Criminally overlooked series. Nadesico feels like a loving homage/parody of mecha and sci-fi anime, and is arguably in the same league of parodies such as Galaxy Quest.
@@laurencemoore2105 The two series definitely share similiarities, despite the differences in their premise and plot. Both series got a group of people working together (Nerv vs Nergel/Nadesico crew), and most of them have some kind of personality disorder or problems (then again, who doesn't?). Both have young people piloting mechs. Evangelion has a more dark and psychological take on what the characters go through, whereas Nadesico by comparison has a more light-hearted and optimistic take.
I've always seen Nadesico as some parody of the super robots and real robots, particularly gundam, with its themes and tropes. Gekigangar is obviously getter robot. The Jovians are Zeon with the commander resembling Gihren and tsukumo's death used as propaganda much like Garma's. Akito resembles the teens with PTSD like Amuro or Shinji. A young but competent leader like Yurika as Bright was.
I don't think they were anti-capitalist. They showed that all sides can be twisted, and that we have to be incredibly careful with power. You can argue that Nergal was the least corrupted major faction in the story, but what's so cool is that every side has good and bad.
This was the first anime i watched outside of pokemon/dragonball Z (whatever was on TV at the time) It was a little clunky but genuinely made me fall in love with anime. Ive rewatched it as an adult and it still holds up :)
This is one of those shows that got me into anime. I loved how wacky and fun but also honest and unflinching it was. The movie really just left me with so many questions, and I remember searching for translations of the Sega Saturn plotlines to figure out what happened after the movie. I was young then, so I thought if I kept looking, I'd find answers... eventually, just like growing up, I realized the answers aren't always there. Thanks for this recap.
Episode 21, "The Meadows We Once Ran Across" is one of my all time favorite anime episodes. If you pay attention to the hints in the episode, it actually answers many of the mysteries that we don't find out until the very end. Like the true identity of Dr. Inez. The reason why Mars was so important to the Jovians. The nature of the teleportation ability (which links to why Akito, as well as Yurika, and Inez, could teleport,) which is connected to Akito's teleporting and finding himself on the dark side of the Moon. Hint: The big question you need to ask is what do most of the characters playing Mahjong have in common, and what do we know about the two outliers?
For anyone who enjoyed the ADV dub of Evangelion, I'd say that Nadesico's English dub is a real treat. Watching the series in dub felt strangely meta at times🤣
My favorite part is: We're here to rescue you, _no we wanna stay, you can't make us leave_ Oh no we caused a cave in, So who let us rescue them? No one, they got crushed. The moral of the story i learned is, If they won't let you help them, let a cave in happen instead,😜
I own and loved this show, yet haven’t watched it in many years…I may need to pull it out and watch it again soon, probably have time between shows ending and new ones starting. Thanks for this great reminder/review 😊
Definitely a hidden gem! I've loved this anime since it first aired in the US (I think it was on toonami at some point, pretty certain) definitely a small but faithful cult fan base 💙
I first learned about this series when I downloaded and played SRW A on a GBA emulator when I was a kid. Then I watched the series a few years back, and recently started watching it again. I have came to appreciate the humour of the series. Definitely underrated and not talked about enough in North America. I believe the show was somewhat popular in Japan when it came out, considering it was featured a lot in the Super Robot Wars series.
Anime and off the topic music included from the 80’s and 90’s was normally pretty good so even the cheesiest ones would probably destroy 90% of the stuff being made now.
Nedesico the TV Series = Awesome Nedesico the Movie = OK The Gekiganger movie = Pretty good Definitely one of the more genre meta gaming itself both seriously and hilariously at the same time.
hmmm this anime is a comedy the plot doesn't matter as much. Most people don't watch a comedy for the plot they watch for the comedy same for a horror movie people dont watch a horror movie for the plot they watch to get scared.
I for one want this Anime have remastered version and expand more on the Martian Advance Civilization that build the Mars South pole relics .....and the games "the blank of three year" bridge between TV series and the Prince of Darkness movie....
Those unforgettable days, for them, I live
This brings back memories. This anime was pure slapstick insanity and I love it. People need to watch more classic anime
Here, here. I have not only Martian Successor Nadesico AND Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water.
S/O to the anime network on in demand back in the day
I pretend the movie doesn’t exist.
Still one of my favorite anime series to date. 💕

You get to burning!
Friendship with evangelion is over
Now nadesico is my favorite show
The two series make good companions if watched one after the other, can't quite explain why, but they weirdly do!

It is a Master piece. One of my favorite anime series by far.

In terms of parody/homage, I would argue there's a little bit of Macross sprinkled in there, as well.
@@BCBaron The idol episode is definitely Macross
@@user-pi1lb4tf2f It almost seemed as though Yurika was intended to be an amalgamation of Minmei and Misa Hayase.
@@BCBaron Yurika's way too competent to be Minmei lol.
Nadesico, a classic. 👍

Solid review. I would've probably added a couple of positive notes regarding the soundtrack and the well above average English dub.

The English dub is the best part. Delightfully unhinged.
My heart is swelling and tears are flowing. This was one of my all time favorites

Nadsico is the M*A*S*H of anime.

It's already a gem right from the get go.

A TRUE MASTERPIECE (even the Dreamcast games lulz)

Jfc that movie ending is depressing wtf
4:48 isn't a narcotic, it's the nano-machine injection that you have to get in order to pilot anything.
My favorite character is Colonel yurika Misumaru and Major Ruri Hoshino.
I remember this anime since 2000
You should do a video on Irresponsible Captain Taylor anime.
Why no mention of the great music? One of the most memorable music for anime!
so... the enemy are literal otakus?
Nedesico the TV Series = Awesome
Nedesico the Movie = OK
The Gekiganger movie = Pretty good
Definitely one of the more genre meta gaming itself both seriously and hilariously at the same time.
Did you realy watch it, the show says Nadesco all the time, not Nadesico (despite that being the name)
Great video guys gave me a mothers basement vibe here
where you watch or download it?
It's on Crunchyroll
Joel love Minato Haruka
i kinda recall that movie was goign to be 1 of 3 before the movie did badly.
Love this show.
Capitalism is good
Unchecked Capitalism is bad
Communism is always bad
How does a guy get into reviewing anime and not learn to pronounce the series title correctly? ^_^;
hmmm this anime is a comedy the plot doesn't matter as much. Most people don't watch a comedy for the plot they watch for the comedy same for a horror movie people dont watch a horror movie for the plot they watch to get scared.
I think this show sucks shit but it had some good ideas and moments at least. I think Yurika and Ruri are really cute too
