Fellow allotmenteer gave me a tip yesterday to cook runner beans in a different way: Finely chopped onions in a tspn of olive oil lightly fry til soft Add your chopped runner beans into the pan and cover with a tight lid Leave to sweat lowest heat for around 15 mins or so or until soft. No water unless sticking to pan. Voila! Soft delicious runner beans! Tried it this morning. Fab! 👍👍
I'm having a decent crop of beans and they're from kept seeds that my mother grew since the 80's and the germination is always way better than bought seeds.
🤣 Genuine huge LOL at the escalating mystery of the Cauli in the wrong bed, that you didn’t sow, and in fact have NO SEEDS for! LOLOL!!! 😆 Proper mystery.
Ahhhhhhhh! You made my day! Thank you!!!! I know it's silly but the sparkles and stars (and exploding peas) just make me so happy - it's so different. Romanesco IS delicious. What a delicious mystery.
Got bags of weeds and cut back yesterday and today. Already can't wait to get organised for autumn. So many things have bolted this year for me. Never mind, as you say, there's always next season.😊
Hi Danny Another great video just a tip I use the fruit nets you can buy at the supermarket for buying your fruit and veg they are a nice size and have a draw string top.I find them ideal for putting collected seeds in and drying out herbs. I get mine from Lidl or Asda you get 2 net bags for 49p . Hope this helps a cheap solution I think thank you for your time Danny Val.
So many seed to collect already mate. My musa has also got large this year and Ive taken 6 pups off it, ideal to over winter them. Your fig is Brown Turkey. Dont cut the branch yet Layer it first and you can get another plant.
Yeah totally tony. The banana plant is 3 years old now. I overwinter it outdoors..always does well. No I won't cut it off. I've decided to try and rescue it for now. Danny
Your beans really are fabulous aren’t they? I love that you got a surprise romanesco. My kalibos are supposed to be read.. they are not. They look healthy but I was so disappointed. Every time I see yours I turn a little bit 🤢 with envy 😂 Good to hear the lives will be back. Scary to think how fast this year is going and autumn is already approaching 😅😅 The plots are looking great and the height of productivity ❤
Another great video full of tips and tricks. It seems French beans have done so well across the country. Good to hear your brassica recommendations. My cauliflowers all blew too. I reckon it was the extreme heat and rain coming at the wrong times. We win some, we lose some!
I think that too! You can't win them all.. or it would be boring wouldn't it haha.. yes French beans have been good all round for me. Get some April spring cabbages. You won't regret it. Danny 🌱
Thank you for the cabbage seeds Danny. Your clematis flower is so pretty. Thanks for the beans, too. You still have to have the sweet William seedlings.
Looking forwards to seeing the lives come back, love them ❤ Might see you at Malvern me and my Auntie are going on the Sunday too 😊 thanks for all the brilliant content, get so many tips and inspiration from your videos x
My brassica cage keeps the predators out well enough to let the aphids take over 😂 I grew romanesco but I didn’t get to eat any!🐌 As always it’s all looking gorgeous on your plot. ❤
Great video, Danny. Thank you for the tips. I ALWAYS get asparagus beetle that I spend hours squishing to save the leaves being stripped. None this year. Anyone else noticed no asparagus beetle this year?
I love Romanesco I found an Italian recipe for the first one couldn’t find it again for the second but roasted yum yum. Hope you found a good recipe and enjoyed your surprise one. I decided last week to plant out my collards seedlings that had hardly grown past the initial growth and thrilled this am to see they are going ahead despite the current change in weather. All netted so hoping Danny I will get something. Globe artichokes I grew beautiful flowers but I hated them as a vegetable definitely an acquired taste.

Fantastic, what a great harvest Danny. If you do give the fig tree a chop back, be careful as the tree sap burns and causes blisters. I am also looking forward to the live shows. Have a wonderful week and take care for now 😘
Thank you Michelle. I weirdly learnt that the other day when I was looking up something. I never knew. Yes the lives are coming back. What have I done 😂😂😂🙈
Hello! I had it with a swede mash. I planned to do so much kayaking but sadly the last 2 times I got in my ribs were aching after. So I've had to take it easy. Hopefully soon!!!
Haha that's a great surprise - I left my poor romanesco seedlings in their tray for too long to plant out so I'll have to try again next year. Right, that's it - I'm off to order a fig & add purple French beans to my list for next year! 💜 Ps I absolutely love artichoke - yours look delicious. I planted mine in the winter so looking forward to my first harvest (can't see any on there yet!).
Oh we've all done that with a tray of plants. I hope they don't look at all the other plants in the ground and think " why was I left on the shelf 🥲". 😂🙈 Haha A Fig tree would be a great edition! Why am I not shocked you like artichokes. You're very posh ya know 😂❤️🌱
You should have eaten your Romanesco by now. Personally my family love. it- so delicious. I am a bit useless at growing it sadly :-( Maybe the secret is to pretend it's a Brussels sprout, ha ha. My Blauhilde are flowering abundantly but don't seem to be setting an beans. Do you have any tips please Danny or anyone else? Cheers My runner beans , cobra and Spagno Bianco are all setting abundant pods. Great sweet pea pod tip. Thank you also for telling us about Kalibos cabbage. It looks so nice that i've just ordered some seed to have a go at growing. 🙂Happy gardening
I did eat it.. straight away that night. Was delicious. It identified as a sprout. But was just as delicious. Mine took a while to set too this year. Now they are prolific. Be patient. I've always found they come a little later. I hope you get some!! I really do! I'm also pleased to see you've got some kalibos. They really are a delicious and bright pink / purple cabbage. Even jane kelly rates them highly! Danny 🌱
I remember the very first time I ever tasted a fig it was over 50year's ago I was working in France grape picking and the French men and women where picking them and eating them , they looked disgusting they where trying to get me to eat one No way was I trying one 😂 it was a joke to them trying to get me to eat one I gave in and tried one there was no stopping me once I tried that first one , only fig I ate was the ones in a box dried my mother always bought them at Christmas no comparison, I've had the twin's to your cauli 🙄 but strange thing is it was only half I did 2 types top lot in the bed where OK ish bottom ones different variety where cr@p 🤔, Lovely harvest danny enjoy 👍
I have a funny memory too! I would never have tried a Fig. I was in Egypt and they ran out of all jams except Fig jam. I didn't want to eat a dry croissant..so had it with butter and Fig jam..that was the start of my love of Figs. Caulis are a fussy thing to grow in my opinion. Never mind Elizabeth. Next year for us! Haha
Hey Danny, everything is looking lush and brimming full of produce even though it is at the end of the season. At least, you have another season to plant and harvest. My garden is toast for me though. We have a heat dome parked over us in NW New Mexico, and it will be staying for awhile. Thank goodness I get to see you planting on!
Romanesco are so delicious. hey are a cross between cauliflower and broccoli tasting. I love them raw dipped in a veggie dip. I am jealous of you I have been trying for 3 years to get one to produce and it never happens and you have one that just pops up. LOL
cheers for the update on the pea/bean seeds savings. I'm really going for that this year, that way I can save money on crops I love and only pay for new/f1 variety seeds :) BTW regarding the fig not sure what your have, but little miss figgy is a good one for small gardens. it's a dwarf variety so it won't grow out of control.
I love to watch all the allotment channels but as a back yard gardener in Minnesota USA (real cold winters here - the kind where you can drive trucks across frozen lakes cold) so I am often jealous of your planting winter crops!! 😂
Haha thank you! Well I'd happily swap! I love the cold and I love the snow even more! But I understand your frustration if it's too cold to grow them. That's not good is it..
I picked and cooked my first 2 sweetcorn (called Incredible) today and they were just the most delicious thing. Great video and lovely harvests due to your hard work.
I think mine were called incredible.. they are almost ready.. the strangest thing though is they didn't grow tall... did yours ? Mine are knew high with loads of cobs.
@@TheGrowUpChannel Mine are tall and have 2/3 cobs on each but I don't know if they will all ripen. I had a different variety last year and the cobs were larger as were the kernels - can't remember the variety but they only gave one cob per plant.
The most repeated saying by allotmenteers this year…. There’s ALWAYS NEXT YEAR! New subscriber here. Im gutted with my tomatoes this year. My best crops have been cucumbers and beans! Not even courgettes! Your plot looks great.
Hi Danny. Not sure if you've ever tried cabbage shredded and cooked in butter? Not only is it gorgeous, but also freezes well. Have you had any interesting footage from your your wildlife cameras recently? I was just wondering if the hedgehogs have been around at all. Have a fabulous week ahead xx
@@TheGrowUpChannel I melt a knob of butter in a pan, add the shredded cabbage and cook until soft. I like it when the cabbage just starts to brown. It really is delicious. Hope you enjoy it too xx
Love it Danny your plots have done so well. You always do well with your swedes. I just can’t get them to bulb up ever. Also I never know what to do with red cabbage what dyu do?
Well lynne! I can tell you what you might be doing.. all brassicas are forgiving with a bit of extra leg. Except the swede. If they are leggy you'll get long thin swede. They need to be sown at the right time and I tend to pot them on.. then plant out as established plants. I literally just leave them. I never water them. Unless they are dying of death.. I've never had that issue either. Hope his helps. I'll make a note to pop on a future video when to sow swede for you next year. Also dont plant them too close. They hate it. The red cabbage I use like normal cabbage. Steamed or boiled or pickled. 😊
@@TheGrowUpChannel cheers Danny some help with swede will be most appreciated maybe another grow along, I didn’t bother last year cos I have such a problem growing them. ❤️
Fab update video Danny ❤ Those figs look delicious 😋 I've never tried a fresh fig. Going to be a few years before ours have figs but looking forward to trying them. Those blauhilda beans look fab, do they taste like normal runner beans? I put my sweet pea seeds in a paper bag, when they pop they fall to the bottom of the bag and you can write on the bag what variety they are. Never tried romanesco did you try it after? That cabbage was amazing wasn't it. Looking forward to seeing you at the Feel Good Garden Café soon 🤭 😂
Hey Linda! Well stop hinting! I shall sell you one fig for £2 😂😂 yeah the blauhilde taste just like a French bean. Ask Cheryl. She had a pile the other day. I'll give you some next time I see you. The romanesco tasted like a crowd between a cabbage/ broccoli and cauliflower. It was delicious !!
@@TheGrowUpChannel I don't mind buying a fresh fig to try it, thanks Danny 😋 Well worth growing romanesco then, I think I have some seeds in my seed box. Don't mind sharing with you 👍
@@TheGrowUpChannel Geez that's inflation gone mad. 😂 Missing you at the allotments, must try to get there to open the café earlier..... At least we're getting more done on our plots 😂
Morning Benny, I had a question about Greek gigantes, do I need to leave the pods on the vine to dry for seed saving or can I pick them and dry in the house? Great seed sharing who needs 3000 cabbage 😂😂. It’s all good go pick and process at this time but it’s all looking fabulous. Self pruning fig tree 😢😢. I’m hoping my sedum will attract lots of bees as they have in the past. Everything is looking a,along and lush, have a stupendous week ahead, Jackie ☔️🇨🇦
Hey Ali!!! I always leave on the vines..unless you have a pest.. maybe net them? You usually have a pest eating your things haha! I usually just leave until the dry out there, unless they are close to ripening and a rains storm is due .. then I take off ..but the issue I have doing that is. I find sometimes they are picked too soon and don't germinate the following year. It's a gamble Danny 🌱
Hi Danny just want to thank you for another great video. I was wondering how do you store your seed potatoes for next year? Looking forward to the live show. Liz
Hello. Thank you. I usually wrap them in newspaper in a cool dark place (in a cardboard box) over winter but as soon as the temperatures rise. Get them straight onto a windowsill or they'll shoot. Danny 🌱
Could the Romanesco be there as a seed from the previous tenant's plant? It's not in my top 50 veg to eat LOL Sweet pea time for me next week. Some experts are predicting a huge increase in wasps next year as there are so few this year! No-dig is a concept, not a religion - we do as we must! Greek Gigantes only have a few seeds in the pods, still using mine as butter bean from last year as I had a mega harvest! Whose round is it at Malvern? LOL See you soon!
No I definitely planted it. I watched back on my video ha. I liked the taste steamed on a roast. Beautiful! Don't eat the sweetpeas Steve... and it's definitely your round at malvern 🤣🤣🤣
@@TheGrowUpChannel LOL, that's why i started filming - memory like a sieve! Yep, sweet peas seeds are quite poisonous (I'm surprised you reminded me 🤣😂🤣) Darn it, I'll start saving my pension leftovers to buy you a half at Malvern then PMSL
Aren't you worried about club root, a lot of UK Allotment growers seem to repeat 2 or 3 brassica crops after each other, have garden in the same spot 32 years, rotation is my thing, have never had club root. Have 3 or 4 years no brassicas, have separate beds for winter and summer brassicas. Have 9 beds.
It's never been an issue for me. It's a new plot. I do rotate the beds though. It's a new plot and that's the only free bed for the cabbages this year. Once the plot is established I'll have more scope to move things about. 😊
Hi Danny…I love Romanesco. Frustratingly my first year (2020) those & my cauliflower were beautiful, ever since a disaster! I do have clubroot but this doesn’t seem to affect my other brassicas. I even tried a new variety this season but they blew so might not bother anymore. I’m thinking of trying 9 star broccoli as it’s a perennial & apparently a bit of a cross? I’m not great with cabbage as grow them at the wrong time of year….always ready in summer when ideally I want them winter!!
Great video Danny. With so many varieties of beans growing, would saved seeds grow true to type? I tried Greek Gigantes last year and they were small. I plan to try again this year but seeds are really hard to come across here in NZ so I want to grow them to increase seed supply. But I want to grow beansxto eat also. I will plant them on opposite sides of the garden to keep them pure.
They do! I've also had some issues with gigantes. Sometimes on the same vine. I'd have purple runnerbeans & Greek gigantes haha! Keep at them. They usually turn true after 2 years. (So I've experienced) I'd definitely keep them further apart if you wish to keep them more pure. I've found blauhilde and most runner (pole) beans stay true.. it's those gigantes haha
Plot next to Fig and Olive looks abandoned this year. Could a third plot be on the cards Danny? Too late…I relocated my 5 yr old crowns last year and I let them go through a growth cycle without harvesting. They are just starting to emerge for the second season in the new location, would you leave them for another year, pick only a few this time, or harvest as normal? Appreciate your feedback.
Are you trying to kill me off Helen 😂 I couldn't manage a 3rd plot. I'd leave the asparagus another year.. but see how strong they look in spring. Danny 🌱
Yeah my gut is telling me to leave the asparagus another year but my taste buds are going to be hard to control 😆 What a revelation…freshly picked asparagus.
When would you tend to plant out your Lupin? I have a seedling I started from a saved seed... it has two strong looking true leaves and I'm tempted to plant it out now... but I don't want to put it out yet if the weather is not right for it.
Fellow allotmenteer gave me a tip yesterday to cook runner beans in a different way:

@@TheGrowUpChannel hahah I hope they don’t think that either, now I feel even more guilty 😂
I didn’t know certain veg was ‘posher’ than others 🙃😃
Danny 🌱
@@TheGrowUpChannel Cheers Danny 🙂
I remember the very first time I ever tasted a fig it was over 50year's ago I was working in France grape picking and the French men and women where picking them and eating them , they looked disgusting they where trying to get me to eat one No way was I trying one 😂 it was a joke to them trying to get me to eat one I gave in and tried one there was no stopping me once I tried that first one , only fig I ate was the ones in a box dried my mother always bought them at Christmas no comparison,
I've had the twin's to your cauli 🙄 but strange thing is it was only half I did 2 types top lot in the bed where OK ish bottom ones different variety where cr@p 🤔,
Lovely harvest danny enjoy 👍
I have a funny memory too! I would never have tried a Fig. I was in Egypt and they ran out of all jams except Fig jam. I didn't want to eat a dry croissant..so had it with butter and Fig jam..that was the start of my love of Figs. Caulis are a fussy thing to grow in my opinion. Never mind Elizabeth. Next year for us! Haha
Thanks for your tip to store seeds in a jar. Got lots of small pesto jars which will be perfect.
Don't seal them shut until they are fully dry. I left mine open for a month in the house before I closed :)
Thank you! Oh dear. That doesn't sound enjoyable. I'm not a huge fan of the heat. Danny 🌱
Romanesco are so delicious. hey are a cross between cauliflower and broccoli tasting. I love them raw dipped in a veggie dip. I am jealous of you I have been trying for 3 years to get one to produce and it never happens and you have one that just pops up. LOL
Oh wow!! Mine was a weed 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Woo hoo looking forward to September 26 Danny. Great video as always, the plot looks great ♥️
Looking forward to seeing you there angie. Thank you very much. Danny 🌱
So pleased to hear your lives are coming back in the autumn. They were fabulous. So interesting & informative but so fun & hilarious at times ❤
They were definitely a mixture of all of those things Margaret haha!
@@TheGrowUpChannel I can’t wait 🤩 your shows are priceless. Such fun & informative seriously can’t wait 😻😻😻
cheers for the update on the pea/bean seeds savings. I'm really going for that this year, that way I can save money on crops I love and only pay for new/f1 variety seeds :)
BTW regarding the fig not sure what your have, but little miss figgy is a good one for small gardens. it's a dwarf variety so it won't grow out of control.
Yea same. It's always wise to save seed. It really does become costly in spring. Danny 🌱
We harvested some blue potatoes recently they taste amazing so will defo be growing them for next year
Oh really! That's good to know thank you for letting me know. Danny 🌱
fab as always
Thanks lynette!
Hello Thank you for the video, I have an asparagus plant about 4 years old, so hopefully next year might be the year for me to harvest 😊.
Oh 100% is ready to harvest!
Yey! Love love love a live 👏👏👏
Thanks Lisa! 😊😊
I dont even like corn 😂 I like the structure on the plot..they are ankle biters this year.
Really looking forward to the lives again xx
Thank you Tracey 😊🌱
The most repeated saying by allotmenteers this year…. There’s ALWAYS NEXT YEAR! New subscriber here. Im gutted with my tomatoes this year. My best crops have been cucumbers and beans! Not even courgettes! Your plot looks great.
Courgette and tomatoes were my failures this year too. Absolute disaster they both were. Never mind... dare I say it... always next year....
Been loving your content ❤
Thank you so much!! Danny 🌱
Fantastic vlog as always, thanks Danny 😊
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks Caroline.
It s great .
Thank you
I've boiled cabbage and then added butter. Is that the same ? Explain the process haha I shall check the hedgehog footage this week for you! Danny 🌱
@@TheGrowUpChannel I melt a knob of butter in a pan, add the shredded cabbage and cook until soft. I like it when the cabbage just starts to brown. It really is delicious. Hope you enjoy it too xx
@jeanholdstock3695 thank you. I shall give it a go 😊🌱
Love it Danny your plots have done so well.
I bet Alan Titchmarsh and Monty Don is desperate to get on your live streams😁.
🤣🤣🤣 only one I'd allow. You decide who haha
👍
Thank you Ashley!!! Really helps!
Lovely cabbages...have you tried fermentation? I do to my cabbages its Lovely 😊 i have also canned and frozen them 😊 enjoy 😉
What's formation? I tend to freeze mine :)
@TheGrowUpChannel oops I ment ferment ...with salt...
I would put the cabbage into the freezer ready for winter cawl.
I've considered this too as I have quite a few now
@@ibrstellar1080 shredded I presume?
It’s a great year for beans! The califlower and Broccoli are all gone to seed this year. I started new ones to go in to te garden soon 😊
Yeah I agree. We will all be living off beans for winter haha! Danny 🌱
Still watching can you organza bag the red sweet pea pods?
Oh I suppose you could!
Love your videos. It really is looking great on the plot. I saved zinnia and marigold seeds today.
Thank you Rebecca! There's plenty to do on the plot but im happy with it. Yes I'm saving zinnia and marigold too 😊
Great video Danny i've got a squash plant that i didn't plant growing in my potato bed so that curious but the plotslook great as always
Probably from last years seed I'd imagine. Nice surprise though. Danny 🌱
@@TheGrowUpChannel yes it is xx
Great video
Thank you Barbara 😊🌱
Fab update video Danny ❤
Those figs look delicious 😋 I've never tried a fresh fig.
@@TheGrowUpChannel I don't mind buying a fresh fig to try it, thanks Danny 😋
Well worth growing romanesco then, I think I have some seeds in my seed box. Don't mind sharing with you 👍
@Feelgoodgardens haha I've changed my mind. £3 now 😂😂😂 thanks Linda. Definitely going to grow them next year. Danny 🌱
@@TheGrowUpChannel Geez that's inflation gone mad. 😂 Missing you at the allotments, must try to get there to open the café earlier..... At least we're getting more done on our plots 😂
Its now £4 for ya cheek 🤣🤣 well aii you should rename it the twilight cafe! 50% off if you bring your own torch 🤣🤣
❤😊
Thank you so much Vicki! Danny 🌱
@@TheGrowUpChannel thank you dahlin ❤️❤️
@myrustygarden how many do you need to 1k now Ali? Xx
@@TheGrowUpChannel 9 🤩 unless someone leaves 🤣🤣 I dropped 2 the other day 🤦♀️
They are wise people 😂 I'm stuck with ya!!!
Danny 🌱
Thanks Danny I'll do that.
Could the Romanesco be there as a seed from the previous tenant's plant? It's not in my top 50 veg to eat LOL
Sweet pea time for me next week.
Yep, sweet peas seeds are quite poisonous (I'm surprised you reminded me 🤣😂🤣)
Darn it, I'll start saving my pension leftovers to buy you a half at Malvern then PMSL
@DigwellGreenfingers I'd never openly admit to stuffing you up Steve 😂 get someone to sip your veer beforehand.
@@TheGrowUpChannel Haha - I will!!!!!
Yay a Danny video.
Thank you 😊🌱
Would it not be possible to put a splint and a support on that Fig branch as could heal by next year.
I've done just that! You're spoiling next week's video ahhahaa!
I might try 9 star broccoli next year. If you want a winter cabbage. Sow some savoy now. Danny 🌱
👍👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤❤ here's to the algorithms 😂😂😂😂😂
Haha thanks Wendy!
Awsome video 🎉🎉
Thanks Matt. Appreciate the support 🙏 Danny 🌱
I live in zone 9 I have a banana plant but other animals seem to get my bananas first
Oh no! That's not good!
❤❤❤
Thank you for watching! Danny 🌱 ❤️
❤️
Thank you Chris 😊
😊😊
Thank you Miriam 😊😊😊
Plot next to Fig and Olive looks abandoned this year. Could a third plot be on the cards Danny?
Too late…I relocated my 5 yr old crowns last year and I let them go through a growth cycle without harvesting. They are just starting to emerge for the second season in the new location, would you leave them for another year, pick only a few this time, or harvest as normal? Appreciate your feedback.
Are you trying to kill me off Helen 😂 I couldn't manage a 3rd plot. I'd leave the asparagus another year.. but see how strong they look in spring. Danny 🌱
Yeah my gut is telling me to leave the asparagus another year but my taste buds are going to be hard to control 😆
What a revelation…freshly picked asparagus.
When would you tend to plant out your Lupin? I have a seedling I started from a saved seed... it has two strong looking true leaves and I'm tempted to plant it out now... but I don't want to put it out yet if the weather is not right for it.
Oh I over winter lupins and plant out in spring personally 😊
😊
Thank you 😊😊😊🌱
How do you store your cabbages.
Usually I freeze them or pickle for Christmas. Danny 🌱
Romanesco is delicius
I agree. I really enjoyed it 😊

What do you do with your figs Danny?x
Mr klein. I discussed that in last week's video in depth lol ! 😂

What part of Wales are you from? I’m from Wales but I’m waiting for some rain to fill my water butts.
Hello. I'm from S. Wales
My gigantes are only ok so far, many flowers just no bees to polinate them. Italian spagna are better.
Last year they wasn't as prolific as this year. Mainly because I planted them in the shade. Oh thanks I shall look out for them..Danny 🌱
