About party makeup: classic D&D is designed so you can roll with fighters or mages, especially low level games mean spellcasters get very few casts anyway, so the game might be easier (if a tad boring) with 4 fighters. However, in the classic party makeup: Warrior, Thief, Mage, Cleric, it's the healer that's usually irreplaceable... Thieves REALLY depend on game (i.e. KOTOR, which uses a modified D&D 3rd Edition ruleset lets you bash all locks with a lightsaber, so you don't ever NEED a thief character), fighters (includes paladin, ranger etc.) and mages just destry stuff, you usually need a healer class (cleric or druid) to fix your status effects. Oh and most magic isn't attacking, D&D is kinda weird in that while mages do throw magic missiles and fireballs, summon stuff and buff, they're usually more about utility spells, including replacing thief or fighter or anyone abilities... except healing, which is for so-called Divine casters. Just get yourself someone who can heal in next game and you can easily roll with 3 fighters for the rest of the party without a trouble again.
This is the first video in this series that I stumbled across because I was listening to a podcast that mentioned there was a D&D dungeon crawler on the SNES and I thought, "huh, wonder what that looks like." Thanks to the fact that "Every SNES RPG" is in the title I though, "oh crap! I have to watch all these videos!" So far I have not been disappointed. I really dig the review style.
One of the greatest games of the '90s. Same with part 2. SNES version is pretty good, controller is easier than the mouse. You can hit one of the buttons to change the controls so that you can move around the corridors much quicker. Getting the secrets on each level. Save the bones and have the dwarf revive them. There are more people that will join your party.
The final boss is a creature in D&D called a Beholder. Not just an eye. If you pay attention, he has dozens of eyes. So, how did you complete the game? You need a wizard to use the wand of Sylvas, which is the only thing that can hurt Xanatos.
If I remember correctly, he doesn't follow you outside that room he's in. So I ran in, hit him a few times, then ran out of the room. You can absolutely brute force him because I didn't use any magic
@@JasonGravesPoser, Oh man, I used everything I had multiple times, but he is a big cheater. I'm surprised that physical attacks worked, but maybe Beholders are just strong against magic. (I don't remember that.) But I hit Xanatar with hundreds of damage points and he never fell. A Beholder shouldn't have more than about 75 HP though. Does he throw spells at you that come through the door? It's also a CR 13 monster, which means a party should be at level 10 to fight it, but it's really hard to get passed level 8 in this game. What is really bad is he can obliterate your whole group in 1 spell. Ultimately, I beat him with the wand of Sylvas, which can push him back, and into a trap.
@@CurlyFromTheSwirly in lore, their central eye nullifies magic that is cast directly at them, and the older they get, the more eyes they have, and each eye can cast a different spell. worst is usually disintegrate, followed by petrify and then paralyze. Yep, they are that cheap. one eye will always cast a ray spell that will hurt a lot. I don't think they were 'meant' to be killed. They can be talked to, speak common and their own language, so unlikely anyone in any party will know 'beholder speak'.. sometimes a DM will allow them to speak 'deep speak' which is fine but.. they are always chaotic evil and even if you can talk to one, it's highly unlikely you can trust them in any capacity and they are probably hungry. You cannot flank them, and it's nearly impossible to ever get combat advantage on them, so rogues are generally useless against them. Most methods if you must fight them, is 'blind' as it does have a chance to work if you cast it from the side (as remember, their central eye nullifies magic). If blind hits then you 'can' get combat advantage, provided you even survive the first round of its overly cheap spells.
@xenxander Interesting. Note that the wand I mentioned doesn't actually do any damage to the beholder, not in the game sense of taking away hit points. It merely pushes him back. The idea is to get him into a trap, rather than kill him. Also: Rogues (AKA thieves in AD&D) are quite useless in this game. All the traps & puzzles are arranged so any character can do them.
Fun Fact: You don't have the lure the Beholder into the spike trap, as this is actually fairly challenging to do. Instead, you can back up a room or two, get the beholder trapped in that 3x3 square room, and close the door. Here, you can rest anytime you like. The beholder will continue to go back and forth in that room in an L-shaped pattern. Imagine a room from left to right, the tiles go 123456789 where 8 is the tile you enter the room. The beholder will go from 1 to 2 to 4 and back to 2 and 1. So, open the door, step into the room on 8 (wait for the beholder to be on square 1, otherwise it will hit your flank), smack it with your two melee fighters, and quickly step back and slam the door shut. You will probably get hurt bad, but that's ok. Just rest up and do it again. And again. and again. and again and eventually, you WILL kill it with melee attacks. The cutscene plays immediately, as soon as the beholder dies. May also want to save while you're doing this, as he can also insta-kill one of your group members with a Disintegrate spell (which does exactly 100 damage in this game, which will kill most non-fighters outright).
I went back and forth between the DOS version of this and the SNES port back when it was relatively new and I was fairly impressed with it. They weren’t identical but the SNES version was just as much fun and looked good in its consolized form.
If you liked EotB, then you will LOVE Might and Magic 3: Isles of Terra. It's an even better First-Person dungeon crawler. Though I would have to say you probably want to play the PC version instead, though since you're sticking with the SNES, then I suppose you gotta settle for that version. But if you ever did get tempted to try out a little PC gaming... Might and Magic 6, 7 and 8 are vast upgrades to what you see in M&M3.
Great review man! Got this game some months ago, but haven't had the time to invest in it lately. Nonetheless, thanks for remembering me of it's existence!
Man I loved this game on PC, the first 2 EOTB games are so good. I thought it was better than Dungeon Master even on there, though Lands of Lore is still a good comparison. The art does look a little worse on the SNES than I remember on PC though and I think it was harder. I did know the dnd rules... but maybe I also just sucked. The beholders could ash your whole party pretty quickly from what I remember.
I had this game when I was little. I had no idea what the hell to do. I often would think about it but never remembered the name. But when I seen the cover art I knew immediately this is the game. It pretty wild that it's a dungeons and dragons game and now I'm obsessed with Dark and Darker but never was into dungeons and dragons lol.
Two questions: 1) Was that AVGN himself narrating at the beginning? I'm not familiar with your channel, this is the first video I've seen of yours. 2) Was that Eye of the Beholder by Metallica playing in the background? Sorta sounded like And Justice for All (the song) to me, but Beholder would've been way more appropriate, obviously lol Anyway awesome video, thanks for posting!

You brought this on yourself. Enjoy.
You can sit there all day and tell us that the game looks great and all, but in the end beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
It does though!
Wow....I got a chuckle outta that.
Perfect comment....
You are an absolute genius for playing this song in the background
Easily my favorite song of Metallica
Just noticed it now lol

The Mario paint mouse just makes clicking arrows and weapon pictures easier, right? It doesn't improve the games speed does it?
Not sure playing with the mouse is faster than controller on this game alone, it's more of this port running way better than dungeon master's
love the review mate ! any chance of some early 90s pc rpg reviews?
I don't know a whole lot about the scene, so doubtful. But never say never!
Actually you know what. I've had the Kings Quest series on my "to do someday" list forever. That counts right? Prolly do those at some point

Wow I had this on PC. I had no idea it went to console. Very cool.
Your videos are great thats why I subscribe but you need to mention when the video its sponsor. LOL
If you're a hyperkin representative , I'll take my money for the ad now
I'm not sure if it's the type of rpg for me, but this honestly seems like a decent game.
Fuck I love how you first take a sip of orange juice before you start!
First things first!!
Miyamoto at it again
This immediately made me think of Dungeon Master and I must've seen eye monsters like that a million times in the 90s

It's only legendary because it's the only D&D game on SNES.
Why did they make Poser look like an evil Richard Pryor?
