    Hey guys! We are back on Enigma's Cold War Server this time back in the Mi-8 Hip. I haven't flown this module or even much of DCS in the past year so I've spent a few days getting back into it offline. After some re-familiarization offline, it's time to take this show online to my favorite server! In this video we'll do three troop landings while we feel out the helicopter and take a look at some of the things that have been added to Enigma's Cold War Server over the past year. I'm excited to be back in DCS. Thanks for watching!

    I prefer the Hind, in anything BUT Enigma's server. The amount of damage you can deal with troops, rockets, guns, and door gunners really kind of outweighs the guided missiles of the Hind. But this really really exemplifies just how great the aircraft are in DCS, and how absolutely atrocious the ground environment is. It's still a lot of fun. But the lack of any real battle between your troops and the auto destruct emplacement, the silly appearing and disappearing troops from 2002, and the impossibly accurate aiming of AI ground forces makes enjoying helicopters in anything but Enigma a real challenge. And even then, I don't know why I bother with rockets on the Hip when you can hide behind trees and let your troops auto blast the enemy forces rather than take super accurate shots to your engines from a mile out. Either way, great video. I really enjoy the cheeky nature of flying around a shot up helicopter with no wheels to do two more attacks.

    • @ryu1940
      @ryu1940  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yeah the ground game really needs work. There is so much to be improved. But like you said it’s still possible to have fun and I’m enjoying it.

    In in our next iteration we will have troop deployment be manual instead of automatic to help avoid accidentally deploying squads. I originally programmed it like that to avoid F10 menu clutter and simplify workflow but I think a deploy button is probably fine now

    • @ryu1940
      @ryu1940  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do like how it is integrated now with the option to turn on and off automatic drops. How would a deploy button work ? Would that go through the radio menu or would it be something you could keybind? Awesome insight thanks for that!

    • @yinkism
      @yinkism ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ryu1940 it would be so sick if we could keybind stuff like that, keybinding recon would be my dream. Maybe I'll implement the same kind of system but add the option to manually drop if you have the auto deploy turned off, best of both worlds

    • @ryu1940
      @ryu1940  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@yinkism yeah that sounds like a good way forward. I really do love the auto drop because when you’re coming in hot and need to get troops out quickly it is a life saver. Trying to go through the menus rapidly is a little difficult in a short time span measured in seconds. Honestly it’s really good and little hiccups happen so it’s no sweat off my back if the drop gets triggered accidentally. Now I’ve learned to just switch it to manual to lock it essentially and “arm” it by switching to automatic before doing the next attack.
      My hats off to you, you’ve done some great work!

    • @ryu1940
      @ryu1940  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ttenor12 that’s my order as well. I feel most at home and comfortable handling the Huey but the Hip and Hind are my favorites at the moment. On ECW it takes some time to learn what works for survival but generally the major ones I try to always follow: stay under treetop height if possible, always have a backdrop to help you blend in, change course after a near flyby of an enemy jet, and always stay fast.

    • @ttenor12
      @ttenor12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for the feedback on the color corrections. I’m also not a fan of the bright over saturated look so I like to desaturate and tone down the colors when I make these videos now.

    The HIP is great.
    Might want to lighten it up a bit for speed and agility, you'll be massively overweight with all pylons full, gunners and troops.
    Maybe empty to 50% fuel on startup... probably still overweight but less so.

      You can open a .trk file in the mission editor. From there under a section called mission options you can change it to show external views. After that you save it and just reopen it in the replay viewer. I hope that helps.

    prefer the Hip and i have the Hind.
    the weapons load out on the Hip, i find more of a hinderance than a help. i fly with just the door gunners. troop drops can be a pain, especially if you have to find the positions yourself. i generally start by looking at how many CSAR missions there are, then decide what to do. if there are more than 5 CSAR and no recon, i feel i can more for Red picking up downed pilots. the Ark 9 radio direction finder is more than a bit wonky, and can be a headache.
    could you do a video on CSAR and the Ark 9?
    FYI i use the Overlord text bot, it gives a heads up.

    • @ryu1940
      @ryu1940  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can try to incorporate that in a future video if the opportunity presents itself. Typically I shy away from a dedicated CSAR now and it ends up being based on luck if I run over them enroute.

    As someone who's looking to buy the Hip during the lunar new years sale, what exactly is the difference in DCS between it and the Hind? If something seems like common sense please include it anyway

    • @ryu1940
      @ryu1940  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Mi-8 Hip is primarily a transport utility type helicopter. The Hind, while it has the capability to transport a smaller number of troops, it is often regarded (rightfully so) as an attack helicopter gunship. The Hip has no anti tank guided missile capability unlike the Hind which can carry up to 8 IIRC. The Hip is slightly slower than the Hind but it is faster than other helicopters like the Huey (and possibly the Gazelle IIRC). In terms of cockpit layout, the Hind and Hip are worlds apart. The Hip usually has 3 crew members sitting side by side inside a wide cockpit while the Hind has two crew members who each sit in their own segmented off bubble cockpit. The gunner sits up front and the pilot of the Hind sits in the back. When it comes to handling they both require a little more finesse than the Huey but it isn't impossible to handle well over time. I hope that helps! The Hip is an excellent helicopter and I definitely recommend it especially on sale if you are interested in it.

      @ryu1940 Alright thanks, I already own the Hind from when it first released and have always been a more logistically minded helo pilot despite primarily doing fixed wing aircraft. How much of an impact does 1 Hip dropping troops for a few hours have on the server?

    • @ryu1940
      @ryu1940  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you’re successful it can be significant. Each frontline has between 10-20 encampments with 6 - 8 ground vehicles each iirc and the Hip can wipe out an entire encampment with one go. Each side has 1000 HP and the frontline makes up 50% of that score. My guess is each frontline vehicle makes up 3-5 HP and the minimum frontline movement threshold is 5% variance over the other side so it’s entirely doable for a Hip to impact that and cause the frontline to move. Granted, the score also takes in to account a few other things like industrial targets as well as aircraft attrition. The FAQ for the server details how the front moves if you wanted to know more.
