    I was just playing Atelier Ryza and the trophies screen showed 47% of players beat the game, much higher than other jrpgs I've played on Playstation. This high persistence of players right to the end, with significant numbers going into the post game, suggests to me they did a good job with the game.

      I felt like Ryza 1 got easier towards the end. Initially every elite monster would instakill me, but by the end I had crafted decent stuff and the final boss wasn't particularly difficult. I will say that after 50 hours or so, there were still crafting things that I didn't understand. It gets pretty complicated for those that are really into it. But I was able to do enough to craft strong armor and weapons.

    I play all RPGs on easy mode now tbh. I've played hundreds and I've done plenty of challenging games so nothing left to prove. I want a good story and time as an adult is already limited so I won't make my game length 3 times longer just to say I beat it on a specific mode. Not worth it for me.

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Speaking of that, it's interesting to realize that the older I get the less patient and tolerant I am about some design decisions of some old RPGs when i turn back to them.
      High random encounter rate, unfair boss difficulty, grindy design almost mandatory to get decent exp or money or both, lack of reasonable save systems or checkpoints so you potentially lose a lot of progress with a game over, etc... Because memory limitations didn't allow the games to offer a ton of content like more recent ones, so the devs needed tactics to artificially extend play time and have you stuck with the game for a longer time, but in a not very purposeful way.
      So since I can see those "tactics" in an adult age, sometimes the limited time isnt the only reason to end game sessions. Sometimes I just get irritated with the unfair grindy game design.

    I had the exact opposite experience with FFXII. Purchased it for ps2, went all the way to the final boss with not much passion (didn't liked the fact that the characters were basically the same in terms of gameplay), got owned 5 times straight, realized i had to grind and never finished it. Then 6 months ago i've played the Zodiac Age version, loved it to death for the fact that characters now play differently thanks to the job system they implemented and i've finished the game without much trouble, including most of the optional content except the two strongest optional bosses.

    • @logiclunacy606
      @logiclunacy606 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The optional content for XII is so tough. People always complain that FF12 is automatic but all the gambits have a delay so when it comes to a lot of the late content you you actually need to input everything yourself because you will get trashed and even when you input everything yourself the secret bosses are extremely difficult.

Now in Newgame+ they give you more seasons, and they are all above the max level that you ended the first game with, and the only thing that gives you enough experience to continue to level up is going into these seasons where every monster can kill you in three shots. I take my revenge by going back to the early areas where everything is level 3.

    For me Code Vein is the game I can think of that I rage quit on. The name of the boss I couldn't beat was Mido IIRC. I tried about 15 times using different builds and equipment sets and could not get past him. He can one shot you if you aren't a tanky build and two-three hits kills you normally while he takes like 400 hits to kill. Grinding doesn't help since Code Vein is a Souls clone. I just gave up and admitted that I couldn't "git gud" enough to beat the game.

      But in some cases of old basic games, that's really a tactic to artificially boost the grinding part and extend play time. Same thing about high random encounter rates. Same about limited saves in dungeons, to make you potentially lose a lot of progress after a game over. Because they couldn't offer a lot of true content due to the consoles' memory limitations.

  • @NeutralGloomBot

    As some who used to hate action rpgs because "wah wah too hard and frustrating" lol, just play Bloodborne/Dark Souls once and take the time in the beginning to not rush through everything but learn how to read enemy movements, dodge, block, and parry. Its so rewarding once you get it down and it doesn't take that long. When I finally tried to get into Bloodborne it took me all of three days to "get" the combat but you have to want to. If you can even get halfway through a DS game, something like FFVII R is going to feel like a cakewalk even on hard mode. Its worth it imo to learn new styles of gameplay because it opens up a lot of other experiences rather than boxing yourself into just one style of one genre. I still love turn based games and easier action games, but I can't lie soulslikes now that I get them are probably my new favorite genre. Its just nice to feel like actually had to try to beat a boss instead just phoning it in on easy mode to just "get through it quickly".

    I boredom-quit FF7 Remake. Like you said, the bosses take forever to get through, but I was fine with that at first. I went through the Airbuster battle with a huge smile on my face. But it was after that when the sheer padding became apparent. The section after the church where Cloud and Aerith roof hop to Sector 5? That was over in a couple of minutes in the original. The same section in Remake was a whole 1-2 hours with no additional story content. Then after the plate collapse you have to go to the underground lab instead of, you know, rushing to save your friend. And at this point I remember thinking "Oh, God, I still have Shinra Tower to do", only THEN you have to go through the sewers a second time for Hat Guy, and just as you reach your objective a monster steals the key and I noped out.

    I'm not the sharpest knife of the kitchen, but I am surprised I beat Ryza. My strategy is focusing in using the best bombs that i could make with all the debuff traits i could get. Ryza 1 has some items that actually gets buffs depending on the character position, then i assigned items with the effects the other party members usually ask to trigger their extra actions, and focus with all my might to stun the enemy, then proceed to smash with the best skills and the super skill of Lent. Then i spammed status effects with Tao, that is a beast when you use his speed to spam items and gather the AP points (he's even faster in Ryza 2).
    Son my strategy was controlling Tao mostly, Ryza with some items, and Lent with raw dmg and atk debuff if i remember. I even wrote my plan because the system isn't designed to make plans in the battle, but more for previous preparation.

    How interesting to recognize so many familiar titles.
    1. FF7 Remake--managed to finish main story on normal mode and do all the side-quests (Chadley's reports, mini-games, battle simulator, etc.). Did some grinding with chapter select and 3x XP boost to max out party as far as they were able to go in preparation for Hard mode. Made it to final boss on Hard mode (Arbiter of Fate) and cannot win; put game on back burner. Also tried and failed at battle simulator where you fight a gauntlet against all the summons + Pride & Joy and got my ass kicked before I even made it to Bahamut. Finished intergrade (Yuffie) campaign easily enough but when I attempted Weiss, I got destroyed in less than 10 seconds. Game has been on back burner since and no telling when--or if--I'll give it another go.
    2. Persona 5 Strikers--This was one of my favorite games of all time I've ever played. I will wholeheartedly agree the final boss is a royal pain in the ass but for me, it was during the game's Merciless/Risky mode where even max level party members with max stats and equipped with their best gear were put through the wringer for 30 minutes and it was even more aggravating when I had to do it all over again (Painful Past + fight) to earn a certain weapon. Don't get me wrong, the game was great but my God were some moments aggravating to the point of rage quitting.

    It's probably redundant to say "skill issue" at this kind of video, but the amount of blaming the devs on the FF7R portion of this video warrants it. Hell House was also my deal breaker. I rage quit the first time in 15 years because of this boss. When I activated a limit break and a summon, the boss changed phase and cancelled both attacks. This happened a few times more on different attempts, and nah, I just turned off the game. It took a lot not to throw the disc out the window. I believe Square Enix is lazy with their boss design- just damage sponges with 10 or more health bars of staggering bs.

    I dont want to be one of those people, and i say this with no ill will or rudeness, but it seems like you may not be fully engaging with the games' mechanics. FF7R is not a hack n slash. It takes constant strategization and switching of party members to hit enemy weak spots. Hell House can be incredibly difficult though and is by far my least favorite boss. Oddly enough, on my first playthrough I beat it first try with few issues. Then my 2nd playthrough I hit a brick wall and it took probably 10 tries. Also, narrative wise, Hell House is a big moment in the game. Makes sense for it to be a long, challenging apex. I never felt that battles last too long.
    Atelier requires you to completely learn and understand the alchemy system, which is very confusing and intimidating at first. Takes a long time to get it. But once you do, you can create the stronger equipment that you need. And like FF7, you have to be constantly paying attention, watching HP and switching party members

    FF tactics.
    It really needed some q&a before release. I have no issue with a game being hard, but you dont start a game "that hard" in a certain mission AND add in two other missions who are bizarrely hard and reqs reloading and "preparation" and then bizarrely , suddenly towards the later part of the story , you get a character that is so OP that he 1 shot everything and is beyond broken AND you get tons of other op characters, which makes the game SUPER EASY ...its like "HELLO"?! did you even beta test this shit? There seem to have been no balancing whatsoever in the game, which make sense, for years we thought casters req turns to use spells was "balancing" which is reasonable seeing how powerful they are... only to later find out from Matsunos mouth himself, no, it was the game req loading to play the animation file and had nothing to do with balancing. ???? once again, "OKAY"... the game is a classic and has a fantastic story with a fantastic cast of characters, and easily a 9/10 imo, but the gameplay is just not there, because of "balancing issues". As I said, you want the game to be hard, then dont make it super easy suddenly toward the later part of the game. You gain nothing from scaring away newcomers by having the game being 10x as hard at the start.

      I think FFT is a kinda tricky to judge. It's not that straight up hard, but it's among the more complex srpgs. And srpgs tend to work in a way that they demand more harshly (than other rpg subgenres) that you dive deeply into its mechanic. Only then you start to maneuver well. They are overall among the complex types of games in the rpg spectrum. The spatial factor make the unit movements a vital part of the battle. Not to mention some srpgs having perma-death.
      So if you are willing to learn the FFT mechanics very seriously, then you will be rewarded with the capacity to play it very well and smoothly. The challenge will be there, but if that complex system is conquered everything will become seriously smooth.
      Now getting into the actual game difficulty: FFT's challenge progression gives a lot of plain story battles of constant difficulty, as preparations so there is time to get used to the system... and then throw an extremely hard battle. I don't find that approach unfair at all, but I must say a few of those hard battles are too much. But anyways they are few...
      Also FFT has cpu control, chars with exclusive job abilities, Orlandu (he deserves to be mentioned separately), a customizable special ability system with a strong potential to be exploited for whoever takes the time to learn it, etc etc. To me those are decent compensations.

  • @TheBlackSeraph
    @TheBlackSeraph ปีที่แล้ว

    Couldn't agree with you more of FF7Remake (or as I call it FF7 Regret). The bosses were HP sponges, the game actively disincentivises you from grinding, the weapon upgrade system was ripped from FF13 which makes no sense in universe. In combat, your allies' limit gauge charges about 1/3 as fast as your own, so you're expected to regularly switch characters in battle even if you don't enjoy playing as them. Somehow, the Chakra mechanic for Tifa made less sense each time I read the one paragraph explanation, making my favourite FF7 character unfun to play. And pretty much most new story element added to the plot sucked.
    Yet despite all of that, I beat the game, and maybe would have given it another chance in the future had I not received a notice telling me that certain features were locked behind Hard Mode, which I only NOW had the opportunity to select. Spending 70hrs on a game I'd stopped enjoying long ago only to be told I'd have to play a worse version of the game again to get the full experience killed any remaining sympathy I had for this game.

    Something that I have never liked is when they add things that are only obtained when you finish the game such as weapons or armor, I bought the star ocean and searching on the internet where to farm the materials to make the best weapons I found out that they are only obtained when you finish the game. game or killing the final boss. I mean why? Maybe it has multiple endings so it would be worth getting those weapons for a new game+ and seeing each story, but no, it doesn't. You have the best weapon when you have already killed everything in the game IS STUPID!!!.

    That ending though...
    Okay, as promised, my story behind Trails in the Sky...
    I had been told by multiple friends the games were very in-depth with world building so I gave them a shot. I had no idea what I would be in for that first game... I went in thinking, "I'm gonna do my damnedest to get EVERYTHING! WITHOUT A GUIDE!" Welp... 20 hours in I had excused myself of being told I had missed several side quests at least twice because it really just is a very different mindset than I was used to, since unlike many RPGs NPCs actually have whole arcs you can easily miss... and evil levels of hidden content if you're not just talking to everyone and doing everything. Got frustrated the third time I was told I had missed a good deal of content I wanted to see by the time I got to Zeiss, and I decided "I can't live with myself having 'finished' the game without having given what everyone heralds about this game an honest try." That was the boiling point, I raequit the game. This was mid-ish 2018.
    In late 2018, I'd had several fits and starts without a guide none of which lasted more than an hour or two (everything was calling my name at that time, this was the start of my bundle supremacy arc, if you will, and I had literally hundreds of different games calling for my attention, a lot of my favorite newer games got discovered during this time, whether they're my favorites NOW is another matter, but chiefly Yakuza O got a Steam release during this time and that trumped ALL). So after a time, I just gave up on playing without a guide. I do a final attempt before the one that finished. This one lasts all of 10 hours. I am following the guide thoroughly and to the letter... but Trails games' structures are relatively restrictive so even THEN I miss stuff. By the time I was 10 hours in and at Ruan, it turns out I had missed three collectibles, several BP-crucial choices (a thing I still didn't quite get with those games, but is now as intuitive as making a sandwich now that I'm halfway through Cold Steel III), AND I had missed at least two hidden sidequests, one which I had gotten in a the first attempt at a playthrough, somehow!
    That was the final straw. I was just... DONE with Trails at that point. I wanted to experience it in that way, but clearly I was not geared to think of RPGs in the fashion a close to or absolute completionist run (for what's possible) takes. I'm so, so glad it didn't end there.
    Late 2020 comes around. A friend I was very, very close to at the time and was a fellow streamer decided to be an absolute pal. We started with the Steam Ys games, we voiced pretty much EVERYTHING, and after we only had Ys IX left, which wasn't out yet on PC (don't have a PS4/5, only have an XB1). At first said friend was a little iffy about going through Trails, but we were doing it at a pace of one 4-ish hour stream a week. Needless to say this took a LONG time. We only missed a few weeks, ever, and in... I think it was March or April of 2022 I convinced him that now that we were out of Ys games... we should start Trails in the Sky. We did so and finished First Chapter by late August 2021, Second Chapter by Jan 3rd, 2022, The 3rd by June. We started on a playthrough of Ys IX but unfortunately, a number of factors unrelated to what we were doing with that in our relationship meant that I never finished Ys IX with him. Haven't really talked to that person since November. Would have loved to continue but that's life, the weekly Ys/Trails outings had a hell of a good run. We were generally very thorough and as a result I practically took it upon myself to become an encyclopedia of Trails. Without those playthroughs with my former friend I probably would have finished it eventually... but I certainly wouldn't have such a relationship with the series.
    Just before that relationship came to an end, Trails from Zero released. I still had my love for Trails and I played the Steam version at launch. It turns out the Steam versions of the latest entries have sold criminally low, despite nothing particularly being wrong with them. Tragedy. Ah well, that's the versions I played. The ones with Durante's full set of enhancements. I started playing through this, found it so terminally slow to get going and so many other things got my attention at the time that after a few months I put it on hold until March. I've been blasting through the games since then, finishing Zero in mid March, Azure in April literally the day before my birthday(!), Cold Steel I in mid May, and Cold Steel II at the end of August (what a low point for the series, still loved it, but DAMN...). I still maintain my reverence for attempting to talk to everyone and do everything as much as I can possibly tolerate to do so. I am always thorough as sin, and it's BECAUSE of those 2022 playthroughs that I was always hold this mentality to Trails. I take my sweet time. I savor the setting and everyone's little side stories that are totally missable, because you never know when one will surprise you. Trails, by and away is my favorite franchise of all time, it's not even a contest. Who knows, maybe I'll be like Erick and Trails will only slightly edge out Persona by the time I've played them all. Time shall tell!

    Radiata stories is a surprise, i dont remember having trouble with bosses aside pos game, guess i just cheesed it with items to boost special attack and gone full blast.
    Chrono cross i dont remember any boss really pushing my buttons outside optional ones, my party was always beef characters and i learned to use my stamina the right way, since as you said we cant over level, i knew i was doing something wrong, like my dumbass was getting my ass hand to me on legend of legaia because i did not knew that spirit was defend, so i saw the bosses calling a big attacking and never defending against it, until i used spirit and it reduced the damage by a lot.
