  • Wixom Lake is located in Mid Michigan. This footage was filmed on June 15, 2020. This was after the collapse of the Edenville Dam on May 19, 2020. Wixom Lake was rapidly rising due to heavy rainfall and the Edenville dam could not hold back the water. The side of the dam failed sending water rushing towards Sanford Village. The aftermath and damage left behind is devastating. Make sure you subscribe to catch the follow up videos I will be filming.

How many people notice the gull eating the fish at 10:21 and the two Mallard Ducks shortly after. Also to address why the Four Lakes Task Force does not want people walking on the lake bed. This is for safety reasons as there are still banks caving in and sink holes in the lake.

I commend you for your dedication and genuine concern for the situation and the people who have had their lives impacted by this disaster. If it was not for your documentation and coverage of this, I would not have known the scope of the damage done. It is a shame that the devastation of those communities has not attracted more attention from media and authorities. Thank you for your non-biased factual reporting of these events. I do not know what you do for a living but you have a keen eye for detail, an excellent ability to present the information and would be a fine journalist in my opinion. These qualities are a breath of fresh air in a world where disinformation and lack of integrity run rampant.
Keep up the excellent work. The people who live in those areas deserve to have their stories told, and need our help.

Thank you for still asking the pertinent question: How can "they" own the lakebed now when the didn't own the lake/dam earlier? If They owned it earlier and as fully documented failed to maintain it so as to prevent/avoid this kind of damage, then They should be legally responsible. As I said previously NO daming or empoundment of any perennial stream should ever be privately owned. Your work is quite commendable.

  • @rjgoniea
    @rjgoniea 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

People are asking how private entities can own the lake bottom. Its very simple. Frank Wixom bought the land before his company built the 4 dams. Most of that bottomland has remained the property of the companies that have owned the dam since then. Some parcels under Sanford Lake reverted back to the county when the company decided they wouldn't pay property tax on them anymore. This has all been covered in stories published in the Midland Daily News.
Technically, FLTF can't decree anything about not walking on the lake bed as the purchase from Boyce Hydro has not been completed the last time I checked. But if Boyce Hydro is letting them say it then that's their prerogative.
Great vid as always, and I am glad to hear you will be featuring the western portion of Wixom Lake in the next video. If someone hadn't asked about it already I would have.

It is actually nice to see the river flowing again the way nature intended. Those dams lasted 95 years, which is amazing for an earthen dam. I hope they let the river run wild and let the former lake bed be public lands. It would give the water someplace to go during floods. And make an amazing wildlife corridor. And some hiking trails for the humans would be great.

It's amazing how they are so eager to place all of the blame on the parts of the dam that didn't fail, with their 8x10 glossy photos of how bad the parts that are still standing were before it burst... smh "A three-paragraph Michigan inspection report of the dam in 2018 found “moderate deterioration” in the dam’s spillways but noted they “appeared to be stable and functioning normally.” It demanded no repairs." The person writing the article either didn't look at the before and after pictures, or doesn't want anyone else to...

Thank you again, Jordan for keeping everyone posted. This is a tough one, because it basically comes down to ownership, money, and regulation. The dam clearly needed a ton of work (and this was known for a long time), but the owners were unwilling or unable to fund that work (probably more the latter given that the cost to the owners would have probably been well beyond their ability to pay for).
But then we have the other side of the coin which was the obvious risk to down-stream infrastructure and residents were the dam to break (which it did, finally break). So did the state and/or city have a regulatory duty to essentially take the dam away from the owners, drain, and remove it, to remove the risk to downstream residents ? Probably yes, but at the same time I doubt the state or city would have been able to actually push through regulatory reform to that degree without losing their jobs in the next election.
If the above suppositions are even remotely accurate, does this then mean that the ultimate responsibility was actually with the voters ?
    --
There are some parallels with other disasters. In particular, Paradise California (which was destroyed in the recent fires) was not laid out in a manner that made fire protection possible. And even when they had the chance to build-in some protections such as significantly widening the main street they chose not to. Orville dam (an 'almost' disaster that took billions of dollars to fix), power line maintenance (PG&E and the CA fires), Paradise, Santa Rosa (fire breaks not built into the city plan, a city built right in the path of historical diablo fire paths). Etc.
Also mine tailings pond failures (some of which have destroyed towns and killed people in the past), coal ash pond failures, poisoned ground, contaminated ground water from O&G infrastructure, salt water inundation in Florida, and so on. This dam failure is just one of a continuous string of accidents or accidents-waiting-to-happen.
I don't think we can just place blame for these easily foreseeable events after-the-fact. If people don't want these events to happen, or be as severe in the future, then people have to vote for the types of regulation that can prevent it. Otherwise individual owners of such infrastructure can continue to put thousands of other people at risk when said infrastructure fails. Its a bit of a conundrum, because in many states it is not possible to vote for such reforms and still remain in office due to the 'trampling' of individual property rights (regardless of the risk to other people). That's the real crux of the issue.
    -Matt

It's a class of problem that is hard you action in a democracy. Any time you need to take a *costly precaution* then all you can do is spend the money and open yourself to criticism by people who assert it wasn't yet critical risk, or don't spend and get away with it, until you don't.

One thing to keep in mind when wanting to "blame" people there's plenty to go around. Federal government has nothing to do with the upkeep of state roads, dams, etc. States are given the money specifically to address these issues, however it doesn't mean the money may have gone somewhere else as proven in other states during disasters. The infrastructures here in the USA were built to last 50 yrs and we are well past that TF. Some states have taken the initiative to fix this problems while other states have not. The government there received the money--the question should be "where did it get used?" or "who's pocket did it go in to?". It will come out in the end, so why worry about it now? Another question to ask is why can't you walk on the lake bed? This makes me wonder what they are trying to hide--just food for thought. I know this doesn't help those without insurance for this type of disaster, but it's all things that came to light even after Harvey and Katrina. Even talking with people in Louisiana after being relocated there temporarily, we found out from them if you choose to live in a dam area you are pretty much screwed in terms of insurance flooding terms. The system needs changing definitely, but keep in mind they always have a reason for those clauses as we found. Many blessings to the residents there and may the community receive the help it needs!

Jordan Mowbray I guess they want there waterfront value back. It is so bueatiful the way it is now, but money talks. Maybe a cover up? Oooooo! They are all at fault, it was all about the money. Sad.

Excellent work, Jordan. Have you seen or heard anything about the houses in between the M-30 bridges? I think there are 4 or 5 in a little subdivision. They will continue to be inaccessible until one of the bridges is repaired. You should interview one of those people if you can.

Great commentary on this video thanks for sharing, The fly overs that just gives you a perspective that really demonstrates the magnitude of the event. As others have said your doing a great service for the community of Michigan try to get a hold of Charlie Labuff I think is how you spell it he seems like a great guy so he might have connections. But you don’t need help documenting it! Man it’s just crazy how much the water excavated the land and made whole new open spaces. 😬 Thanks for your work.

Nice job on the updates. I noticed that you focused on the destruction of wixom lake near the southern end by the dam. What is the upper area look like? Is it as bad? Do you or are you able to show footage from that area? examples, wixom lake by Estey rd., Pleasant beach resorts and cabins, Strykers marina, and other points in that section? Is it even accesible?

The saddest part is the Lake will never be allowed to be rebuilt. The Sierra Club is already lining up to stop any rebuilding hoping to get the river back into a more natural form. Imagine forking over big money to live on a lake and no El Ziltcho!!!

HI Jordan. I want to thank you for another update. You do 1 heck of a job flying the drone and the great coverage we get to see in places you cant go. I want to PLEASE PLEASE ask you to not try and get permission to walk on the lake. I understand you said you can't but someone made a comment to try. The lake from what my eyes see is very very dangerous and I want to see you be safe from harms way. Again thank you for the amazing but such devastating damage. I can't even begin to imagine what the people in these communities are going through. It makes me sad but I know God is and will watch over these people. Jordan , again I want to thank you and be safe and take care. Again big hugs to you and all from Iowa.

They have to travel up and around the north side of the lake. There is a few houses on land between the two rivers that residents have not been able to get back to though.

I think it’s really great of you to highlight the environmental disaster this dam burst has caused and the effect it is having on residents and their properties. It must be awful to know that your home you have cherished by the lake is now almost worthless. I dare say there will be fault found and massive claims sought against whoever, in time (hopefully sooner rather than later)
I live in the U.K., so don’t get to see this type of disaster often - the last dam that was on the brink of collapse was in Whaley Bridge, last year. There was lots of coverage on the news and residents were evacuated - look it up. It was small scale compared to this, but just as scary for those that live in the vicinity. I live 17 miles away from it so it’s close by but far away enough not to have been a threat to my town.

I would like to explore and see what is left from before the lakes where made, I also wonder how much it would cost to build a concrete dam in place of the earthen parts.

  • @harryberry474
    @harryberry474 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

So it's back to a River...like it should have always been. Honestly that wasn't a very good place to begin with for a dam. The deepest part of the lake was only 40ft the majority much more shallow.
Dams are usually built in ravines not in such low/flat areas such as where this dam was. The dam itself was a disaster in the making with too few spillways and an earthen emergency spillway.
I feel sorry for the thousands of lives that have been affected by this man made disaster, most (if not all) have only known this area as it was before the dam failure. Very sad indeed.
The owner(s0 of the dam should be held liable but they'll probably file for bankruptcy. The home owners along the lake are truly left high and dry, the people below that got flooded out many of them have truly lost everything.

Was the lake good fishing ? Do you think most got washed down stream .... ? I would think many would have tried to swim upstream. Do you know how many homes were flooded downstream? Wouldn’t the dam owner have insurance? Great video, thanks!

The river water seems to be clearing up a bit. How much sediment was deposited downriver? Does anybody know? Is there any way to estimate it? Is water from wells downstream still potable? How are the town's population coping?

Dam failure is wet dirt, which is due to insufficient internal drainage. It turned to mud and flumped out. The bridge will need a full foundation inspection. Are you doing a vid on where the boats went? (And the chairs and stuff)

Follow up question. How much did the water levels rise after the snow melted? Are local officials preparing for the snow melt come
next spring? Or, is this not a major factor? Here in Colorado, fast snow melts can create significant problems. Which agency monitors
the water rise of the dams? Have they looked at future scenarios of water levels without the dams? Would this impact communities
even more? Hope my questions are not too technical. to to look at what might happen 12 months from now. OK, keep us updated!
