I think people are getting confused about the difference between putting the transmission in (N)neutral and putting the 4×4 system in neutral, this video explains putting the 4×4 system in neutral for something like towing the vehicle, you cant tow a vehicle with the drive wheels on the ground and since the h3 is 4 wheel all the time you need to disengage this system for tow. If you put the 4×4 system in neutral you could put the transmission in (P) park and the vehicle will still roll down the street (so be careful!) You should still tow with the transmission selector handle in (N) neutral, hope this cleared up some confusion!
I was asking myself why would I need to do this ? But you just answered my Question and if I’m right this only needs to get done before towing correct ?

Do this if your locker is stuck. If the first LED (4hi) is lit but it's obviously still in 4 hi lock, do this and it will be very obvious when it switches back (you will hear easy). Mine was clicking and led switch was changing but only a click and transfer case was not shifting. Did this and finally back in reg 4hi.
So I’m trying to put the transfer case into neutral, but it will only blink for as long as you press the two buttons and then immediately turn back off. Is there something else I should look into if it’s not going into neutral?

Well. I'm screwed. My H3 only drives in 4H lock...any other selection and it wont budge. It drives fine in 4H lock though...I guess I need a new transfer case...crap...
It is not always the case... when I broke my CV shaft on trail and removed shaft (left both, inner and outer joints in) and drove home - I couldn't shift out of 4H Lock as well. As soon as I installed new CV shaft - everything was fine. So, there might be problem with differential or cv shaft...
@@NewRoad This one doesn't go offroad much..but how can it drive so nice in 4H lock but nothing else? That's what baffles me. I tried putting the transaxle in neutral, and it wouldn't go in, wouldn't move. Back in 4H lock, it runs perfect...
Because all wheel isn't full lock....it's a limited slip for all 4 wheels...when locked the front are the main turning and the rear is the limited..that's why back in the day with our square body chevys if we blew out a rear end we just removed the drive line...put it in 4 hi and abel to limp home or at least somewhere no so deep in the woods
How mechanically inclined are you? assuming dead battery. Pull up the shifter boot. Look down on the right side of the shifter, you will see a shiny silver button. Reach in and press it in, press button on the shifter and put into neutral.

The gear mechanism is plastic....so I've been told..I just got my h3 last yr. .anyway I was told it was a weak link in these and whenever the chance swap it out. I don't know but I would guess that or the plastic fork broke

If you leave the transfer case in neutral the vehicle wont drive at all, nothing is engaged. You can roll away (down a hill on the street) even if the transmission is in park, it totally disengages everything and its just freewheeling.

no. mine is a two wheel drive at the moment. about 3 months ago the front diff and axles died. i just got the money saved to have it repaired. my mechanic dislocated the front drive shaft.

@@ikajakonia8009 if only the transmission is in neutral the engine won't be spun while being towed. If the Transfercase is in neutral, the engine, transmission, and transfercase gears won't spin. putting it in neutral is an edge case for being towed or possibly maintenance. It's not for any form of driving or a way to use 2wd.
Another good reason is when you make the foolish mistake of driving down a dry highway and forgetting to take out of 4 wheel lock. The powertrain wind up can be pretty bad. You know you have this problem when you try to turn in reverse and it feels like you are stepping on the brake and H3 stops. Only real way to relive the pressure is slipping the T-case into Neutral. Want to ask how I know this. Was a real head scratcher trying to back into a parking stall at our rescue hall after a call. Thankfully I didn't break anything.
@@proaudiodm8161 no i think he means that putting it in neutral relieves the wound up pressure, then after putting it in neutral immediately putting it back in normal driving mode. You cant drive it in neutral, nothing is engaged.
Great video. One question I had the 4x4 transfer case in Neutral (forgot to put it back to 2H) and tried to change from Park to Drive to move the truck and it made a loud grinding noise, did i damage something? What causes the loud grinding noise while doing this.

Owner manual does not specify in what position - so even P is fine, but note that you should tow only with all wheels on the ground - NO Dolly Towing (2 wheels on the ground)
Should always tow in Neutral. Park has a parking pawl that holds your vehicle from rolling away. If for whatever reason your t-case pops back into gear and your tranny is in Park, it will be a costly fix. Ideally, the best way to tow is to remove the drive shaft from the rear axle and tie it up out of the way. Or just remove it completely and throw it in the back of your rig.

Are you referring to 4Low or 4LowLock? Try to put transmission in N and then try to switch. This video is for Hummer H3 btw.

Get a new battery or use a kill switch rather than leave it parked. It will solve way more issues than you think is possible

What if the reason you need a tow is that your car won’t start? How do you get H3 2008 in neutral to tow then?
I guess flatbed towing is one of the answers.

All H3s' are driving in 4x4 (but without lock). You should have the leftmost setting/light on

Followed all these steps, and my 08 h3 t case won't shift to neutral! Also, abs light is on, and the h3 won't shift into 4 low.
