace, Extend, Extinguish. Some context: Microsoft has not received much revenue from their Operating System licenses, to the point they basically give out Windows out for free. Their strategy? Their Office Suite and other cloud subscriptions, Microsoft has been rebranding themselves for businesses and the education sector to keep Windows profitable, but the Windows back-end is a decaying mess of the MS-DOS and New Technology systems and Microsoft themselves are aware Linux is objectively superior. Microsoft is probably not going to waste resources when they finally decide to replace the main underlying systems of Windows and will probably just use Linux. However, once they fully enter this market, they will attempt to destroy much of the FOSS programs by replacing them with their own proprietary software and build their walled-garden, once a monopoly of loyal users is established, they will jack-up the subscription prices again or even possibly try to take down the FOSS philosophy and effectively own Linux. Remember to reject as much non-FOSS compliant programs as you can.

They can't prevent an open software store, they can't provide more distros.
Sure they could disallow certain merge requests, like Google does for Chromium, but if that happens, a lot of developers would just fork the Kernel and build a second Linux.
The fact is, that controlling an operating system is worth nothing. You want to control the services that people want to use and you want them thinking that they want it. It's all marketing really.

With Microsoft pushing more and more spyware and restrictions on their paying customers and an actually free alternative that can do anything that isn't a super specific use-case, that (this is subjective) even looks and feels better, Windows becomes less appealing by the minute, IMO.
I've been on Fedora for well over 1.5 years now and cannot imagine myself going back to Windows.
Free alternative being linux or some free iso version of windows.

@@anon1963 Well there is always VS Code wich can do alot already but if you want a real IDE and don't mind paying for it then Jetbrains Rider is the better alternative to Visual Studio. Sadly no Community Edition like VS has....
@@anon1963 Just curious, do you use VS in an enterprise scenario? Or is it for yourself? I ask because for my personal machine I use VS Code on Debian and if you can make extensions (granted not everyone has the time for making extensions) I cannot imagine any use case other than enterprise collaboration that would require VS. Only my work laptop has VS.
This might be cynical, but it's also correct, another reason for web apps especially on Linux,
is that these days the biggest and most common attack vector for malware is the web browser.
Not to mention tracking and data collection on the web is basically unavoidable.

I hate PWA!! It is okay for something like music streaming, but I would never ever use any tool, I need day to day, as a PWA! Developers should just use a cross platform framework instead! I hate the move to the browser generally!!!

WSA makes Linux very accessible. You can have all the fancy Linux app with all the Windows stuff you're already used to.

Sure, X has been there for decades, but next to no one uses it directly in favor of toolkits like GTK or Qt, and it's being replaced with disparate programs that'll each have their own quirks, even if they adhere to the Wayland protocols mostly.
@@MichaelNROHI mean technically RHEL has alreadyset those standards and to a degree on the fully free and open source side SUSE does that too. What really needs to happen is fragmentation needs to be addressed, and a user interface needs to be standardised in a way that requires absolutely no text file editing or terminal commands to manage the entire machine. That is what holds Linux back from being more widely accepted right now.
@@Underestimated37 KDE and GNOME pretty much already fixed those issues years ago with appstore -like package management and GUI system settings tools. Many distros have made good use of those.

The sure are changing. Operating Systems are just not profitable, even if you sell and track users to a certain degree.
The money lies in subscriptions and online models that can be run without any limitations anywhere.
Even Gamepass could theoretically expand to Linux and it would be easier for Microsoft without selling games as a whole

Considering Google single-handedly maintains Android and ChromeOS, it seems plausible for MS to maintain Windows and "Winux".
However, we must remind ourselves that COS is based on Android, which further reduces the maintenance work for G.

As an alternative, they may chose to support an already established distro. Perhaps some special Ubuntu version which is easily navigable for a Windows user.

they might when their main selling point ceases to be continued support of legacy windows software. if not for vendor lock-in, legacy support and its ecosystem windows on a low level has exactly zero redeeming features and it would only save them money to keep selling "windows" as a front end on top of linux. at this point im not sure they even make significant money off of windows outside of business users (who would be willing to pay for support regardless of what kernel it ran on), and rather give it away for practically free because their business model is more reliant on keeping those users than it is on selling software to those users.
Man, if there were a no-effort distro where DE controls worked the same way as on Windows out of the box and I could use android apps just as easily as with WSA, I'd switch in a heartbeat.

The only thing I wish Linux got more was support for proprietary applications. Things like Photoshop, and especially videogames. When I install Steam on Linux, a large number of games are still unsupported.

But Steam can handle most Windows only games with Proton. It's built into Steam on Linux, so you just have to launch the game nornally. If it doesn't have a Linux version, it'll use Proton to run it.
I've been using Linux on my gaming PC for over 2 years now, and it's only had issues with 3 games.
With games, it's mostly multiplayer games, since they use anti-cheats that are a critical security threat (they operate on the kernel level. It's as if in your fortress some dumbass decided to throw a rope bridge outside for personal use). These rootkits are Windows-specific, so that's that. Until users start calling the companies out for that, I don't know how much can be done here
Nowadays I find that so few games are completely unsupported it doesn't really matter.
Halo MCC, Apex Legends, Skyrim, Baldurs Gate III and tons of more AAA games work perfectly out of the box. Many indie games (and any games by Valve) have native Linux builds. Even if one specific game doesn't work, there's probably a really good alternative that does (EG: Rust has Ark)
Of course I might be a little biased because I've used Linux for a long time and specifically choose games that work on it, but there's plenty of selection if you're willing to give up that one game that doesn't yet work (until it does)
for gaming, Proton (particualrly the GE fork) has pretty good compatibility nowadays

A lot of multiplayer games are being played in some sort of of group. This can already be just one friend, and be a bummer if they don't want to switch away

No, not at all actually.
The devices from Pro 6 and onward don't provide all functionalities like camera or touchscreen support out of the box.
Using Linux on them is only better in my opinion if you don't mind that, but I wouldn't recommend it if you don't have one already.
Edit: Oh yeah, and battery life is also not that great out of the box on all models

I think it should be good idea to make a video about "WHY" the heck there is no Linux tablet. I followed some brands, like Fydetab and jingOS. but both of them discontiniued any how. I follow the topic for years actually, and have a dual laptop.
@@70shahin I think it's just because of the success of the iPad. Android tablets haven't really taken off either, and a mobile os makes more sense for a tablet anyways

I'm not surprised. Windows sucks after their last terms of service change where you basically allow them to go through your files on one drive but also on your connected hard drives.
I knew that one day this might happen and it was just such an perfect point of time since my nvme SSD was dying and that gave me the opportunity to just replace it and install EndeavorOS on it. The only devices running Windows in my house is my old Windows XP PC which I use for retro gaming and my laptop which I use for gaming but it runs a modified Windows 11 UltraLite Installation and I don't worry there about my stuff since the laptop doesn't have a webcam and I only use it for gaming since it has a rtx 3080 and was cheaper than the GPU itself in my country
It is possible to access various Microsoft applications on Linux (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) in a browser, but these versions are very limited and not very helpful if you're used to your local keyboard layout (thousands separators, decimal separator). Discord, Slack, Edge, even Teams, like many other modern applications use Chromium, so it's almost a crime at this point to not make a Linux version. Microsoft is just confident that gamers will never switch to Linux and many professional environments won't ever switch to Linux. My guess is they want to get rid of their server OS, so they're pushing professionals to get accustomed to Linux Desktop, 'cause even if you're using it as a hobby, sooner or later you'll have to get used to going through Terminal to do anything useful or productive.
lol, and then there's me who on my work computer (win 10) frequently has to use git bash to do normal filesystem operations and use vim because Microsoft's shells still don't have a grep equivalent, file explorer is useless for anything more than casual browsing, and vim is one of the few editors that will happily open and edit multi-GB log files.
doubt they're trying to get rid of windows server seeing as it still maintains strong vendor lock-in with no equivalent alternatives and unlike windows in the consumer market actually has paying customers. more likely they're trying to not be left behind entirely by developers and more advanced users who obviously would much rather use linux or mac os and constantly talk about how they would switch if it weren't for X application (people hanging on by a thread). for the vast majority of users linux was never even considered, and has proven itself unable to attract the bottom tier of users, and uninterested in entering the part of the server market microsoft occupies. it poses no real threat to their most lucrative market, however embracing it can put them in a more positive light among more experienced users, who also often tend to be the ones making more impactful decisions when it comes to things like hosting, collaboration, MDM, end user devices, etc. if microsoft != evil in their heads they make more profit.
they tried to fight it with fire the past couple decades and all they got was a generation or two of people like me who are disgusted by the mere mention of the name microsoft and instinctively avoid anything associated with them where ever possible, and also spread this sentiment to less technical people who look to us as authority figures within computing and/or pay us to advise them.
if it pushes more people to consider and switch then like you said, it may open them to ditching phone home Microsoft and proprietary services completely which is great. anything that lowers that barrier to entry is good.

Writing this in the beginning of the vid. Personally I have the feeling that they're gonna go onto a new kernel with windows 12 since the nt kernel is pretty old. The few pictures of windows 12 also look like new kernel of some sort. Windows 12 being on linux kernel would be too much out of place, but I could imagine it being a unix based kernel, since that's generally much more present in the enterprise and server world aswell as most operating systems.

I doubt they'd do it, but it would be one hell of a ride if they did. Can you imagine if they just forked Linux and wrote a Win32 kernel module to provide the interface. It's not as though they couldn't provide their own linker to fill in the gap and allow PE executables to run directly on a Linux system, assuming you're on the same architecture that the binary was built for.

I'm not seeing it. Progressive Web Apps are NOT something I as a windows user wants or needs. I want my programs and the data I feed into them secure and Off line.
Microsoft probably notice that been the biggest service on the world for computers is more important than been the biggest OS in the world. It doesn't matter if you run Linux, Windows or Mac, you still use their services, they still get money and market share.

I think they are remaking teams for linux app. Their website right now allows me to see a download page for teams for home use but when I select rpm or deb package it gives me a 404. So it might be in a process making their linux app.

I think the other reason why Microsoft used Ubuntu as an example is Canonical is another company so not community support only so a more easy to understand for how they are used to in the B2B space thing to explain. For anyone used to using Linux any ubuntu derivative the same instructions should work without much if any change to them.
Web allowed me to switch in 2008 - thanks to Firefox IE was dethroned.
Honestly the only thing keeping me on windows is gaming experience. The moment there is like a 99% compatibility with no nonsense to set it up, then I will switch over. Otherwise, it's just not worth it to me to switch from windows 10 with the telemetry gutted.

MS is one of the largest opensource contributors in the world - makes sense they support Linux, one of the biggest footprints in Azure. MS is smart in this way. Likely we see a Windows Linux distro in the future. As Open Source OS communities grow cold and paywalled (see Redhat), people will turn to MS for solutions.

Microsoft no longer makes money selling consumer operating systems. It now makes money with data, and Office and enterprise. They have no reason to care if you use Windows ..as long as you use Edge and Office. The one thing Windows is good for is DirectX..but it is clear that Vulkan is the future. I would not be surprised if 5 years down the line WSL will become the Linux subsytem for Windows just for legacy support.

I still can't help but feel like this is a calculated move against Linux, not for it. MS loves Linux but as long as it "stays in its lane" as the "OS you use solely for development because you have to". I think this is an attempt to seem neutral to outside observers, while also providing poor support for Linux in their apps. Sabotaging competitors by only supporting them shittily has been MS' strategy from day one. (see: AARD Code)

As an Active Directory, esxi, proxmox, etc sysadmin, AD + Linux compatibility took me by surprise lol. Do file and printer sharing work as well? That'd be genuinely life changing. Having my local Debian test server connected to my local AD on premise server would be so useful.

I would say it depends on how your systems are set up. What doesn't work the same way are Group Policies. On Linux they just don't get applied.
There are some packages from Ubuntu (I think) and SSSD dependencies that can "translate" some settings, but I'm not sure how that affects Printers.
File Sharing on the other hand should work fine, since it's essentially just SMB authentication with a Domain User. You might need the CIFS dependency for DFS though.

My only gripe with switching my work machine to Linux is the lack of Visual Studio (not VSC).
I've never quite understood the appeal of the default one. As someone who has used both, I find VSC more easier to use, no?

But now I realized your data is not your data any longer and it can be taken hostage by the whims and desires of those cloud based corporations. We have come a full circle from Main frame computing to Personal computing to Cloud based services and back to individual personal computing (it is happening). Build your own NAS and Get linux and own your hardware and data. Sooner the res of the tech industry realize it better.
