    Video Introduction:
    India minted another unicorn this year as Mensa Brands, the ecommerce roll-up firm founded by former Myntra CEO and Medlife cofounder Ananth Narayanan, entered the unicorn club. Mensa Brands raised $135 million in a new funding round led by Alpha Wave Ventures (Falcon Edge Capital).
    Mensa Brands is one such start up that has taken the Indian start up eco-system by surprise!! In just 6 month of its launch, this company raised 300 million dollars from to become the fastest growing unicorn in Indian business history!!! In these 6 months Mensa has already acquired 12 consumer brands like Villain, Karigiri and in the month of October itself these brands seem to have hit growth of 250% and 140% respectively!and what is even mindblowing is that while very other Start up in India is engaged in a cash drain incurring millions of dollars of losses,Mensa has claimed to become profitable within these 6 months itself!!How does their business model work? and most importantly, an entrepreneurs in this Indian Start up space, what are the opportunities that MENSA BRANDS is creating for people like you and me?

      As what i understand a normal Indian behavior, owners wouldn't even want to sell this business easily. They would be ready to take huge loans, sell all property before admiting defeat. But Mensa like brand is offering funds in partnership seems a good way to approach to a mutual understanding and partnership.

    • @hiteshgujarathi4636

    I see this model to be inspired by the existing PE firms' LBO model, where Mensa acquires these small-scale brands and helps them grow similar to PE firms acquiring a not-so-well-performing company, rejig its structure and sell it off. But, I see a challenge in managing brands from different sectors after a while as the synergies and resource deployment might not be that easy.

    • @mensch-ash
      @mensch-ash 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, the strategy seems to be largely based on economies of scale. I'd argue that's a very mechanistic POV at the opportunity here. EOS is tablestakes, and maybe an arbitrage exist for a moment in time, but it is not the fundamental thing that matters when building brands.

    • @NvrsharmaIIT
      @NvrsharmaIIT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mensch-ash yeah i think building a brand needs conviction and it happens only when you have couple of them and not many..not sure how well this will turn out. They are acquiring what i understood well performing brands which cannot grow further due to shortage of resources or some barriers. And since Mensa has investment (funds) they are growing these brands further beyond that saturation point. They are not acquiring lose making startups.

    Mensa's idea of keeping the founder is brilliant than Thrasio, because under Mensa these founder's can manage their companies once getting helped by Mensa, so that Mensa can focus on other digital companies and those founder's may come up with other new products. In Thrasio, the burden is just over Thrasio itself by giving the founder's 100%.

    • @cauliflowerhead2735

      Mensa is buying out the brands to eventually acquire it and the owners of those brands most certainly know that which will increase tug-of-war in the decision making unless the owners relent to the eventuality of their product and stop bothering about it, perhaps channel their money into other endeavours.

    • @nishantagrawal3390
      @nishantagrawal3390 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      You make a good point about keeping owners in the game. However this will also increase the payout to them in the future when Mensa will eventually acquire them for 100% stake. From a financial standpoint, bigger hit to Mensa compared to Thrasio, not sure if this really is a good strategy

      It has existed in India since centuries only insights and enlightenment is needed to use it in real life business situations. During the age of kings, The stronger kingdoms use to acquire small kingdoms in order to have a bigger territories after those strong kingdoms used to transform these smaller kingdom in prosperity and military bases using their resources. Therefore, application remains the same only technique are refurbished and used in modern age.

    As Mensa grows, so do the small brands under its umbrella. On the other hand... As the brands grow, so does Mensa.
    It is this synergistic approach which drives Mensa's appeal and valuation.
    Mensa has to continually innovate, break new ground, try innovative ideas, think outside the box. Continuous unorthodox thinking and marketing is at the core of Mensa's approach. This coupled with the rising use of Smartphones for purchase, higher disposable income with poor investment knowledge, and eagerness to "fit in" or FOMO, will help the brands as well as Mensa grow further.

    I collect a lot of perfumes as I have the love for it. I saw so many ads of Villain perfume on my socials that I finally ordered one. But honestly, don't buy it. They say its EDP but the smell doesn't even last, means its cheap and mostly alcohol based. EDPs in general constitute of 15-25% oil but Mensa clearly mentions that its 95% alcohol; its a notorious game.
    Nevertheless, a good researched video like the others. Let's see how far can they survive with the Thrassio model.

    I'm here seeing all type of business ideas and start-ups for 3 to 4 years, I can see how startup have changed and how new ideas are popping out, like these it's super awesome, I wish to such things but there's no one with my same mindset, So I'm sitting all day and seeing new startups and ideas in technology.
    Here I will get into my govt job next month, but I always wish to be an entrepreneur, a small scale entrepreneur, because we still haven't touch the huge benifits of tier 2 and tier 3 places in India.
    Is there anyone like me here?

    It is a boon for small companies who need scaling. Then Mensa needs such diversity to grow them. It is a challenge to the marketer and the ample example of Amazon as a platform allows it to sell various products and brands at the same time.
    Same way Mensa can be multi product -brand seller which can spin money than focusing on one vertical.
    On the long run, if money runs out, there will be issued and hence reaching growth stage is vital.
