    2) I turn on the base stations together with my wheel base and some headsets don't even have them. Steam VR automatically starts with the game, so does Oculus when you put the headset on. I never need to calibrate again if once done before. For me and most others the additional step is just to wear the headset.

  • @MixedRealitySimRacing

    1) I always have a fan pointed towards me, keeps me cool and the headset from fogging up, can drive for hours that way. Did some endurance races in iR including triple stints for example.

    4) games usually can look as good as on flat screen if the PC is powerful enough to achieve it. Of course depending on the headset resolution it can look more pixelated. For best results you probably need 130-150% super sampling on lower res headsets. On the other hand you get things with VR a flat screen just can't, no matter how shiny things look and that's real scale and depth.

    For 2, that's more my problem with sim racing, rather than vr. With vr that doesn't need base stations its simple and fast, but I hate needing to set up my wheel and pedals every time if I want a quick racing session. I usually end up not doing it and playing a non racing game instead

  • @12chrisrob

    I use a CV1 and I find that to get started, I only need to start the Oculus program. Maybe that's because it uses fixed sensors that I don't have to move at all. When I start AC, LFS, DR 2.0 or iRacing, no need to setup anything, and they all offer a button mapping so you can set the view reset on your wheel. Once I'm sit in my rig, I just press the button and that's it. I must say that it is true that after 40 mins or so, it's get pretty hard for the eyes. But seeing the world in 3d, looking at the apex and seeing the car in 3d makes so much difference. I can race so much closer to other racers without contacting because of the VR. Makes racing a lot of more fun!!

  • @karmalicious1000

    I use the Quest 2 wireless and a Playseat.
    I can very much relate to the set up part but with a playseat and Quest 2 it really isn't harder than sitting down in the couch once you have pcars2 (my goto car game) setup.
    I had some issues with the headset in terms of comfort when I first got it but now I more often just forget it's there. The eye scratch? Yeah, I constantly scratch the headset because I forget I have it on.
    The graphics are indeed something that surprised me. Sure, I don't have the best headset but it does not feel like that is the problem. Pop ins and stuff in pcars disturb the immersion at times.
    I think all your points are valid and people should see if the games they want (enough of them) to play are supported and borrow a headset if possible. I play Elite and quite a few other VR games so for me the 300 USD on a headset was no issue. My steering wheel cost more. 😅

  • @MixedRealitySimRacing
    @MixedRealitySimRacing 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    5) But quite a lot are: AC, ACC, Pcars1-3, Richard Burns Rally (mod), AMS1 (mod), AMS2, iRacing, Race Room, rFactor2, Dirt 1, Dirt 2, Euro Truck Sim, Kart Kraft or plenty flight sims which are also cool. And it's also easy to find out before getting into it. Regarding Forza it's mainly an Xbox game so no surprise.

  • @mattBLACKpunk

    I absolutely love racing in vr, even with the potato settings I have to use on my pc.
    Vr in dirt rally and project cars 2 was actually what got me into sim racing
    Edit: the eye strain definitely gets better after getting used to it, the discomfort from wearing the headset for a long time is definitely real tho. With the long session lengths in pcars for example, it can get a bit painful haha
    As I keep my sensors and headset plugged in all the time, setup for me is just putting the rift on^^

    • @OCRacing
      @OCRacing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, setup for me is a much bigger deal 😅

  • @markp2085

    Very interesting since I am thinking of getting a headset. I wonder if many of those issues are the result of the type of headset you are using? I know about the hassle of setting everything up. I use a GT lite racing rig, so I have to pull it out and set it up. My desk is too high when I am sitting in it so I use a folding table to place the monitor on at a lower height. Then I have to hook up the head tracking for the trackir clone I use. I remove the buttkicker off my chair and move it to the racing rig. I then run afterburner, ryzenmaster, opentrack, Logitech G Hub, Voicemeeter banana, simhub, crewchief (depending on the game), content manager (for assetto corsa), steam, smart game booster (because of a bug in my system that will not allow certain apps to run unless I stop cortana and a few other things... don't ask), DTS-x, because the surround sound that comes with my Logitech G pro x is not very good, and finally equalizer APO and Peters Peace addon for the equalizer. The G pro x sounds way better when running the equalizer APO. If I am not having some type of software issue, then I can finally start the game. Every time Windows has an update, it breaks my sound and I have to re-install equalizer APO and reset some sound configurations. Then if I am playing star citizen or elite dangerous, I remove the steering wheel and shifter and add my hotas, joystick, and keyboard. But ohhhh, I have sooo much fun with these (Toys) whenever I get to play. I am 52, so life gets in the way far too much.

  • @someo2040

    Having only a single monitor with my wheel permanently attached to my desk but not right in front, I actually find my oculus quest less hassle than having to move my monitor and speakers to the side and back when I want to race. Helps that its much cooler than racing on the flat screen as well.

    if by "having a VR headset strapped onto your face can get quite uncomfortable after a while" you mean that the headset rests on or seems to drag down your cheeks, try putting a counterweight to the headstrap. i have a battery bank for my quest 2 and it's a lot more comfortable compared to not having a battery bank on the back.

    3) guess it depends on the headset, settings, PC performance, if you get used to or maybe some are more sensible. When I use high res and fps I can drive for 5 hours without issues. My back hurts from the seat before my eyes from the headset. You definitely need to have a quite high end PC especially for demanding games.

    The eyestrain honestly sounds like you haven't set your IPD correctly on your Vive Pro, which will cause your eyes to sit slightly cross-eyed or wall-eyed in order to focus. Look up IPD setting guides, use the credit card method or some other way, or just try a different setting and see how it feels. If you get it right, there should be no more eyestrain than looking through a pair of glasses all day.

    In a vr set, you are not looking into a screen two inches in front of your face. It's not even possible for your eyes to focus that close. The optics simulate a screen much further away. The oculus stuff is 1.5 meters i think. In this regard, vr is better than looking an screens, unless you play on a big ass tv.

    First: Most people get used to all the uncomfortable things. At least I did.
    Second: if you buy a more modern Headset, you don't need these stupid poles to let the Headset know where it is. You start the game in VR and done.
    I recommend the Reverb G2 btw.
    And last but not least: The new F1 does support VR ;-)

    For me it really comes down to the price & space... VR would cost less and take less space, than a single big screen, or god help my wallet, 3 screens... I'd probably prefer 3 monitors or projector for long periods of time, but VR would still be better than my single tiny screen I have now...

    I thought dirt rally 2.0 looked very good with medium setting and ultra textures
    Plus you can never spend time focusing on your dashboard, your eyes are always on the road
    It's still the most immersive VR simulator outside of the textures being "slightly" blurry when you look at them very closely

    • @OCRacing
      @OCRacing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I might have to go in and dedicate more time to figuring out the settings. Looking forward to future VR rally games in the future though

    I own a Rift CV1. I wish i realised before buying how hot it will get. I get pretty hot pretty quick. So that was kinda my biggest regret.
    Setup is not that big of a deal because i dont unplug it everytime. It is pretty much ready to go when i want it to.
    Thing is. Like you are saying. Most times i just want to game a bit after a long day. And altough VR is way more immersive and really fun, it is indeed not as relaxing. Making me choose the single monitor quite often.
    Also i was shocked that i needed to pretty much learn to drive again. Because everything looks huge in VR compared to a 22'' screen, i missed all my braking points and apexes. Got used to that though and switching is not a problem.
    It did NOT make me faster. However. For drifting.... I got WAY WAY WAY!!!! better. Just because i could look into the corner instead of only straight ahead, my angles were much better. There was the biggest gain for me. Not expected. But VR drifters have an actually great advantage over single screen users. Dont know about tripple screens. But i still think VR is OP when drifting.
    Last thing. The WOW factor, that magical feeling, that extreme emersion.... It will fade. I know i am playing a game. That initial beeing blown away feeling wont ever come back again. Sad truth. I think that is why i often game on the monitor. The comfort is better and that wow factor of vr has faded. (But its still freaking awesome)

      Totally agree on the “wow” factor fading away although it’s always fun to see friends and family trying it out for the first time and seeing their reactions.

    I have the Quest 2; it's pretty easy to set up as it doesn't have cameras and only requires a single cable from the PC to the headset. But I couldn't use it for more than minutes because of the motion sickness, I almost threw up!
    It's better to test your games and stomach by borrowing a headset before committing to buy one.

    • @OCRacing
      @OCRacing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Motion sickness with VR definitely affects some more than others. I’ve never felt any (major) problems while some friends who’ve tried it out definitely have.

    • @mpholicx2
      @mpholicx2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you use airlink or Virtual Desktop you don't need any cables for the Questc2.
      I have no problem with motion sickness or comfort issues.
      I have an extra battery on the back of headset for counterbalance. I never get tired of playing in VR.

    VR is great and not for everyone
    It’s cheaper than getting all accessories to look like you’re in a sim
    Have you ever raced in real life? Put on a helmet and tell me how much you sweat 😂 plus it’s much heavier.

    1: vr technology isn't that great yet - for consumer prices
    2: one needs an rtx 3090 and still will get low fps on racing games, at least with oculus quest 2
    3: A tad of a hassle to use with non vr games

    1- plug the vr sensors.
    2 - turn on the wheel
    3- Sit down in my rig
    4- put the helmet on.
    5 done!

    Eye strain/fatigue depends entirely on the headset you're using. This has t odo with the refresh rate and not the game implementation.
