    If you read TV21 in the 1960s, you might remember the junior branch of Spectrum from Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons: The Spectrum Shades.
    Spectrum made a range of bizarre requests of their junior contingent from disguises and costume designs. Here's Chris's review of the Spectrum Shades in TV21.
    Taken from FAB Live's BIGRAT Bytes from March 2019.

    Did you write in? Were you 'in' the Spectrum Shades? We'd love to hear from you!

      Gerry Anderson I was in the spectrum shades.

      Yes, I was in the Spectrum Shades and I think I may still have the badge somewhere. Though I don't remember sending my bus tickets to Captain Ochre. I also had a decoder disc to read secret messages in Red Code and Blue code, though I think that was an earlier, Thunderbirds era, item. I defected to Look and Learn - I can't remember when I stopped getting TV21, other that that there was an interminable story about Troy Tempest getting framed for something. The story went on for weeks, and I'd stopped buying TV21 so never found out the ending.

    I love the comment about Captain Magenta being sent straight to bed... he so would.
    Like, wow the letters on racism and sexism were quite an eye opener. Though I'm glad to see some of the letters showing more positive views (especially on the racism aspect which is fitting for Spectrum being a multiracial organisation. That's fitting of a true Sepctrum Shade).
    Are WIGS the female division of BISHOP?

      I was surprised about the relative decency of the letters page, that lunatic with the mnemonic aside. Shows that not everyone was awful, even in the UK in the 1960s!

    I've seen a lot of old children's comics and magazines with these sorts of letters pages, and in a lot of them - especially some of the older ones - the discussions seem to run the same gamut of subjects, and swing from the normal to the bizarre to the mature with the same alarming frequency. The correspondence on more 'mature' subjects is always interesting to me, as it brings up a number of possibilities regarding the person asking the question:
    On the one hand, it _could_ well be that a forward-thinking kid has written in with an issue, and their awareness and understanding of that issue just happens to be greater than would normally be expected of them, especially at the time. But on the other hand, part of me also wonders whether it _is_ a kid at all. Many of these letters pages only say that a letter was sent in by, say, _Trevor from South Shields_ or _Damaris from Birmingham_ without disclosing their age, so it's entirely possible that some adults - on the editing staff or otherwise - could use these pages as a platform to get their own opinions across by disguising them as those of children.
    Just to be clear, I've yet to find any record of this sort of thing _actually_ happening, but it's just a thought...

    Hang about, a Magenta replica pistol? Wish I had the cash for it. Magenta was my favourite in Scarlet for reasons still unclear twenty years on. When I heard there were these replica pistols (I only saw Scarlet and Black online) I didn't think anyone else would get a look in, never mind Magenta, White and Ochre.

    If I remember correctly, the initial “tests” for being promoted in colour-grade were so childish, the whole thing was weak instead of things like the Daily Mail’s I-Spy organisation which got kids looking around . ( This from a 60+guy who remembers getting his Supercar wings and ID card,.....”Charging Port, “10,000,12,000, 13,000, 14,000,15,000, interlock on, Fire One.........” )

      I was both a Spectrum Shade AND a member of the I-Spy Tribe (and still have my badge and "Top Secret" codebook - available from all good newsagents for 2/6d). The badge features in a self-portrait by Peter Blake, now in (IIRC) Tate Britain.

    Is Capt Magenta magenta because of "sexual assignment" of the time, linking pink to females?

    Oh no, puh-lease, not millennials slagging off TV21 comic and its readers. And worse, from an official Gerry Anderson site too. Give me a break! Could you not have got someone who was actually, you know, alive back then (we might be ancient but we've not all died off yet) to come on and talk knowledgeably about those terrific comics (and spin-offs like Joe 90: Special Agent and Penelope), and share some enthusiasm rather than giving us some 'comedian' treating it all as a joke? You know, the average age of Gerry Anderson fans must be a lot higher than the kids presenting this video, so how about a tiny bit of respect for the people who created these comics and the first generation Anderfans who read them. Now get off my lawn! ;-)

      This is a fun, irreverent, tongue-in-cheek look at one aspect of TV21. The comic is not being slagged off, and nor are its readers. If you'd like to see an example of the 'respect' we show for TV21 and its creators, then maybe check out our Mike Noble tribute video? If an original reader wants to make a video and submit it to us, they are more than welcome. Please put something together and send it to support@gerryanderson.co.uk - we'd love to feature it!

      I'm with you, Andrew. I think it is something we see more and more with younger fans commenting on the classics in things like this video or in podcasts. They were not there so they don't get the context. Maybe it's time the old geezers, the 'grey geeks' if you will, fought back and started making our own videos and podcasts... well, if we can find our glasses and work out how the technology works (darn, now I know how my parents felt when they used to ask me to program the video recorder - that was when our generation were the masters of the universe, LOL).

      That's the thing about the older generation, an apparent lack of understanding that you can love something passionately and lampoon it at the same time. How about cutting the younger crew some slack? ;)

    • @colinp2238
      @colinp2238 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Back in those days it was Capt Black and White on our televisions but we had imagination to fill in the blanks as computers filled whole walls just look at SHADO base in UFO, if you can peel your eyes away from the women).
      The younger generation have always made fun of the olders, think back to when you was a kid, it's part of growing up.

    • @jackhargreaves1797
      @jackhargreaves1797 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ACtheLegend Oh, it's not that we don't appreciate a good lampoon (we're the generation of Mad magazine, Monty Python, That Was The Week That Was (ask your grandad), MASH, etc. But there is a thin line between a good natured send-up and being snarky. And, for me, this fell the wrong side of snark. ... Oh, and, by the way, it seems like five minutes since I was as young as you, Andrew...believe me, one day you'll find you're one of the older generation too and wondering where the heck the time went to. See how you feel when you're the wrong side of the generation gap (I'd add 'and get back to me' but by then I shall be decomposing somewhere). :-)
