I have a planter pond on my deck, it holds 65 gallons. I'm in Minnesota, the previous 2 years I have brought my 4 goldfish indoors, this year I'm leaving them out because they stink. I purchased a floating heater that keeps a hole in the ice and I run an aerator as well. What I'm worried about is the -10 degree days we get here. Do you think it could freeze solid with those 2 measures in place? Thanks.
We’ve never tested it so not quite sure. But definitely don’t use an energy efficient heater because it won’t keep up. You would need a 1200 watt heater to have any chance to keep them alive. Keep us posted, I’m curious to see what happens. Thanks!!
Hahaha, Yes it's true, you need airration in the pond for good groth in the summer. But live fish allways needs filtration. so DON'T stop your filter, you wil kill all youre bacteria. Stop the pond from friezing, you can better cover your pond and thus removing the wind from the water. Cold water contains more air than warm water. When air is low in winter the youre pond is over stocked!
Never cover your Pond. Thats very bad, because your pond needs the Light from the sun. And in the winter 24/7 let the filter and flow running... I have a very big pond with 1000 koi in it with very strong flow that the water Will stay open

Is the pond heated? The koi don’t mind the cold?
No, they hibernate near the bottom just like all fish during the cold winter months.

@@roepieroepie5333 correct: a pond needs light, but the cover that I mean is from transparant plastic like polycarbonate plates.
