Join me as I listen to them for the very first time and blow many of my preconceptions out of the water.

Melvin, at their core they are a punk rock band that knows no boundaries, they play whatever they want, no worries about genres..........we call it Band-Maid doing Band-Maid things !😮
😏♥️🎙🎸🥁😎🤘
I love that analogy 😁
Best band on Earth! The number of exceptional songs will blow your mind! I saw them 3 times last year! Band-Maid is the truth!😊
Three times last year? What a treat 🤟
They have never advertised themselves as a metal band. Always hard rock but they do have metal elements (especially recently) in their songs. This reminds me of the rock music I listened to in the 80s. Great riffs and fun catchy choruses but more complex musically.
If you want to see what they can really do musically then check out their instrumental From Now On. Even has its own MV.
I've only read a few comments so far, and this track has already had two recommendations... 🤔
Melvin, it's funny you mentioned Guns & Roses. Guess who band made opened for when they tour japan yup guns and roses @@melvinthinks
Perhaps the lineup order should have been the other way round 😜
@@melvinthinks I agree , my prediction is that the band of maids will go down as one the greatest rock bands in ...............
I've seen them live twice in year , thankfully I live in Chicago where we draw some great bands n hands down the band of maids r a gift to us all , fly pigeon fly , po! I speak pigeon now
THE best band on Earth. Think that covers everything.
Wait a minute, now… um, okay, yeah that checks out… 😁
Yes
Amen to that!!!
Well said.
What about Coldplay? 🤣😀🤣
Yo Melvin, me thinks you're going to LOVE this band. Especially when they integrate metal into their music. Check out the MV for their latest instrumental FROM NOW ON. A rock/metal/prog gem that will let you know their current direction. Peace. 2.55
+1
Does no one recommend "Don't You Tell Me" anymore? I didn't think it was too bad.😏
@@GaryHolloway-810 They will when BAND-MAID uploads it from yesterday's concert. Melvin leans toward metal anyway. I have to pick my spots for DYTM recommendations.😢
Cheers dude! 🤟👍
5 grown women from Japan wearing maid outfits remind the world about times when Rock still could be fun. Oh - they define the concept as a "gap" (the distance between what you see and what you hear).
They are truly genre-agnostics. Over the years they have gone from "j-rock" to becoming harder and harder after Kanami started to compose all their music with input from the instrumentalists. For a sample of them recently, do their official live video combining "Manners" leading straight into "Black Hole". It is a masterclass of controlled chaos. Good luck with your journey
Thank you! Am definitely interested to hear more 🤟🤟🤟
I predict that if you listen to this song a few more times you'll hear more and more interesting things in it, and if you listen to even a few more of their songs you'll like the band more and more. Sunday evening in Japan they had the finale of their 10th anniversary tour in Yokohama. It was streamed live for those of us who can't drop everything and travel nine time zones for a concert (but are willing to stay up all night). In the next few months expect some excerpt to start showing up on their channel. They are the real deal. Here's my suggestion: *"from now on"*
I 100% think I will grow to like them more and more. They really surprised me tbh. Looking forward to some more songs.
@melvinthinks this kinda freaked me out my brother's name is Melvin along with my father be well
Doubt they're as short as me though 😬
Band Maid should be a joke, dressing up in maid's outfits! But they're not, because the joke is something that they're sharing with the audience, and - as you have so rightly observed - they're all top notch musicians who know how to rock.
And FWIW the bass player enjoys the nickname of 'The Barefoot Assassin.'
Barefoot Assassin?!? 🤣😀🤣 Love it 😁
Best comment right here!
Hej Melvin ! Welcome to the world of Band-Maid.
Glad to have you with us on this journey !
Thanks dude! 🤟👍😀
A great song and performance from Band-Maid, and keep in mind this is the 22nd song of a 23 song set, 2 and a half hours long! Amazing energy! Last night they performed at the Yokohama Arena and that show was 3 and a half hour epic performance! If you want some cow bell from these ladies, check out "Chemical Reaction"! Band-Maid opened for Guns and Roses when they toured Japan, btw!
Wowser! They put a shift in that's for sure 😄
I started my musical journey in life with Guns'n'Roses. I went through different phases, going into grunge->thrash and groove metal->extreme metal, and 35 years later I closed the circle when I discovered these amazing 5 women from Japan. They reignited my first love for hard rock and yes, I am drawing major parallels to Slash in Kanami's lead guitar playing. You are going to love this band. I wasn't sold on the vocals either in the beginning, but the instrumentation was just too good. Now I love the vocals, especially the vocal harmonies. I am a sucker for those.
For the next song I would recommend Dice, especially the Dice & Hate combo, live from Lollapalooza. You will find the Hulu live recording here on TH-cam. There is a very tasty guitar & bass battle happening there.
My rock/metal days go all the way back to Led Zepplin and Deep Purple, Black Sabath and the like. I had been severely depressed over what had become of recent music until I heard these women!!! My God what an awakening and now every time I hear them I break out in a smile that lasts the rest of my day! Long Live Band Maid!!!
We've got a similar musical evolution tbh. Except I also go into Indie/Britpop and a lot of garage rock through the 90/2000s. I'm looking forward to this journey and rabbit hole and I think your predictions will probably be true 😁
Best band in the world 🎎🤘🎎🤘
Heard maybe a dozen or so songs from them so far, and I have to agree, they're more rock than metal. But, whatever you call them, they ARE talented. Nice drum and guitar solos by Akane and Kanami here. Though the highlight of their music, for me, is usually Misa's bass.
I bet Misa and her bass arent from this planet
All round they are solid musicians 🤟
Well last year guns and roses closed for band maid so there you have it the living legends known as band maid best rock band on the planet right now
Have a listen to Rinne, Onset, From Now On, Choose Me, Hate, Dice, Puzzle then every other song they have recorded….they are their own genre.
Cheers!
@@melvinthinks generally go for official lives but I particularly live the Rinne MV. Hate and Dice at Lollapalooza festival is good fun though I always feel that this kind of music in bright, hot, sunshine doesn’t seem quite right :)
Actually, From Now On MV also worth seeking out, simple but classic :)
Hi Melvin from a damp Staffordshire! Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 57 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive 10 year back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. This is a mid tempo track by their standards. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and bad-ass musicians to boot. They are currently celebrating their 10th anniversary with the original line up. I went to Japan and saw them at four servings last month. They killed it every time!
They played with Guns and Roses once. They blew them out of the water.
Bloody awful weather in London it is....And Special Brew is only 8% now. Gloomy indeed :(
Hey Davey - I'm super intrigued by this band and your comment has made me even more so 😁 I definitely wanna hear some of their other stuff to see what they have on offer so watch this space. Cheers dude!
@@melvinthinks Could i suggest then (on kawaii Davey's behalf) "Don't You Tell Me", preferably live at Zepp, 2018 with an awesome lead/bass conversation breakdown. If not the MV is still great just not as awesome :)
Welcome to the fandom! Best rock band in the world right now!
Thank you 🙏
Did anyone mention how awesome BAND-MAID are yet? Cos if the Maidiacs haven't then i'm saying it now.😁👌
Not only are they Awesome. I've picked my 30 songs for concert part 2. And it may be better than concert part 1. That is not easy to do for any band. 🎸🥁🎤
@@jkkansasband7056 Well they already played my song & i also called the Lollapalooza "Hate" part 2. But i'd love to help you & the Maids pick the next set list.😁
@rogerchance9074 Roger, man of few words. Tell me in 4 words what you thought of the Yokohama Okyuji?
@rogerchance9074 Good enough for me. Kanpai.😁🍻
I have not seen anyone ... you are FIRST!!! :p
Funny enough last year after their US tour they went back to Japan to open for guns n roses and I preferred them more lol. As you delve into them you will hear acdc influence, U2 influence. Many influences done in their own was.
I especially hear the influence of Carlos Santana in Kanami's guitar solos!
I hope I don't hear U2 influences! 🤣😁🤣
MISA! MISA! MISA!
Holding the line in Solid Guitar Rock, Band Maid has picked up the Mantel of Rock'n'Roll where the West has left it behind!
More Band Maid Always!!
Put your Kitsune UP!! Po!
Drum solo? Check the song Freedom from the same concert.
Thank you brother for reacting to Band-Maid. Greatly appreciate your review and reaction.
You're most welcome, dude. It was a pleasure making it 😀🤟👍
Cool reaction. Go ahead and rewind more when you're commenting on something. It's fun to hear what you've got to say. Yep, definitely not metal. I think of them as punk (and metal) influenced hard rock with pop vocals. A modern fusion. Maybe progressive rock? For me, the vocals are best in some of their more complex arrangements where they serve as something like additional instruments (Blooming or Black Hole). But Saiki is so good, I've come to enjoy her voice in nearly all the songs. If you're a guitar fan, check out From Now On.
Awesomeness! Thank you 🙏 😊
His sacred holiness TinyHat-san welcomes you to the Unseen World that leads to World Domination. (You'll understand later)
Should I be scared?!? 😁
Their music varies greatly, but always with that hard rock base! You want a super heavy riff and drums? Try _'Rinne'_
Me likes HEAVY! 😀
“Hard rock fusion” is how I describe it. It’s a battle royale cage match between metal, hard rock, punk and progressive rock with pop as the referee.
“DICE” official music video would be my next suggestion. The Guns & Roses elements should be more prominent for you with that one 🤘🏽
As much as I love the Dice MV, which is the one that assimilated me, I think Dice and Hate? live at Lollapalooza might reel him all the way into the Band-Maid boat. Of course, reacting to all of them would not be a problem at all.
@@saikisfang9339 I hear ya, but the camera work on that video is so bad, it misses the bass and guitar solos completely. That’s the reason I never recommend the Lolla show, (in my opinion anyways)
@@MusicMike747 I suspect the camera people were not prepared for Band-Maid live. We are lucky we didn't get a whole lot shots of shoes, clouds, and birds. Hopefully we will get the Yokohama version as an official live video.
And GnR are one of my top 5 bands of all time so it's gotta go on the list 😁🤟👍
@@melvinthinks Band-Maid opened for GNR in Japan recently.
They opened for Gun and Roses during their recent Japanese tour
Welcome to the world of Band-Maid. Only 130+ songs to go.
Hahahaha! Let's me me a full time reactor and I might be able to cover them all one day! 😊
Well, king gizzard and the lizard wizard started at the same time as Band-Maid and have 25 studio albums (strongly suggest looking them up, but they are famous for exploring multiple genres, so the album you pick you might not like but the next one you will) but Band-Maid is (imo) the next BEST hard rock band since decades ago. They are soooooo good.
Gizzard is pretty great and I've barely scratched the surface of their discography.
Great recommendation - I need some more Aussie music on my channel.
Maidiac checking in. Welcome to the wonderful world of Band-Maid. Strap in for a wild ride. They're best live, but don't do their mv's like blooming a misservice.
Cheers! 🙏
Thank you Melvin! That was fun! You have been awarded 3 points! There is no scale and you can't use them for anything but I like to award them anyway to show my appreciation.
Hahaha! I'll take 3 points 😁👍
If you're interested, the CCs are in English.
If you don't care for the vocals, no problem, check out their songs "from now on" or "Without Holding Back". If you like guitar, you'll be amazed at those two tracks.
You forgot "Onset" 😂
I don't hate the vocals - I just prefer a different style 😁
Congratulations on discovering the best band in the world today! Enjoy the ride!! 🎶🎸🥁🎸🎶🔥🙂🕊
Thanks so much!!
Band-Maid has a sly sense of humor: the maid outfits (they call them their battle armor) are the first clue. The band has a full set of running gags: for example, the rhythm player identifies as a pigeon and ends nearly every sentence with "PO!" mimicking a pigeon. When asked what goals the band has set for itself, she tells interviewers, "World Domination! Po!" For an April Fools joke they changed the band name to Band-Maiko, donned Geisha kimono and makeup, and re-released five of their songs as Japanese Folk-Metal with the lyrics re-written in the traditional Kyoto dialect of the Geisha. The two videos from this gag are visually stunning and beautiful in every sense. Both videos are chock full of Easter eggs for which only their fans will get the joke.
Genre wise, Band-Maid is a Pop-Prog-Metal band that dips into classic rock, punk, metal, pop, prog, jazz, rap, Broadway, Folk-metal, and whatever floats their imaginations. They write themes for popular Anime, the latest being "Shambles" for *Kengan Asuri.* They compose and produce their own music. Rhythm Guit. Miku Kobato writes most of the lyrics, while primary vocalist Saiki Atsumi also writes and collaborates with Miku. Everyone contributes in the songwriting process and most of them are multi-instrumentalists. Kanami and Misa have played piano since they were toddlers.
You can readily hear GnR and AC/DC as obvious influences, but band member admit to variety of influences. Lead guitar and composition lead Kanami Tono is a fangirl for Carlos Santana and Larry Carlton. Bassist Misa likes Hendrix and Smashing Pumpkins. Drummer Akane Hirose likes Deep Purple and Japanese hardcore band Maximum The Hormone. there is no harder working band than these ladies: they push each other, set stretch goals, and you can tell that each of them have developed into top level musicians and vocalists over their ten years together as a band. They have a deep catalog of music, well over 120 songs, and their output is phenomenal. They don't write any bad songs.
They performed at Lollapalooza 2023 and you can still probably catch their hour long set on YT. They burned the stage to the ground and you need to see their performance of "Dice - HATE?" with an amazing bass-guitar duel.

Do you mean the concert that was 3.5 hours long where they played 33 songs? That is the one I have been listening to all day at work today.
Thanks Melvin. Glad to see you practicing your response. I'm horse for three days after any Band Maid show. They really want the crowd to know their songs and sound off.
Their fanbase seem really cool from all the responses I've had so far. Really welcoming, knowledgeable and warm 🤟
Good comments. I think their music is what rock could have been if it kept changing and evolving. They have elements of the whole range from pop, blues, punk, jazz, metal, prog. But always hard rock as a base. As for the vocals being poppy, a strongly melodic vocal line used to be a mainstay of rock in early days. When did that become a bad thing?
Definitely not a bad thing and I'm a sucker for it. I need to hear more of their tracks to form a stronger opinion on the vocals tbh.
@@melvinthinksGood idea. Maybe one of their more recent songs? Latest is Shambles. Or a clip of HATE from their recent Lollapalooza 2023 gig. Then something from their early years, Alone, or YOLO.
Welcome to the world of Band-Maid!!!😀
Congratulations on finding the band many of us Masters & Princesses believe is the best on planet earth 🌍 today!! 🔥
Welcome to the Pigeon the Hole that is Band-Maid!! 🕊😂
In fact, your life has just taken a step in an incredibly positive direction by finding Band-Maid! 😀
They are a remarkable collection of five incredible musicians and performers that know few genre limitations and always put a smile on the faces of their audience when performing a “Service”.
They have 100+ fantastic songs and should be playing stadiums all over the world, imho. Any one song, as great as it may be, like “Domination” are but the tip of the tip of the tip of a distant gleaming iceberg of excellence!
There are a lot of us older Masters & Princesses who grew up with bands The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Santana, YES, RUSH, AC/DC, Metallica, Guns N Roses, The Who, U2, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, (& others) who have become Maidiacs because we find many of the same qualities in Band-Maid’s music we found in such giants of the Classic Rock era. As have many younger people from the grunge, alternative, independent and pop-punk eras. Band-Maid members have influences across the music spectrum including Alternative, Classic Rock, Pop-Rock, Post-Grunge, Metal, Punk, Punk-Pop, Pop, even classical musical training, and the influences of many great Japanese rock bands and pop acts.
Yet, Band-Maid succeeds in creating a genre all of their OWN!! Stay with the journey and I’m sure you’ll agree. You’ll stop comparing them to anyone else as you’ll see no comparisons are useful. The Maids are the trailblazers not following in any particular footprints but all over the rock spectrum.
They have great MV’s, both studio and live, on their official channel.
A typical recommendation, as others will say, are two must watch official live videos from their January 9, 2023 concert
- “No God” - official live video
- “Puzzle” - official live video
Then watch:
- “Real Existence” - official live video (2014)
- “Freedom”- official live video (2016)
- “Onset” - official live video (2017), instrumental magic
- “Play” - official live video (2018)
Then I recommend you jump several years forward to some newer songs to see how they’ve developed since then. They’ve grown in every aspect over their years.
This band does not stand still!!!
They released the new “Unleash” EP in September 2022 and have three recent MVs, including
- “Influencer” - official MV
- “Unleash!!!!!” - official MV
- “From Now On- official MV, more instrumental magic!
On February 21, 2023, they released their song “Memorable” - official MV, and it’s a love letter tho their fans who supported them on their 2022 tour, the first after the Covid19 pandemic.
I think you’ll like them and be blown away by their evolving talents in composition, arrangement, instrumentation, orchestration, playing, performance and all around joy 🤩
Then dozens more songs - everything is good and many are great!
Try
- “Dice” - official MV
- “Choose Me” - official MV
- “After Life” - official MV
- “Manners” - official MV
- “Manners / Black Hole” - official live video
- “Sayonkadori” - official acoustic live video - sublimely beautiful
- “Puzzle” Acoustic - official live
- “Daydreaming” - official MV
- “Warning” - official MV
- “Rinne” - official MV
- “The Dragon Cries” - official MV (all English lyrics & vocals)
Two songs are Anime Theme songs - talk about high ENERGY!
- “Sense” - official MV
- “Different” - official MV
- “Shambles” - official MV (their latest song release - and it’s heavy!)
And the essential song to understand the beginning lore of the band,
- “THRILL- official MV - went viral, saved the band from being dropped, and started them on their path to world domination!!
Hopefully, they come somewhere near you in the not too distant future and you’ll have a blast if you go see them!
The list of great songs goes on and on and on…I’d stick to the official videos until you get a fuller understanding and appreciation for the band before diving into the fan videos - the sound quality is lacking on many of them so they’d color your perception of their abilities and performance skills.
And know that one thing about this band is that there are the dozens & dozens of songs without videos that are every bit as good, or better, as those that do. Examples to pull up are:
- I’ll
- Hibana
- Corallium
- Moratorium
- Why, Why, Why
- Page
- Take Me Higher
- Flying High
And then there’s their arch enemies “Band-Maiko” 😂 You should watch:
- “Secret Maiko Lips”
- “Gion-Cho”

Great reaction Melvin!!!! So good I decided to subscribe with you. Band Maid is in my opinion, the best rock/metal band today. For further taste of what they are today, listen to the official BM music video "Manners" followed by an incredibly intricate piece called "Black Hole." These two will show you how skilled they are today and You have got to give it up for that marvelous voice that is Saiki's!

If you like different instruments playing off one another during songs you are going to love this band. Usually it's Kanami (Lead Guitar) and Misa (Bass), but Akane (Drums) and Miku (Vocals/Guitar) often have a place in these moments. Welcome to the wonderful world of Band-Maid. Don't worry there are plenty of metal edged, hard rock songs, to choose from. Try Rinne (Music Video), Unleash!!!!! (Music Video), Black Hole (Official Live Video) or No God (Official Live Video).
Lovely jubbly. Cheers Graham 👍🤟🙏
They consider themselves a 'hard rocking maid band' but have influences from metal to pop-punk, with some prog and funk stirred in. A good example of their range can be found in the Manners/Black Hole double live serving, which starts as pure groove and finishes as screaming metal.
Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band.
Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed.
Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors from Tokyo University.
Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Frequently snacks between songs.
MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls.
Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).
Love this thanks Glenn! 👍😁 Really helpful - especially so I same their names correctly
They can go from acoustic mellow tunes to hard metal like
They opened for GNR in Japan.
So I've heard😁
Band-Maid = Joy in the form of awesome rock music.
Their latest Album and EP is a lot more progressive.
The band recently opened for Guns and Roses in Japan.
Never heard Akane described as having bunny feet before, but kind of fitting since she worked her tail off for that skill.
Melvin, weirdly, Guns n Roses asked Band Maid to open a show for them , as they liked them , and knew it would boost ticket sales for the show, which it did, there is footage of this on you tube, or was. S you listen to more BM you will realise is an amazing vocalist , which puts them head and shoulders above most Japanese acts. And yes they are all great players. In fact Jimmy Page went to see them while he was in Tokyo, asked to meet the drummer, had a pic taken with her, and told Akane she was the reincarnation of John Bonham, to which Akane replied.." Thank you so muck Page-san. I will do my best to improve my playing.'". it is well worth checking out Freedom, for her drum solo. > th-cam.com/video/FHpuEqMAcDg/w-d-xo.html
Jimmy Paige , never told Akane she was the reincarnation of John Bonham , stop spreading that lie .
That's pretty cool!

Funny how sometimes you'll hear a song or a band and you'll be like, "not really what I'm into, but it's definitely good." Then you hear it a few more times along with a couple more tracks and suddenly it's, "Holy crap. This is some serious stuff." So many bands i loved in the past came to me that way and Band-Maid is no different. Their latest single "Shambles" is a real banger to check out. Oh and they're currently at eight albums of new music. Wikipedia needs an update.
I think this is way I'm going tbh! The chorus is still in my head and I recorded this video over a week ago!
New sub here. I think your playful attitude is a great match with BandMaid's whimsy. They love to have fun. They love to play Rock and Roll. They love each other and hang out together. They love the fans. We know this because they've written songs expressing their love for the fans. The Maidiacs love them. Great group of fans form a community based on our love for the music and the Maids! ❤
Thanks the sub, Chris 😀 My reaction videos are all about listening to some great new music, rocking out, having a laugh, and not taking things too seriously. So me and Band-Maid could be a match made in heaven 😁
They are a hard rock band that fuses in different elements of metal, punk, prog and pop elements. If you want to see them more in metal mode Rinne mv or Moratorium live are good songs. If you want more Japanese metal it is a deep well. Highly suggest Nemophila-Zen live and Hanabie-Be The Gal, Early Summer Edition mv.
Thanks! 👍
Welcome to Band-Maid. This band is currently at the top of my list of bands I want to see live. Yes, more Rock than Metal but sooo good. Drums, bass and guitar are all top notch. Their songs have made me laugh (band-maiko), cry (about us) and just rocking the f out.
Cheers dude. Am really looking forward to hearing some more. I love all types of guitar based music, so the fact they are more hard rock Vs metal is cool with me 😎
They actually opened up for Guns N’ Roses a couple years ago. If I was a band, I would not go on after them.
Wonder if Axl got on stage on time 😜
Some have mentioned them opening up for GnR....
But the link between them is closer than that.
I follow Justin Hawkins of The Darkness on YT. He did check out their song "Dice", and looked upon the song as a mix of "You could be mine" GNR and "Big gun" of AC/DC.
You can check out his review after either checking out their MV or their DICE/Hate? combo from Loolapaloosa this year. Absoulutely 100% pure fun and music excellence.. sound 60%... Thank u Hulu!
I love Justin and You Could Be Mine is one of the best GnR track imo! I'm sold on Dice already and I haven't even heard it yet 😊
I know that look , welcome to the band of maids , down the pigeon hole u go , po!
Heheheheh
You kept mentioning Guns n' Rose's so fun fact: Band-Maid opened for them when they performed in Japan. This is but one song in their catalog so if you dive deeper into the rabbit hole, you'll find more jems. Dice + Hate is a must watch as is Sense, No God, and Different for you.
I felt like you were taking the piss for a minute. You got it by the end though. Maids playing hard rock, it can't be for everyone but put respect on them regardless. These ladies rock. Good reaction I guess. Do more if you want.
Thanks for the comment. I guess 😜 I'll definitely be doing another track. Am intrigued by them and the comments I've had have been really helpful.
Check out the live at Lollapalooza dice and hate combo.
Band Maid mixes and matches genre at will. Sometimes have 4 or 5 different styles in one song. You will also come to notice at they will often have enough different riffs, tempos and styles in one song for a dozen songs. Their battle armour is going to undergo some small changes this year . No worries tho the changes are not that drastic from the photos I have seen.
Oooohhh. That will be cool. Like Slipknot 😜
Band Maid has never characterized themselves as a "metal band" (although some of their songs are metal-influenced, in whole or in part). Their founder has labeled them as "an incredibly hard-ROCKING band" -- a fairly accurate description. This descriptive dichotomy is reminiscent of Lemmy's arguments over the years that Motorhead was "a ROCK band that plays incredibly loudly", not a metal band. Lemmy's protestations were largely ignored, as Band Maid's have been. So why a metal label for Band Maid? Before Band Maid's 2013 conception, a number of all-female Japanese hard rock/metal bands had hit the scene and become reasonably successful (starting with Show-Ya, with Destrose following, then Aldious, Mary's Blood and Galmet [plus several other such bands with less notoriety). Babymetal first gained their independence in the same year Band Maid got their recording contract -- 2013. So, we have a small slew of relatively new all-female hard rock/metal bands coming on-board in Japan, with a growing fanbase. Band Maid is Japanese, all-female, and plays a goodly amount of hard rock. Promoters, media distributors and retail outlets asked themselves: "How should we market them? Hey let's call them a metal band and market them with the rest of the up-and-coming groups". So -- to these people at least -- Band Maid, like Motorhead, is often labeled as a metal band to this day.
For the most part, Band Maid is not essentially "poppy". In your mind (or otherwise) separate the vocals from a song like "Domination", and the music may suddenly seem noticeably heavier to you. The vocals "lighten" the song. (This IS NOT a shot at Saiki and Miku: I love them both, and I could not even deal with the thought of them leaving Band Maid [shudder])!
So why the simple, English-language choruses, for call-and-response with the audience? There are several logical reasons for this, but one looms preeminent. Almost from the beginning, Band Maid wanted to court the world as its audience. Unfortunately, none of them spoke much English. How do they involve the crowd? Well, they do speak some English, and (for the moment, at least), English remains the language of finance, commerce and power; as such, it is commonly taught in the schools of many countries, including most European states, China and, well, Japan.
Simple English call and response is the means by which this bond is formed; it should work even in Japan, where English and its uses are a part of most years of almost everyone's scholastic experience. (Each member of Band Maid has a noticeably better command of English in 2023 than they did in 2013, and virtually all of the Pony Canyon-era videos (and several others) have subtitles).
You responded to LoveBites Nemophila BAND-MAID, but the next song I recommend is "MindSet" by Gacharic Spin. I can't think of a better song
Thanks for tip off 👍
When Guns & Roses played in Japan last year Band-Maid opened for them, and yeah they're more a rock band than a metal band but they incorporate elements from metal, hard rock, prog, punk and just about every sub-genre you can think of.
That's always a good thing to my ears 😊
Yes, they are more pop/rock than metal. But ... not always.
MISA MISA MISA!!!!! yeah a lot of people aren't into the clean Melodic (ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to call them that P word) vocals but it's part of Band-Maid so either get used to them or Stop but Good re-action and thanx.
Cheers David. And the P word isn't a bad thing. Not when it's done this well 😬
@melvinthinks have to agree to disagree. The modern use of POP is for the Genre with fake music and auto tuned singing. I don't even use the term Pop Punk I use the original term Neo (New) Punk.
Band Maid opened a few shows for Guns n Roses in Japan last year
So I've heard 😬
Hey Melvin, welcome! Keep 'em coming, and as you go through some of their songs you'll quickly realize that they a very porous set of boundaries when it comes to genres, but you'll never mistake Band-Maid for anything other than Band-Maid. Domination is a pretty great slab o' hard rock, but they do ballads, more straight-up punk influenced songs, acoustic stuff, instrumentals, very layered songs with a prog flavor, etc. One thing you will NOT experience is a lack of catchy hooks and riffs. If you want a good contrast, I'd suggest reacting to either Dice+Hate from their recent concert at Lallopalooza (just search it on YT); or their two-song live of Manners and Black Hole (available on their official site).
Cool! Thanks Phil I'll add them to my list 👍
What you saw was just the tip of a huge iceberg.
They have a variety of musical styles.
So, three songs that don't have a GNR or POP feel.
My recommendations are FromNowOn, Onset live and WithoutHoldingBack.
The reason I recommend these three songs is that they have a different slant and focus on instrumental performances, which are great for getting to know their wide range of musicality.
BAND-MAID is a group of top-notch musicians who are tight, powerful, have great playing skills, and have a lot of fun.
Enjoy!
Awesome! Thanks 😊👍
It’s funny how you mentioned Guns And Roses so much. Earlier this year they opened for GNR which is a cruel joke, IMO, as they musically kick GNR’s ass. Popularity of course, is what it is… GNR had such great musical promise and they squandered it in a major way. Been primarily living off their first couple albums for 30 years. Band Maid doesn’t waste time, or squander their talent. They just keep getting better. Watch “Dice & Hate? at Lollapalooza” to see live rock jamming at its best.
Facts!!!!!! 🕊
First three GnR albums are classics, but after that (perhaps Lies EP) I'm not interested as it's just Axl self indulging.
The man's not wrong about wasting time and talent. JBI was released in early 2016 which means the song writing was done in 2015 between then and now 2023 they've written 109 songs (Alone is included as well as Brightest Star / Magie) Which works out to roughly 1 song a month or more specifically 1 song every 24 days. If you include their 3 earlier albums (which although given to them they still had a hand in crafting) plus certain songs excluded on later albums like Smile ect... It pushes to 140+ songs and a new song about every 19 days.
And IMO on a scale of 1 to 10, no song dropping below a 7 in excellence. With about 90% being 10's but not all 10's are created equal, some 10's are better than others, if you can dig what I'm saying.
Which is due to the variety of styles that their music encompasses. If you ask any Maidiac what their favorite 10 songs are the answer will usually be some sort of rotating list that goes about 47 songs deep. And if you ask what their Favorite song is, the answer is usually, whatever song they last listened to by Band-Maid was
2 poppy ??? ehh.. go sniffle a bit to Black hole, Rinne, Giovanni, Warning, No God... just to meantion some of the more heavy ones, with Black hole probably the heaviest, and just to end it off, you should listen to "from now on" a instrumental with them :D Where they let the instruments sing the song.
Though BAND-MAID consider themselves to be Hard Rock, they are no respecters of genres, but Metal is among their many influences. If you want some BAND-MAID songs that are more like Metal you should try 'Different', 'Black Hole' or 'Rinne', or even their latest anime commission, 'Shambles' which is very heavy indeed! But they do it all, and sometime even mix genres within the same song. BTW, Lead Singer, Saiki's name is pronounced more like (Sigh-Key) with a long i, than Say-Ki. Think Psyche. On the "Hellos" it's 3 the first time and 4 the second. You'll get it.
Thanks for the recommendations and corrections - all good to know ☺️
Live is where these incredible women really shine. As you can actually see in this performance. But don't shortchange their music videos. Go back to the beginning if you're going to continue to react to them. And start with thrill, real existence alone daydreaming and bubble. Thrill is the first music video they put out I think in 2014. It has a special place in the hearts of many of us. Thrill for many of us was our first exposure to this incredible group. Also you get to see how they have progressed from back then to today. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the kind words, and for sure - I definitely want to see what their MVs are like based on their live performance. Am sure it will be interesting and full of surprises 😄
Thrill is where I started my Band-Maid journey and now I hardly listen to any other band. I have fallen down the pigeon hole completely.
We won another madiac guys! I hope you enjoy the rabbit hole, po! ♥
I think you are right 😬 Buckle up and enjoy the ride 🤟🤟🤟
Hi from France:
Curiously, since its creation (10 years already) Band Maid plays and sounds like a great group in the current rock world... What's its name again? Ah yes: BAND MAID!!! Really curious coincidence...
And comparing Akane to Slash... It's not nice for Akane... 🤣🤣🤣
yes because Akane is the drummer , Kanami is the lead guitar .
Slash is one of my favourite guitarists of all time 😬
I think it is 3 and then 4 hello
I finally got it after I'd edited the video! Lol
@@melvinthinks The audience in Japan is awesome. They know those things and can participate in the songs totally perfect.
Not sure about the vocals? Try an instrumental: FROM NOW ON (OMV).
Want something heavier? Try WARNING (OMV).
Cheers Greg. I think the vocals will grow on me.
They are rock not hard rock and certainly not metal but once you accept that you can really appreciate them as the best rock band in the world because they are and ofcourse they have acoustic versions to some of their songs as well
. Live clips as you can see here are on another level. They performed at Yokohama arena only a few days ago and did 33 songs taking some 3 hours or so.
Now if you do want something harder and heavier ( in some cases much heavier) try the other all girl Japanese band NEMOPHILA. Start with Rise because that is fairly typical of their music but they have heavier tracks like Zen as well as lighter songs that are high energy and fun like CHANGE THE WORLD. They are also renowned for their covers and they have heaps of them. My favourites are LOVEBITES and SHIMI. but they have covered BABYMETAL METALLICA ACDC SKIDROW and the list goes on. Amazingly the drummer has 2 young children and the singer has just had a baby. They actually toured America while she was very pregnant and made a film.clip.
🇦🇺 Australia is watching 👀
Hey Stephen I did Nemophila a little while ago and LOVED them. Definitely gonna do some more. I've also got x3 Lovebites videos floating about so check those out if you get bored 😜
Good Reaction but you're wrong on the POP comment but I wont hold that against you😉Yes they can play pop but they have No Genre..Many fans in fact will tell you Band Maids Genre is just that BAND MAID.. Once you go down that Rabbit Hole with them there is no escaping. I am 2+ years into that hole and I love being stuck with them..Moratorium,Black Hole,Play,Warning just to get started...see ya on the other side...Maidiacs Unite!!!!
Pop isn't a bad thing 😬 It's commercial and catchy. Which is what's sells a lot of records. I've had the song in my head for days since. I really like it. And definitely wanna do some more to see what they have to offer. Have read a lot of good things in the comments from the 'Maidiacs', including yourself. Really nice, warming, and welcoming fanbase. 👍
I am so happy that Band Maid is NOT like Guns and Roses ... epecially concerning their vocals ... I never liked GnR because of the vocals (same with Bon Jovi or Aerosmith).
But i love band maid. Silly, isn't it? I like their hard rocking and driving positive music, their musicianship and that they write their own songs (very important to me).
Some things connect with people, and sometimes they don't. It's the great thing about music as it means different things to different people. Good and bad.
It's not guys, it's Women. lol They're all about 30 give or take a few years. Listen to "From Now on" by BAND-MAID. That might change your mind.
That's probably next on my list tbh. Have heard good things about this track 👍
Band maid member are very taltented muscians, this song is not their most rock song, listen shamble or black hole, you will be surprised
Gun n roses sucks these days😂
Sadly, that's the softest entry for reactors. If you want metal, you'll have it, just don't follow the path proThis one is poppy in a way. But they're beasts & you can be gobsmacked if you follow the hard path. All genres, their genre. Yet this one is not so challenging to the ears. Give it another go !
100% I'll be doing some more so watch this space 😀
Band maid is hard rock .they are not metal...
I've heard they're quite eclectic from the comments I've read so far. Let's see what happens on my journey with this band 😁
