Some of my favourite songs are ones which on first listen I really didn't get or appreciate. Opeth for the longest time I really got off on the wrong foot with, but in the end a decade and change later, my god - they have some of the greatest music ever laid down imo.

100% It took me ages to get Schism. I love that song now. Definitely not a song you could listen on repeat but an absolute masterpiece. Also, I loved Lateralus from the first listen but it definitely took some practice to catch the Fibonacci sequence in the time signatures. Tool are an amazing band, but fuck me, they can melt your mind 😂

In a certain way, listening to music requires skill like anything else. If you can't pay attention to how each instrument intertwine and compliment each other as the song progresses, then you're not really hearing the song the way it's meant to be heard. I hate articulating this shit. I just read back the sentence that I wrote just now and I can understand how some might misinterpret it. It's just hard as hell to explain how to absorb what this band has to offer without sounding pretentious as all hell. So what I usually do is just get people high, shut the hell up, let them hear it for themselves, and hope they understand.

Agreed, as much as Maynard didn't believe in organized religions, which i totally get, This tribute to his Mother is beautiful, I personally think that he's saying sarcastically "yeah Mom, you were only a cripple for 10,000 days (true story) your Faith never faltered, So I hope your 10,000 days of Suffering was worth it and you BETTER get your wings ! Maynard loved his Mother and didn't believe if God really existed WHY would he let her suffer so much? Very powerful song...... I love how the last verse He says :You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence
Judith Marie, unconditional one: Should you see your maker's face tonight
Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him:
"I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one"
Hallelujah, it's time for you to bring me home................................now thats what music is!!!

    • @JSchaffer214
      @JSchaffer214 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@monicajean37 I don't believe he's being sarcastic in this song at all. In the A Perfect Circle song "Judith" he's definitely being sarcastic but here, not so much. I believe he absolutely hopes her faith has been well placed and that if there really is a heaven then she's a shoe in....
You're the only one who can hold your head up high
Shake your fists at the gates, saying
      "I've come home now
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended
It's time now, my time now
Give me my, give me my wings"
He also touches on the fact that he never quite understood her, or others religious beliefs but that she was a testament to the strength one can attain in believing in a higher power...
Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance
Burden of proof tossed upon the believers
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence
      Judith Marie, unconditional one
      Just my two cents anyway.

      Ikr?? Love that lyric

    • @jenniferkuper8472
      @jenniferkuper8472 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@monicajean37 I read Maynard's biography a couple of weeks ago and as it relates to his mother it is even worse and gives perspective on where he is coming from in regards to organized religion. His mother's church was fairly fundamental in that they viewed a person suffering from an illness to be a sign from God that they deserved that illness. So when Judith had an aneurysm that resulted in partial paralysis, for (some) members of that church, it was proof that she had strayed from God and deserved that fate. Later when she decided to live with a male friend to help with living expenses she was essentially kicked out of the church because she was "living in sin" according to that church.
I think that is a sick form of religion and deserves to be rebelled against.
Tangentially related, in "Schism" Maynard sings these lyrics:
The poetry that comes from the squaring off between
And the circling is worth it
      Finding beauty in the dissonance
He then sings "Hallelujah" in 10,000 days about his mother's passing. It is extremely religious and at the same time dissonant with his views on religion but there is also extreme beauty within the lyric/feeling/context of the piece. Powerful as hell but not everyone gets it.

Though some of us take it worse than others, it didn’t bother me one bit. I was getting 10,000 days vibes from the song and that’s why I liked it. But a different Tool fan would want Lateralus or Undertow vibes. While they are all masterpieces of an album. I like 10,000 days. An opinion only needs one person. We all have them. from SongFacts and other articles: As lead singer Maynard James Keenan explains in commentary on aMOTION, his mother Judith Marie suffered a stroke in 1976 that left her partially paralyzed and wheelchair-bound. The length of time between her paralysis and her death was 27 years, or approximately 10,000 days. Judith was a devout Christian before the stroke, which happened when Maynard was 11 years old. Judith’s faith remained steadfast during her condition, which left her paralysed and unable to read, write, speak, walk or tell the time. Towards the end of her life, Maynard’s mother could no longer breathe unassisted.

Tool is totally a band that I hear something different every time I listen to their music. For me the biggest thing I notice is Maynard’s voice because I find it so calming and also powerful but I totally get what you say about the drums. I don’t think anyone has the right to criticise you for zoning in on a particular instrument that grabs you, that would be ridiculous. Also don’t feel like you have to apologise over and over, you are allowed to not like something and then when you feel like you made a mistake you corrected yourself, anyone who doesn’t appreciate that is just being an asshole 😂

Hey man, this one took a while to grow on me. I had to listen over and over again to fully absorb the lyrics, music and tone. My mom had MS and was trapped in her body for nearly 10,000 days herself while being devoted to God. My dad cared for her unwaveringly, giving up most of his life. After she passed, he moved and started his life over, started getting it together and living his best life, then died of Covid-19. Two more people who should be arriving at the gates shaking their fists. Hearing “give me my wings” fills me with such an indescribable combination of joy, relief, bitterness and rage every time I hear it.

Cool fact about Judith Marie: Maynard took her ashes and spread them over the part of his vineyard where he grows the grapes for his Judith wines so that she would have a part in the process and travel the world.
Now, listen to Jimmy by Tool and then Judith by A Perfect Circle!

"Each time you listen to it, you hear something you didn't hear before."
Exactly, and keeping this in your mind you're ready to react to more of Tool and Dream Theater and Haken if you can put it up in your schedule. Maybe you'll end up making a 500k sub special of "Twelve Step Suite"?

Big tool fan here. Like huge. They take some patience and understanding but are worth it 💯
Also the fans are kinda known for being somewhat toxic but don’t let it scare ya off. It’s a damn good(and important)band. Thanks for coming back for more Alex🤘

Took me a year to start getting their music

Respect to you for actually reflecting on why some fans were upset, then addressing it. This is one of the very few channels that doesn't "rate" songs. I never understand what people are rating the songs against. Personal taste, older music by the artist, every song they've ever heard? Rating is ridiculous. I like to see people discovering the music I love, but I don't need someone "rating". Just listen and accept it. Just like we all did. I appreciate people that *think* about how their words affect the people who are deeply emotionally involved in the music. Thanks.
    P. S. I understand that reactions to songs is the point of these channels, but I also think you don't get the full context of the music without listening to the albums all the way through. Sorry, too long. You're one of my favorites though. Keep up the good work.

IMO Lateralus, Right in Two and Culling Voices are the pinnacle of Tool, try one of em if you get the chance

Always emotional throughout this whole song but the first “give me my wings” part is what breaks me. Every time.

I can't turn it up loud enough, help hollering it, and then pounding my steering wheel or whatever's in reach while I well up. In-fucking-credible song, a true masterpiece.

I've never enjoyed a reaction video more in my life. I got to live through you as if I was watching it the first time. I loved it. Thank you. :)
