He didn’t want to end it with chapter black he wanted a war arc that would end with king enma as the main villain but was forced to write a tournament arc
The final villain of Yu Yu Hakusho was Yomi. However, unlike previous villains who pretty much had to be defeated out right, it was the opposite. Yomi represented Yusuke's worry about fighting consuming him and Kurama's struggle with his demon side and the possibility of losing his compassion that had been building since he'd started fighting demons again during the Black Tournament. What was needed from Yusuke and Kurama was not to defeat Yomi outright but to keep their humanity intact while trying to confront him. Hiei had his own side plot involving coming to terms with his past which was why his foil was Mukuro whose own past was haunted by trauma.
@@razkableDefinitely. Chapter Black is one of those sagas that get better with repeat viewings. I'm gonna be honest: I think chapter black is the best story that Togashi has written, yes even better than the CA saga. The latter feels like it pulled far too much from chapter black imo.
When you look back before 2011 many people knew Yu Yu Hukasho than Hunter x Hunter I feel like why Hunter x Hunter got more attention was because of the remake .
10/10 anime My number 1 I watched it as a kid toonami and always thought it was Yu Yu Hockey Show haha so when I went to my friends house and he had it on I asked what it was cos I remember seeing the spirit gun and when he said the name I was like whaaaaat!? So I rewatched it all as an adult and it's the best fuckin shonen of all time, sorry Goku. I did an abridged dub of the first episode I had to break it into 3 parts it's pretty funny y'all should check it out or something
My favorite few aspects about yyh are how keiko is used to be important for the narrative in 6 different occasions...that's rare to see from a love interest in shounen manga...second how we learn things retroactively later on like hiei backstory why demons are allowed to come to human world and how spirit world operates among other things like how sensui and toguro planned things out...some things are not explained up front so the show recontextualizes a lot of stuff after the fact in a good way so we care more and it does not just focus on the future....we see glimpses of how yusuke met keiko and his bond with kuwabara before episode 1 began later on too and that's a neat way to show that stuff...thirdly I love the underlying themes and narrative choice of responsibility growing and maturing being the core of the series.. and of course I love the dark themed music and art style mix with comedy angle of this series....it's great for teens to watch ....
Yu Yu Hakusho is great and doesn’t need a remake. The only thing I didn’t like was the last arc. Not the arc as a whole. Just the pacing. I thought the arc itself had a great premise. It just went way too fast. 3 years passed in a few episodes and it did it poorly. It should have fleshed it out more. More time of showing Yuske getting to know Rizen. Showing a bit more of his training. It’s just too quick. And the exclusion of Kuwabara. I understand he wasn’t the strongest and it would have not been of help there but he could have been Yuske’s support or something. Outside of these grievances of the final arc I have no complaints on this series. Unlike DBZ and Inuyasha and some of those classics that are my favorites from back then I can pick them apart. I love them but I can pick them apart and state how much doesn’t make sense and is asspull or things like that but with Yu Yu Hakusho I can’t really do that. Sure there are a few instances that could have been written a bit better but I can’t pick apart this show. If it wasn’t for that last arc it would be a 9.5/10 for me but because of it I have to give it an 8.4.
yes exactly, but apparently Togashi had to rush the ending because the anime got so popular in it's time, it strained him, so he tried to make it end quick. I think that explains a lot about the horrible pacing in the three kings saga
Everything you have said makes me want to try an watch this again. I only got to the 16ep an just got bored of it. Everyone has told me to keep on but it may be how dated the art style, I will try. Im a big fan of hunter x hunter an have been watching some an show from the early 2000’s so Im seeing if that will help. Thanks for doing this video
If you’re really really struggling with watching it, start with the dark tournament saga (season 2, or the last 2 of season 1) and you can rewatch everything else after you fall in love with the show!
So as someone that couldn’t get into hunter hunter, but yu yu hakusho English dub is in your top 5 all time. What would you recommend as something not just similar but similar in character build up of a wide group that gets you to care for and understand them at a deep level, similar in humor and filler, as well as worthy antagonists?
@@zeokingsilver Honestly though, mostly for the better. The only character that I could say genuinely suffered from the change was Itsuki. The anime just made him too mellow, but other than that, the changes don't hinder it one bit. Especially in Three Kings.
The dark tournament wasn’t a critique on masculinity. Lmao you’re reading way too deep. Yusuke needed to grow up and stop having a juvenile view of the world. That meant being honest with those around you and to not shun them away like Toguro.
Truly a underappreciated classic anime definitely in my top 5
Yeah underappreciated but I think unless your a newcomer you probably heard of this series years ago
I 100% agree
I still stand by my opinion that Chapter Black is one of the best story arcs to come out of any WSJ series, *period.*
I personally thought the Wall Street Journal did even better with its reporting on the housing bubble tbh
@@eely225 I THINK you're confused my man...

I disagree, the setup was great but the arc falls apart at the end due to editor interference and thus Yusuke vs sensui ends on a wet fart

YuYu Hakusho is not only a Masterpiece but definitely on Anime Mount Rushmore and my personal favorite/BEST anime of all time.
