  • Welcome to Auto Chatter! Todays episode is about the Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis. I will also discuss the Mercury Marauder! These body on frame cars were the last of their breed, and have a enduring legacy that is worth chatting about. I do hope you enjoy it. Considering giving me a like if so , and subscribing and checking out some of my other videos too! Thank You!

    They kept the fleet sales because Cops, and to a lesser degree Taxi drivers, are notorious for beating cars to death, and a 'BOF' car can take far more of this abuse than a unibody can. That's why so many LE departments now drive SUV's of which most are still 'BOF' even with their poor cornering and high-speed handling compared to a car. Worth mentioning is that for some years the Crown Vic was known as a 'Cop killer' due to the gas tank impacting the rear differential housing in a rear-end collision ripping the tank open. Sound familiar? Think "Pinto". For a couple years Ford offered an optional tank shield then made it standard. If you have one of these check for that, and get one from a junkyard if yours doesn't have it. Some of the smaller PD's ran the smaller engines and street racing types could outrun those, but the 5.8 Interceptor gained a reputation for having enough power to catch most cars.
    There's a lot of Crown Vic car clubs still around but those are waning as these cars disappear due to time. There's still some interest in the Interceptor engines which can be retrofitted to many cars which never had a 5.8 engine from the factory and they can be tuned for some respectable horsepower figures. But like these big old cars, the big old engines are falling from favor as technology lets you go just as fast with smaller more efficient engines in the lighter cars we have now. I can't speak of civilian sales beyond noting that the longer the model went the fewer of those I saw on the road, and there were more Mercury's in that category than Fords. Never too many of either as most people finally realized that they don't need big cars and their lesser fuel mileage with so many other choices better meeting their needs. They were the last of the dinosaur cars and TBH I'm surprised they went as long as they did.

      Excellent post as usual! Yeah...Its not surprising you saw more non fleet models as Grand Marquis... Crown Vics were mainly fleet cars saleswise by the 21st century. But yeah..The BOF RWD platform is a recipe for reliabilty and durability....
      Not that a Camry can't go the distance too! Even the 300s and Chargers that don't have a 2.7 in them, can be seen with some miles on them...But I dont think they hold up like a Crown Vic or Caprice did.

    • @P_RO_
      @P_RO_ 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@autochatter Several local LE agencies tried the Caprice but ended up going all Crown Vic for it's better reliability and because the officers driving them liked them a lot better. The Highway Patrol here runs mostly Chargers now but they still have a Camaro or two around. Counties and cities are going to all SUV's as their old cars run out of life.
      Funny thing was that even unmarked, it was easy to spot Cops when they exclusively ran Crown Vics because almost nobody else drove that style of car. Now with the variety and the very low profile light bars or hidden blues, it has become tough to spot Cop cars at a distance and you can rule out any Crown Vic types you see.

    • @autochatter
      @autochatter  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @P_RO_ I've talked with several Cops over the years (my Sister is one). There's some that preferred the Caprices (may have been faster?). The Chargers don't seem to hold up nearly as well. But yeah spotting a cop is harder now..Might be in a Tahoe or a Explorer now days.

    You did a great job. I watched it twice. I liked how you explained the name change in the 1980's from LTD to LTD Crown Victoria and then Crown Victoria. I liked the footage and the photos and how you explained everything. I did want to mention Mercury Grand Marquis LSE. That had bucket seats and a floor shifter. Ford had a version too with Crown Victoria LX Sport. They had to do something with the sport suspension. I recall the Touring Sedan from 1992 as well. There was a version in the Middle East with a Town Car interior called Grand Marquis GSE. The nice looking LTD Crown Victoria was the update in 1988. The 1992-1997 Grand Marquis was really nice looking especially loaded. By the end it looked cheap and dated like the Oldsmobile Ciera did. It had lost its glamour. I liked how you explained the transition from Fairmont to Granada to LTD to Taurus. Excellent. Ford did something right with the Panther platform where GM made a few mistakes long the way( diesels, downsizing in the 80's). I laughed when you mention the Parisienne. I liked the 1975-1978 Grand Marquis too. The LTD from that time was not bad looking either. They had that Lincoln type design. Yes, Ford did some of the same as you said with the clones. Thank you again.

    I had a 1990 Grand Marquise. I bought it used in 1994. It was the biggest piece of junk I ever owned. This car was a fight right from the start. From the sale. To the end of it's many repairs. Long story short. The previous user was a salesman and the car was rarely serviced. Thus the engine was shot. And ended having to be replaced. That took 3 weeks. Then the car was deemed unsafe to drive. Why?? Seems the weight of the engine was holding the steering together. It disintegrated when the engine was pulled. Then there was the fight getting the car back. I traded it in about a week later on a 1993 Escort. I never made payment one on this car.
