Never heard before of that phenomenal cellist Mr. Hošek! Honestly, he urgently deserves a much greater degree of recognition! His technique is absolutely brillant!
Numbers are not important :) I know Popper's music (I play the recorder and transcribed many of his studies) and find it amazingly beautiful as well as deeply human. Same happens with C.J. Andersen, Th. Boehm, E. Köhler (flute) or C. Sivori, Ch. de Beriot (violin) or even Ch. Koechlin (known? composer). Everyone is a world of possibilities, same happens with audiences.

This slow movement is one of the most touching pieces ever conceived, those lower phrases are incredible as is the whole story told by Popper. Check his Requiem for 3 celli and piano.
I can never understand why the opening melody never repeats. Its absolutely phenomenal.
The opening theme comes back for a little bit at 7:40. I do agree with you, what a gorgeous melody it is

It seems to me that only piano and violin have more great repertoire choices than cello.
