"Look, isn't a great reaction, I'm sorry." Actually, this was the best, most realistic and genuine reaction to this song. It pretty much hits everyone like that.
You're the only one who can hold your head up high Shake your fists at the gates, saying "I have come home now Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended
Indeed. The word he's looking for at the end is "heart-rending/heartbreaking." That's just what it is ...and it's enormously powerful and ridiculously beautifully written. 100-percent a perfect reaction and one that wouldn't likely go away no matter how many times he listens to it.
It is a shame the original got taken down because it was magic. I sat and watched this with my mom all the way through and we were both in tears. My mom went into a coma and later died after a knee operation in 2021. I think about her all day every day and I comfort myself with us watching this together. I love you mom, you are the greatest. I miss you and hope I see you again.
Can't help it man, my mother died last year from cancer and I can't stop crying listening to this song. Such an impactful song, nothing much to say, just very deep sad feelings.
This is the only song I know that consistantly makes me break down in tears, every. damn. time. Amazing song, and it kicked me square in the arse about seeing my parents more while they are still alive. To make something like this for your dead loved one and spread it to the world for people to feel the emotions, it's pure magic and a damn good deed to humankind.
Yes, I do too. To me, it means I empathize with Maynard because my mom means everything to me, and I know it would've fucked up my world and changed my life irrevocably if I witnessed that happen to her.
I am an Atheist and this song hits me EVERY TIME, because ultimately it’s a song about LOVE and that’s something we can ALL relate to. Great reaction!!
I cried the first time I heard and I had no idea what this was all about, English is not my native language and yet I got hammered by this master piece and then I got the true meaning of it and could understood properly the lyrics it was such an experience, and I still shed a tear every single time
Your few seconds silence after the song had finished, I heard your every word. No matter how many times I've heard these tracks, the raw emotion gets me every time.
this song (and some others) are even more powerful when you know that his mother had been paralysed from an brain aneurism for approximately the last ten thousand days of her life. he had been struggling with these feelings for a very long time even before she passed.
If you’ve ever lost a parent this song epitomizes to me what it feels like. The pain, anger and overwhelming love of it are represented in this song are flawlessly. This is just on a different level. This is that song that makes me cry but the kind of cry where you feel better afterwards. It helped me with my loss. These two songs as well as Parabol and Parabola are some of the most healing music I’ve ever come across.
Jim, this is the same reaction we all had when first listening to this song. Solemn awe, contemplation, and a sense of appreciation for the creative and emotional talent it took to create this song. I'm glad you didn't talk during the song. There's not much to say really. It speaks for itself.
Tool's Stairway to Heaven. Beautiful eulogy for Maynard's mother and one that hit me hard. Had a similar situation with my grandmother and it just really resonates.
I’m so sorry, music has power to change emotion or to drag up memories, feelings and emotions you thought were long buried. That’s why I believe it really does have magical qualities. And also once music is out in the world it doesn’t belong to the song writer anymore, everyone owns it as it becomes very personal to them. I hope you’re coping ok in these difficult times and you can find some other music that brings happier memories and thoughts. 👍🏼
"High is the way but all eyes are upon the ground" that's the deepest, most powerful vocal line i've ever heard. It's fucking heartcrushing, the way he sings it
Sometimes we have to acknowledge the limitations of words. It's ok to be at a loss for words and just feel what the song makes you feel. We can see what you feel, and because we felt/feel the same way about this song, your reaction is spot on. Few bands have the ability to stir the gauntlet of emotions like Tool does, and this is why Tool's fans are forever grateful they make the music they do. Keep spiraling out, Jim.
My art teacher 20 years ago saed to me: "Draw only what you can see." You can't fake reality. That's why this song is so powerful. And great in every way.
This is why they will go down as the best band to ever grace the planet. They are the only ones who can tap into your physique and manifest your own feelings into an audible sensory experience. Their art is for you to use.....as a Tool. You haven’t truly experienced this song until you’ve seen it live.
This song is hard to listen to...very powerful. And it makes even stronger when you know that Maynard is probably an atheist and kinda hates/despises religion because of what he's experienced as a child when he's mom became paralyzed and her church acted like she was being punished by something that she'd done, instead of helping them. So for Maynard to put his beliefs aside and write a song about her faith it's quite noble.
@@stefanforrer2573 I think that's true, and I also think it's true that Maynard has matured in his view of the religion he criticized for so many years (understandably so, if you put yourself in his shoes). Maybe realizing there's something to it after all, since he admits his "arrogance" with the "burden of proof tossed upon the believers", all the while his mom was his "witness" "eyes" and "evidence" the last word being the key here. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't go as far as to say that he believes in God, but I'd say he has gained respect for the faith, since it's clearly what carried his mom through the difficult times. It's such a great song, and I'm glad he wrote it even though it must have been painful to do so.
this is the only track by Tool i can't listen often. it can ruin a good day for sure and it can help you on a bad one, either. so most times i listen to the 10000 days album, i skip this 2-parted ode to Maynards mother, surely not in disrespect of the work the band has put into it. Jim, your reaction just underlines the insecurity how to deal with death in general, the unawareness about what happens with us. I don't have an answer, too.
We sometimes skip these the same way Tool doesn't perform these live anymore. The way the two songs work would've gotten these guys burned as witches, back in the Salem days.
As a long time Tool fan (20 years ago) i am ashamed to admit i never heard this before and i love discovering their "newer" material along with you. this brought tears to my eyes and it was comforting to see you having a similar reaction. ty for sharing this reaction video. was beautiful.
Dan Inbari I caught on about two years after Aenima and was in college when Lateralus dropped. Still vividly remember buying the CD and popping into the car hearing the opening to Grudge. That said, when 10,000 days album dropped I was working and didn’t fully dig in until about 6+months later. Boy was that a mistaaaaaake!! So many classics and this album, for me, has the best lyric I’ve ever heard/read. “Repugnant is the creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of our fleeting time here.” I DID NOT MAKE THAT SAME MISTAKE WRT FEAR INNOCULUM!!
Perfect reaction. This song hits me so hard and can relate to so much of it watching my mom in the hospital under those cold fluorescents slowly die of cancer and nothing I could do.
I enjoyed this song musically for years, but then my mom passed away and I finally understood the underlying pain contained in that music. It's so powerful, what a masterpiece.
Jim, it's the perfect reaction. The beauty of the song is it's true.. it's music in it's truest form. It wasn't made to appeal to a mass audience or to be catchy.. it's just heartfelt and honest and your reaction was equally true to those things. I remember when the album came out.. I was 17 years old and listening to it in the living room of my parent's house in the middle of the night and I remember the sweeping guitars panning from left to right and just going on a very intimate and personal journey for this song. I always come back to that moment when I listen to it. If I may, please check out Disposition/Reflection/Triad. It's in my opinion their magnum opus and when Tool was at their creative zenith. Hope all is well, cheers!
The quietest and most visceral tear infused reactions are the ones we LIVE FOR!! We all cry like babies listening to this alone. It shows true courage when you show your tears. Thank you.
Wow! A video that is 3 months old, has just short of 11,500 views, and not a single dislike. Proof that your reaction was not missing a single thing. Well done, Sir. :)
This has to be my favorite tool song of all time. This is not a song you can just put on as background noise. This is something that requires thought. It’s true art. Watching others experience it for the first time is so amazing to me, it lets me relive when I got to hear these songs for the first time myself.
You didnt say a single word until the songs where over. I appreciate that. In a weird way. And then you found the perfect word to describe everything that happened. Thank you :)
Well said. Great insight into a song that evokes emotion when you aren't expecting it. Tears every time for me. The music is haunting to me even after so many times listening.
18:14 is literally what I look like when this song ends...face somber..stroking my beard..contemplating how I have treated my mother. Absolutely beautiful reaction Jim, PLEASE keep them coming.
I can't remember if you already discussed this in a previous video.. but Maynards mom was paralyzed when he was 11 (stroke or aneurysm). She lived in that paralyzed state for 27 years, roughly 10,000 days.
Judith by A Perfect Circle and Jimmy by Tool are also about Maynard's mother, if you listen to them you can see how his look on his mother and her religious feelings have evolved over time. Judith is very aggressive and Maynard seems to be blaming his mother for keeping her religion throughout all of her hardships, whereas Jimmy is more about how he felt when his mother was becoming ill and how it has affected him. Really good insight into Maynard's life.
and that background of how he has felt over the years about her religious zealotry completely makes this song what it is. It's Maynard saying, "I don't agree with your beliefs but you have stuck to them. Let your beliefs judge you, not mine." He thinks she has a strong case with the maker if she's going to be judged by her faith. Having her demand her wings is, in a way, his ultimate acceptance of her beliefs; his shedding of his ego.
I was lucky enough to catch the last tour Maynard said he would do these live. It was such an amazing experience. So much power and emotion. Maynard truly has the ability to channel soul into art
Jim, you could see just how uneasy listening to this was making you, sharing such an intimate moment with Maynard and his grief process. It also looked like you were fighting back tears for a majority of it, too. The cut between then end of the song, and the reaction, makes me think that you may have lost that fight, or spent a damn good while digesting the emotions that were invoked by these masterpieces.
It's a tear-jerker, that's for sure. Every single time I listen to it within about 30 seconds, my emotions get the better of me. And this is coming from a person who rarely gets that emotional. I think it's due to the fact that it's so relatable. Whether you've lost your mother or knowing one day that you will, it's a bond like no other everyone dreads losing...
This was a great reaction Jim, don't feel bad about it. You said in two minutes some of the most insightful thoughts I've heard on any reaction to Tool. Fucking cheers again man!
Still gets me every time..........there is no band like TOOL, none........Im 53 years old and they have been the soundtrack of my life......Love this reaction more than any others.....thank you Jim
Seeing these played live during the 2006 tour was surreal. Absolutely stunning. And now after losing my grandpa to a 7 year battle with Lewy Body Dementia, these two songs hit home harder than they did when I first heard it.
Jim, I found your reaction to be genuine, and that is whats important. I haven't listened to these songs collectively in a long time although I still regularly revisit Tool. But watching this reaction and seeing your sincerity towards the subject only further pushed my emotional response to the song and made me experience it again almost in a new light. This song is dense. I believe dense is the word. Emotionally provoking! Jim your channel is great! I have only recently discovered it. You are sincere and you have a great taste in music!
Grief makes you think and do things you would not normally have thought or done. I get the reason for these songs. And, though they are gorgeous pieces of work that bring you on Judith Marie's journey, if they never perform them again, that would be okay too. There is no wrong reaction to these works, just as in grief. And for the whole band to agree to help him through it with their musical gifts was incredible. Thanks for this. Truly.
I’ve been listening to TOOL sine ‘06 and I’ve loved their music ever since👍🏾. I didn’t think I’d be listening to them more but, after seeing all of these reaction vids I understand because my reactions were the same!✌🏾
You seemed rather rattled during and after the song, I hope you are doing ok Jim. Tool's music has a way of cutting right through our protective barriers.
I've seen 'yes' and 'all of them' given as answers to 'what time signature is this in?' Also, it actually *was* a great reaction video! Your failure to find words speaks volumes. They really are something else.
My mom is still alive, this is one of my favorite songs of all-time, and I know every note and inflection. It can still make me cry. Fantastic reaction.
I loved your reaction here. It is totally beyond me how this artist gets these thoughts and words out without cracking or having a total break down. Great music! Great message! Thank You Tool!
I think what you couldn't say about the songs speaks as much as what you could. I am glad I got to see you experience this and relive the emotional journey with you. Ultimately I think that is why these songs exist, as a way for listeners to share that journey and bear the beauty and sadness of losing a life together. Thank you Jim.
Seeing this performed live was heart wrenching and so emotional. It was obvious MJK was struggling to sing the song. My heart went out to him that night. A Beautiful and heartfelt song about a beloved mother. Your reaction was perfect Jim.

I think it's due to the fact that it's so relatable. Whether you've lost your mother or knowing one day that you will, it's a bond like no other everyone dreads losing...
This song makes me cry ALWAYS
Humbled and privileged , indeed. Well put.
Oh my...I teard up. Need a Towel. But thanks for your Heart melting Reaction!🤗
I don watch many reaction vids but I do try to watch all tool reaction vids... I always appreciate when someone gives an honest reaction. Thanks.
Paw passed at 89 last year and this song alone helped me get through.
As he'd of said; I sorted it out.
Cried my eyes out first time I heard it, 2nd and 3rd also.
Thanks Robert, I’m very glad you appreciated the video! 👍🏼
Jim Newstead brother Jim , you’re fantastic
544 likes and 0 dislikes. That speaks volumes about this song and his reaction to it.
Seeing these played live during the 2006 tour was surreal. Absolutely stunning. And now after losing my grandpa to a 7 year battle with Lewy Body Dementia, these two songs hit home harder than they did when I first heard it.
I lost my mom 2 years before this album came out.
It still makes me cry every time I hear it.
Sorry to hear that Jeremy, loss is horrible.
These 2 songs hit home, for sure.
Every time.
Its so sad the the original video has been removed. It was such a beautiful video and i used to watch it all the time.
These two songs get me every time...
I didn’t think I’d be listening to them more but, after seeing all of these reaction vids I understand because my reactions were the same!✌🏾
Can’t wait to see them next week in London! So excited!!!!
I've known both these tracks for 17 years and I still cry my eyes out to this day. It's impossible not to feel anything
I would have to say that was an amazing reaction Jim.
You seemed rather rattled during and after the song, I hope you are doing ok Jim. Tool's music has a way of cutting right through our protective barriers.
Bricktowne Media nicely stated.
That it does. Ergo why we connect with it in this way.
Tool songs are an emotional rollercoaster....
I've seen 'yes' and 'all of them' given as answers to 'what time signature is this in?'
Also, it actually *was* a great reaction video! Your failure to find words speaks volumes. They really are something else.
My mom is still alive, this is one of my favorite songs of all-time, and I know every note and inflection.
It can still make me cry.
Fantastic reaction.
I've heard these songs no less than 100 times and I cry each time
I loved your reaction here. It is totally beyond me how this artist gets these thoughts and words out without cracking or having a total break down. Great music! Great message! Thank You Tool!
The new HAKEN video dropped. It's from their album coming out this October. It's called The Good Doctor. Super cool song.
It's such an onslaught of sound, you're good m8 keep it up.
Jim, you have just made a perfect reaction - thank you very much. 🙏🏼
this song actually brings me to tears now...knowing what its about.
I just buried my mommy this past Sunday, I still have a giant hole in my heart.
This song sure can bring on the chills if not the tears. Brilliant
