Nice break down. I respectfully , have a different view on a couple things you said.
1st if the gas plan required that position it becomes mute when you take accurate effective fire, ie a round in the plates.
2nd- At that moment you must move to a new position.
3rd- the ofc violated the 4 P’s- people pick patterns of predictability. Any 10 yr old who plays call of duty can see this pattern and hold on a corner and ambush you when you play tactical peek a boo. The ofc did not hold the corner. He kept popping in and out.
5 -U.S construction does not make that corner cover but concealment.
    6. While the 2 man got the job done, considerations: either move the officer or cover, not both. Yes the safety was on and his finger was off the trigger. I am not concerned with the flagging during the drag because of the preceding two safety factors and his level of experience. But either prep for an assault or counter assault or move with speed to a now position with at least a corner or cover between you and ave of approach.
Had the susp assaulted fwd the gunfight would have been in the open and with the down ofc in the middle.
Last , comms could have been more clear. Such as “callsign had been hit in the plates but is green or ok. Next example callsign down request immediate support, moving back, wait out… or something per SOP that tells everyone that cell is out of the fight and you react per SOP for contact on exterior , ofc down.
There is always room for inprovement. Thats what makes pro’s , pro’s! D Team is in the top 3 teams in the nation in my opinion and of those 3, I would say my first choice, the majority of the time. But even the best critique themselves if they worth anything at all.

If you already taken a round from enemy fire and you return to the same location will guarantee you will become a liability. Rodney stated he have no visual of the target but still return the the same spot seconds later require some training not only for himself but the whole department. If you were able to locate where the enemy shots are coming from and move to better a advantage point I can almost guarantee a better outcome. Fast recovery Rodney!

0:25 Respectfully it was a very stressful situation, but the barrel aimed at the Officer while being dragged after he was shot was hard to watch. Training should be intense enough that barrel discipline is maintained at the worst of times.

I would expect any SWAT cop with their experience level to be that cool under pressure. If you can't be, then SWAT isn't your path. Great group of men, those LAPD SWAT guys. Shout out to Rick Anzaldo & Wilson Wong for all your wisdom over the years! Your thoughts about being too tight on the corner of the house (crowding cover) vs. pieing off a bit more, although all their tools were stacked against the house.

I know you said Rodney took the round to the best like a champ. Can we also agree he took a round to the neck like a champ also?
And honest question. Is it a natural body thing to fall down after being shot? I mean i know certain places like the pelvic bowl you will. I didn't know that you would in the neck. No judgment. Rodney is a fucking stud as far as I'm concerned

Goes to show how worried you need to be as a cop in California. You take a round to the chest and still are looking to used less lethal tools.

Great breakdown. Rodney was a bad-ass. I have a question about him staying on point after the hit. Is that normal protocol? Or is it an instance by instance situation? Is it ultimately the shot officer's call if he wants to stay on or not?
Love to see the hustle guys! I hear you've got new tunes. The intro is pretty cool. And I loved Kyle cracking some jokes :)

Good morning gentleman! I was wondering if y’all could give me some advice on what career in law enforcement I should follow? I’m currently in college going to graduate in a year with a degree in national security and emergency management. I started trooper academy and realized I would’ve hated that career path so I’m doing school now.

After 30-years of enjoying all that LE has to offer, my advice is to be a hose dragging firefighter. LE careers aren't what they used to be, but, if that is your calling, get some street experience at a department that will provide you with an opportunity to deal with real bad guys. Then go the Fed path and join DEA. Former experienced street cops make the best Feds. I would have told you FBI or ATF would have also been a viable Fed path, but they are ALL kinds of jacked up politically these days.

Why haven't they updated the vest to cover the neck area?

Certain details within special ops will utilize additional protection for the neck, however, it restricts lateral movement. An officer within a special detail like this one needs to be able to look left, right, up & down very quickly and easily, and not have any restrictions.
In 99% of situations, the swat operator will be a more effective shooter than the suspect, so neck protection isn't usually of concern.

  • @michaelrowland4021

Great breakdown, however you can see that both Rodney and the other officer was right hand. Its important that you be able to use your weapon in the left hand as well as the right. By keeping the weapon in your right when looking around a corner on the right side present more of your body as a target. Swat should be training this way. I hope Rodney is doing better and healing fine.
