      Why would a gay person be considered as a plague 🤔, you are yourself and has diffirent tastes. I think it would also be great for Ken to talk it out with a therapist and then, you and he can talk it out, Ken doesn’t need that bagage if so, share it with him 💑.

      @@johanandersson8252 It's the 1970s and 1980s we're talking about, which has a completely different culture and different viewpoints on social norms. Back during that time period, people were taught in school that gay people are sick. I've in fact, seen some of the videos they would show kids about this issue back in my AP World History class.

    I'm 44 years old, and I grew up thinking that since I was gay, I would be dead of AIDS before I was 30. That's how frightening it was back then. I don't think most people comprehend that. Straight people certainly don't, especially if they're younger. I totally understand where you and Ken are coming from. When you've worked this hard to wade through all the nonsense and hatred you grew up with, and struggled for DECADES to become the person you are now, it's something you feel the need to defend.

      @St4rTr3v1Ut10n 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      That does sound horrifying. I'm under 40, so the AIDS epidemic wasn't really something I worried about, and it's so easy to say "Oh just use a condom!" but people had no idea what was really happening. Princess Diana shaking hands with an AIDS patient was huge news. We're glad to still have you with us!

      I think its hard for people now to imagine. When I was around 11 I was terrified to go to the doctor because I thought I might have aids. I had never had sex but from the way my religious family talked I thought gay people just GOT aids. I also thought the doctor would be able to medically tell I was gay.

    I'm seeing a lot of comments that seem to suggest that this "clearing of the air" means everything is just fine between the two of them. And while I think both videos show that there is no animosity between them, I don't get the sense that "everything is cool" now. It seems Erick still didn't understand why his comments were problematic even after hearing this very personal story. And he was even further adamant that he is not apologizing for what he said. The best resolution to come out of this is David's request to people not to go retaliate on Erick's channel and for people to stop asking for a collab between the two. But to think all this good now is naïve.

      That's fair but the same point David is not helping the situation here because he very explicitly stated in this video that Eric said gay people are plague at no point in any given context or situation did he use those words meanwhile David is making it a point to be very specific about the word that you use and he's paraphrasing what Eric said so that's not helping

      Well you gotta remember that Erick was speaking very broadly and his intent was to shit on the left wing extremists. He didn't go out of his way to attack David for his sexuality.
      I do think that Erick needs to learn the root of the problem though, he blames the LGBT community, because that's the face that represents all the issues he is against. Thing is that it's not really the LGBT community that is causing this, it is the left wing extremists who are using the LGBT community as meatshields.
      It's an easy misunderstanding to make and it's very unfortunate that these people have been used as political meatshields but that's the world we live in I'm afraid, people preying on others for their own selfish gain, that's what politics really is. Erick needs to learn this, I agree but at the same time, I do see his frustrations and his intentions and I can safely say that they are not wrong, heck I agree with them, fuck extremism.

    • @alanscott2517
      @alanscott2517 3 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Eric decided to speak on David's behalf in his video, saying that David knows he's not a homophobe. David gave Eric the respect of not speaking for him. David's pure class. It's clear that things are not settled or hashed out, but that they are as close as they can be for now and if it's all David feels like dealing with it then I don't blame him at all.

    It's hard to believe there's homophobic gamers in 2021, when taking up games as a hobby pretty much requires you to have an open mind in and of itself (ESPECIALLY concerning Japanese games). But I've personally witnessed the videogame community grow more and more toxic since gaming went online. Don't even get me started on Gamergate.

    People born after 1990 probably will not know that HIV/AIDS started off being called GRID (Gay-related Immune deficiency). When I was a kid we watched a movie about a kid who contracted the disease from a blood transfusion (Ryan White), and that kind of opened a lot of people's eyes about it (and Magic Johnson contracting HIV). So the term 'plague', while bad, is going to have even more meaning for people who remember the 1980s and early 1990s.

I am weary of people when they say "nobody's perfect, we all mess up". There is a difference between "messing up" and deliberately choosing to harm a community of people. And yet, regardless of either situation, proper accountability of the perpetrator must be taken seriously. Needless to say, I am no longer interested in supporting said individual. David, I'm 36, and I've been out since 2001 when I was 16. Having spent two full decades in the LGBT community, I've seen the continuing effect of the HIV/AIDS crisis. We lost an entire generation from our culture, including activists, artists, musicians, etc who would've influenced the next generations of gay men and the wider culture. We suffered huge setbacks politically and socially, basically undoing a lot of the progress our community had made since Stonewall '69 and the early pride parades. in the 1980s, Reagan utterly ignored AIDS and HIV to avoid upsetting his reactive conservative base and the rising evangelical tide that compared HIV to a biblical plague. So not only did we lost an entire generation of LGBT people, but we also suffered psychological damage as a community due to the rising, more vitriolic homophobia that ensued. I see the word "plague" associated with gay people, and see a particularly insidious slur.
    But maybe Erick really was ignorant of that entire concept, I don't know. I think the best thing to do is to simply ignore him, block his channel, and forget about the guy. Focus on the larger group of people who enjoy your work for its own merits.

    I've been trying to think of what to write. Erick's plague comment struck a nerve in me. I've heard that rhetoric time and again from family, bosses, strangers...
    We can try and ignore those comments, but those ideologies aren't just words. They add to the hate and descrimination we face every day of our lives.
    Erick's non-apology came after 3 hours of talking with you. He heard the same story we did, and he still thought what he said was justified. I don't understand how he justifies it, and I doubt I ever will.
    Taking Erick out of the conversation entirely, stories like Ken's are so important. My heart breaks at what earlier generations went through. I don't think I'd have it in me to not only survive, but to put myself back out there and find love. Ken is incredibly strong, and I hope he realizes what a huge inspiration he is.
    Anyway, this comment has gone on long enough. Thank you for the work you do, and for turning a bad situation into a teachable moment. You rock, my dude.

    Man, I can't even imagine how hard it hurts to lose one long term partner, let alone several. For what little it's worth, my heart goes out to Ken. I'm glad he's persevered and met you. I hope y'all continue having a good marriage for however many decades you both have left to walk the Earth.
    I grew up in Georgia with gay peers at every stage of my life, from middle school into college. Life didn't stop there, and I met many gay peers in the military. Almost every one of them was someone that I made friends with, and threw everything I was raised with into question. I will be 32 in a few months. While I may never fully understand my gay peers' perspective, I will always understand that anyone who is gay is just like me outside of that. There is no need for hate.
    You're wonderful David. I look forward to more of your video game content, and more of your life stories. I think your life stories help me keep things in perspective, and they also help me find ways to explain what I know to people who don't know it yet.

    I know this is an older video, but I just saw it and had to respond. I'm almost a decade older than you, hetero, and I grew up in the deep south, so very much remember that time w/ the aids virus. It broke my heart hearing this story, but you and your partner are strong. Never change. My best friend who is more of a brother to me than my own flesh and blood told me almost a decade after meeting him that he was gay but married a woman to conform. he wasn't happy and finally got divorced and embraced himself. He was hesitant to tell his friends and some did choose to not have anything to do with him, however I told him this I don't care who you love as long as they love you back. you're my best friend and I love you. I meant it. I've known him now for getting close to 30 years (god i feel old saying that) but it's still true. He once told me that he had to hide most of his early life because in the south he had 2 big things against him, he was black and he was gay. I've seen a lot of moving forward here and i'm so happy. I told my child long ago I don't care who you love, just be loved back. Anyways, enough rambling, you really touched my feelings w/ this story. THANK YOU for being YOU

    Even when I'm trying to not watch videos about video games in general, to not get too distracted (a problem I'm having) I always comeback to your channel. Not only because its great to hear someone talking with passion about something you like, but also for the simple fun and sincerity of your content. And as you said in your past video, nothing of this has anything to do with your sexuality, and, aside of a little inside joke from time to time, is something you never bring back in your videos, so far as I know. I also happen to watch some of Erik's videos, the fact he is from Mexico (and I'm also from Latinoamerica) perhaps make them more relatable to me, because the struggle it was to get videogames (and more rpgs) a couple of decades ago, and how of a weird hobby it was inside our own culture. So your incident with Erik brought back some memories about growing up in this side of the world, where's was (and sadly still is) a lot of negative prejudices about the gay community, and most of the straight people grew up learning to reject anything different to the "norm". Thankfully I learned trough life to break this ideas, sometimes the hard way, and saw all the pain and trauma that simple words and attitudes can create in someone, and the pain and indignation I felt in your voice (and rightfully so) just break my heart. I know this experiences can be a common place around the world, but I brought them up because I know of first hand how things are in Latinoamerica and sometimes you just do and say things for mere ignorance, sometimes as a joke, some others without even realizing it, but with not evil intention whatsoever, and I'm almost sure this was Erik case. And as in my case, I hope seeing how his actions ended up hurting someone will make his view of the world change a little, and helping realize we all are just people, beyond the place we live or who we slept with, and we all deserve the same respect and the same opportunities. I'm really sorry this situation brought you back some bad memories, but I'm thinking in Erik when I say we all can learn and change, and hopefully be better human beings. Keep up being the awesome guy you are and go ahead with your channel, it brings positive things to much more people than you can imagine.

The norm is right handed, lefties CAN use their right hand, but it don't feel natural. There is differences in people that make them left handed. If you are Left handed, it's because they where born left handed.

    Ultimately, the lesson here is, words hurt. I watched both videos. I am subscribed to both channels. Both of them cover my one of my favorite genres, JRPGs. However, I think at this point, it’s best that both parties agree to disagree. As someone who is a bisexual male, I do feel more for David than Erick, because LGBTQ+ individuals already have to go through so much in their personal lives. The fact that you are treated differently and can lose important connections, such as close friends and family, just because of who you’re attracted to is upsetting. Who I love and am intimate with shouldn’t have any effect on your personal life, but the thing is, straight people don’t have to think about things like this. Hell, some people are quicker to accept an interracial relationship than a gay relationship, and before y’all come at me, yes, there are still societies out there that frown upon interracial relationships. I’m glad both of them addressed the issue, but I definitely do know that this is a “forgive, but won’t forget” situation.

    As a straight dude, I can't say I relate to the legitimate struggles that people of the LGBT face. I can say that they have every right to exist, and live normal, human lives, with normal human experiences. This is from my limited experiences with members in that community that are close to me.
    I can say though, that I am glad that you exist, and this video and this channel has helped me through my own biases.

I'm only a few years younger than you, and even that small difference was enough to put me in an age bracket where most of my exposure to the AIDS conversation in the 90s was thru PSAs on special episodes on TV shows, or as fear fuel for pushing an broader abstinence agenda. A lot of people just truly aren't aware of the real impacts on fellow human lives by these types of conditions and situations throughout history, and sharing those stories with real names and real faces as opposed to just statistics can often help others develop or strengthen their sense of empathy, myself included. I only recently found your channel, ironically while searching for one of Erik Landon's videos and that's when I found your first video going over your encounter, or lack thereof, with Erik. I wanted to chime in and say that I wholeheartedly feel for your situation and love the message of this video.
    Even though I myself am straight, my best friend since college is gay, my brother-in-law (with whom I'm close) is gay, my wife is bi, my brother is bi and a very close friend is trans, and with all of us living in Texas, I've definitely seen the struggle that they've dealt with because of it, and often still do to this day, all for simply loving who they love and following who they are, I remember people trying to picket my brother-in-law's wedding and how much stress and pain that caused him and his fiancé (at the time, now husband). I see the pain on my trans friend's face when she is misgendered even after informing the other person of her gender. I've been there for my best friend after he was fired from a job simply because his boss found out he was gay and since Texas is a right-to-work state, was fired without any official reason needing to be given. I remember helping my brother to come to be okay with who he was, even though we were raised in a household with our father, who through homophobic slurs around like they were nothing and I saw how much pain that caused him.
    It's a painful thing to witness those struggles with those you love and are close with. No human being deserves to feel like a disease, burden or being of lesser worth simply because they love who they love. I think it's great that the JRPG community on TH-cam has a person like you here to help them feel included, welcomed, and safe. I love the content and I instantly subscribed after finding these videos, please keep up all the great work and I sincerely wish the best for both you and your husband going into this new year.
