I am in possession of pretty ancient coins. One of them dates back to Greco-Bactrian times of Kushan empire (almost 1800 years old). Some of them are from the early Muslim conquests of India; ghaurid dynasty and Delhi sultanate.(almost a 1000 years ago). I have washed them with tap water and further cleaned them with a mixture of vinegar and salt. The original colours are pretty much showing but the Kushan coin and another one has the copper oxide (green coloured) deposition on them. I have since placed them in olive oil. How long should they be put in olive oil?

I have AU 1863-S half eagle which as you know is truly a rare coin. I sent it in to NGC and was surprised that it came back as scratched in the right obverse field. What they are calling a scratch can only be seen at a certain angle and in a certain light. At best it is just a faint line on the mint luster. What do you suggest?

If they call it scratched then the scratch is big enough not to be market acceptable

That kind of rubbing with a Q-tip is NOT recommended, unless you want all your coins to be labeled "CLEANED" and devalued. If you examine your coins now you will see the hairlines you have introduced.

The Morgan looks cleaned already. Do you have a coins that you “ restored” that does look like an MS grade?

what's this 'ms70' you're using to clean? I search and it only comes up with the coin grade ms70, no solvent

You’re improperly cleaning these coins. OBVIOUSLY you’re removing dirt but you’re also leaving behind hairline scratches. You’re polishing these coins and removing the original luster.

does leaving having a coin in a pvc bag for 2-3 days ruin it? WOuld one have to clean it or is it okay? How would you reccomend cleaning?

Better to roll the qtips across the coin with ms70 then to rub....because qtips can scratch surfaces...

Hard to watch without noticing no gloves, and fingered adding contaminants to the coin.

The 1888 O is a bit more Rare , Please be careful , If it comes back Cleaned Details you Lost the Value of even Grading it . Personally I think the best advice is to Never clean a coin .

Is there a Facebook group for coin collectors or any online platform for purchasing and selling of coins?

The only thing you should do to silver coins is dip them. Use olive oil on corrosion. Use acetone to remove tape, and use coin dip to remove toning. PVC damage should be removed with acetone.

Thanks for the input, but there are multiple other “safer” methods for circulated coinage
