From the point of view of a very casual player, everything is so confusing. I know that the product must be selling well right now, but I don't know how much this practice scales.
When I look at old products they feel exclusive and special. If I bought a box of Mirrorin, that's THE Mirrodin. A card that's a special edition will feel really special. But the current product is just boring. Who cares about full art cards when half of the cards are full art pokemon or batman edition?
A lot of the new stuff just looks like noise to me. Imagine how it will feel for someone looking at current standart sets in the future. I will look at the boxes and just buy singles because I don't want half of my cards to be random alternate art that doesn't match the rest.

    • @IvanKolyada

it's all perception. I buy the cards I like if I think their beautiful. The market is largely based on supply. There is a shit ton of supply in the market. Set boxes, collector boxes, secret lairs, the market is glutted with cards. Double masters printed 2 rares in each pack. Set boxes often have multiple rares. The singles prices trend down, and then eventually slowly back up with certain cards (usually mythics or heavy demand rares) can spike and then tank again when they are reprinted. Just wait for single prices to go down, but the singles you like and will use or want to speculate a bit on. If you want to invest, buy sealed product and keep it sealed. Preferably buy it on a credit card you will get points on and milk those points and ebay bucks XD.

if they play magic then they won't be able to look at cards from the past because a new set will be coming out multiple times a day they won't be able to keep up, no one will be able to keep up I couldn't keep up years ago when they started releasing more than two new products a year.

I reached 'acceptance' back when mythic rarity was introduced to the game.
That was when my eyes opened to MTG going from a game that's meant to be played and enjoyed...to a total cash grab. They actually fabricated a completely new rarity...put the most desirable cards in there in order to drastically inflate the cost of standard and later the cost of every other format.
That's when I realized MTG wasn't the game I grew up with...it would never be the same...and consequently its when I stopped buying boxes and slowly (over many years) stopped buying any cards at all.
Kudos to Rudy for having way more patience and tolerance than me. These days I get together with a group of friends to play our old decks about 6 times a year. Other games have caught my card game itch and to my surprise I just wound up liking them more. My favorite ones right now being Legends of Runeterra and a solo PvE card game called Monster Train.

With theros collectors boxes kicking off so many mythics and so many variants to what is offered now. Box toppers aren't even special anymore. Yeah FaB is just getting me more and more in love with it as I continue to play it, watch content on it, and see each new set being revealed and released on the market. Everything in it is just pulling me deeper into the game.
With Magic, I don’t even know what’s even going on in that game anymore. It’s becoming shittier every time I look at it. The art is lifeless, the gameplay is shit, and WOTC is just making so many products that you can’t keep up with any of it. The only thing keeping me remotely involved with it is Commander, which is also losing it’s luster considerably in these last few months. The game just isn’t fun anymore.

Market's been nose diving since late October. All of us dumbass single flippers made a killing on tribes from Midnight Hunt (werewolves, zombies) prior to the initial crash. We all decided to double down on vamps early for Crimson Vow. There were slight upticks in the beginning, which we interpreted as being a great sign. I personally dropped about 8k total, expecting it to turn into 11k minimum within 1 month of release (had higher margins faster than this with werewolves). I'll be lucky to get half that now. Magic appears to finally be slowing down.

I mean, there are still variables... Depends on the set... Depends on how good the cards are... Depends on things like flavor and theme and if a set is linked or related to something older... Etc... Currently, I agree... It is slowing. Too much saturation. I think going forward that will be hard to come out of, so you are very much right, yet my former points still carry weight. I believe the first Collector's Displays they did such as Eldraine, Beyond Death, Ikoria, Core 21' and Zendikar will continue to go up and hold solid, especially Zendikar Rising with what it offers (Premium Fetch lands with a mythic symbol to boot) After those sets, Collectors Boxes, etc... got tiring. I think older cards will continue to rise in price too. I am not confident in the state of new Magic. I did recently collect Double Masters over the summer because I LOVED it, that set also is pretty amazing, but that is an example of a set that stands apart. But what will the math be now, 1 in ever 10 sets stand apart? It is what it is I guess.

Ice Age was my jam back in the day, not the greatest cards but some of my favorite artwork ever. Now I am looking around and I just have no idea whats going on. At this point it may be a bit fud of me but I don't think I would buy into the new direction unless they were printed on precious metals. At least then I would know they have some physical value beyond the vagaries of collecting.

A possible answer to your question of why they will not do everything direct is the international market. Amazon and direct works fine for US consumers, but for many places in the world it does not. I agree the disconnect has increased a lot, and it feels like a large chunck of sales are ending up at collectors/investors and not players. It will be interesting to see how MtG and FaB move seeing as LSS is picking up most of WotC old market plan, while WotC moves on in a new direction.

I think Rudy and MtG are missing the whole point of the trading card GAME. The prices of new product and long term value of cards 100% depends on the players, not the collectors. No one will care about serialized cards or 1000s of secrets lair. This is literally marketing 101 here and the psychology of sales, if everything is special NOTHING IS. Slapping a number on it or making it 1 or 1 super premium etched ultra foil does not matter if they players don't need it or want it. ALL these products that are worth anything are due to PLAYERS not collectors, otherwise it's just a game of hot potato between collectors to see who gets burnt the least. Old Product is worth a damn because it got USED, it got PLAYED, it has memories and nostalgia and 100s of thousands went through a laundry machine or 2, stuck in a kids pocket. It NEEDS to be USED for it to be worth shit all in the future.

And what Rudy had to say is how I've felt about it, I can't be mad because magic is doing well, and even if we hate that we're getting Lord of the Rings Modern set, I can't be mad at the fact that might bring in new players and grow the game. I invested money in mtg cards to hide away spare change but in no way do I see it as a way to make money lol. If I buy a box of Unfinity I should only expect to break even just like any set these days. When the price of gold is at all time high this year and the value of the USD going down so much in value that a soda costs 100% more than 10 years ago. I think that Magic the Gathering is changing, but the hardcore will remain, and they will also direct the ship to a degree. It won't be EXACTLY how you want. Just like their are comic variations you don't like. In the end the ones that are less bought become more expensive to collectors due to them having fewer in circulation. I think you are looking at this personally and it is altering your projection. But, I could be wrong. I personally don´t have thousands of Euro for Cards each month, so i collect different Booster from Magic and Pokemon.
Over 5-10 years each booster will/should go up to minimum 10 bucks.
So i pay 2-4 Euro per Booster and then i minimum double my money later, so you will not loose money.
Don´t open the booster, sleeve the booster, fill up the plastic box and simple forget it for 10 years.
When i´m getting 65 years we have 50 years Magic and with 67 years we have 50th Anniversary of Pokemon.
Then you won´t have problems selling of 25 year old Booster for at least 3-5x the original price.
