Hi👏🏾 I am going to winterize my garden very soon. I am in 7A NY. This season was not very productive due to LOW & NO RAIN! I did get some harvest for saving seeds but not enough for canning. I have a dilemma to get over….. using Tap Water to water my garden when I have hard water. I learned that Hard Water makes roots basically waterproof over time and plants will not be able to absorb water. This is making me a little crazy ESPECIALLY when the rain is little to none! YES … I do have rain barrels for collecting rain water and I have started adding more barrels around my garden to collect more water whenever it does rain… All suggestions and ideas are welcome.
Hi 👋🏾! Sorry to hear your season wasn’t very productive. I don’t have a suggestion because I’m not well versed in the topic but I will pin your post in hopes that someone can help!
@@ms.bshomestead7661 I’m 8a zone. Had to protect my garden from triple digit heat. As far as hard water anyone hear of adding plain epsom salt to the water?
@@cspotentials1018 I have not tried it but I have heard that the minerals in epson salt is good for gardening.. Keep looking into it. I have too much minerals in my water…🤣🤣🤣
I thinned my carrots and replanted last year. The best thing to do is make sure the whole is deep enough to fit the entire root straight down in the hole without bending. I achieved this with a dibber or a spade. The dibber pushes straight down making a perfect hole. the spade worked to push the soil over to one side when you push it straight down and fit the carrot in the space, then let the soil fill back in around the carrot. Some were perfect and grew without any weird deformity but I picked them too early so they didn’t get very big😂😂
I put thick mulch under my strawberries in early spring and I plant carrots in my strawberry bed in the fall. It works so good for me. I do replant my carrots. An old man said to thin and replant them at night. It works… I guess because it reduces the transplant shock
I'm in Virginia too! Your channel is great because I'm a beginner home gardener (I've worked for a market gardener but it is so different than doing your own thing at home). Thank you for continuing to show up ❤
I love watching. After watching the news, your music calms me, and then your common sense optimism restores balance. Here in AK, the garden is already covered in 4 in of snow, but tomatoes are still ripening indoors. I tried garden bags this year and they were a success. Definitely will use them for carrots in the future. ❤
Awwww thank you! O wow, you already have snow?!? Happy to hear you still have a bit of summer inside. O yay! I’m happy to hear that. It’s been my most successful way of growing!
Yes, you can replant the thinned carrots! Actually, I start mine from seed in a deep pot and when the fronds start growing, I transplant those in the garden/larger containers. If you make carrot pesto, blend it with other herbs because it could be pretty strong in flavor. Try mixing with basil and/or spinach leaves. They are definitely good to save and use in making broth as Angela Muhammad said below!
I did some cleaning of my garden bed yesterday. Also, I planted the giant red mustard greens and the rainbow swiss chard that I found at another nursery. I had to pull my tomatoes but on the bright side I had quite a few green tomatoes for my mother-in-law to be able to make some homemade fried green tomatoes to go another with dinner. I took some cuttings from the plant and I'm gonna try to see if I can make starts out of them and keep them during the winter and get ahead start for spring. I had seen it on another video so hopefully it works. I also have to get ready to start getting my pepper plants ready for me to overwinter them. Yesterday I had saved the seeds from a lot of the shishito peppers that I had saved throughout the season. Cracking open those peppers made me wish I had used them for a pepper seasoning which is something I'm gonna do next year. They smelled so good.
Hey Asia, they say it's best to burn holes in the fabric instead of making cuts. Because the fabric taters at the edges you create with cuts. I have experienced it in my garden as well. Love your videos ❤😊
Things are growing nicely. I have to thin carrots as well. I pulled up some nice sized sweet potatoes yesterday. Only 11 lbs but I’m thankful. I still have 5 sweet potato plants in the ground but soil is not so good there. I have better luck with them in bags. Your strawberries really showed out this year. You gave me an idea with the weed barrier. Thinking about thinning my strawberries as well. It was 35 degrees in Central Alabama this morning! Burrrr! I enjoyed this video, thanks for sharing. 😊
Thank you! O yay! Any harvest is a good one in my opinion. Hopefully you’ll get a good harvest on the plants that are left as well! O happy to hear that. It literally just popped up in my head. I’m always thinking about my garden lol. Yikes! It was probably close to that here. I’m not ready for the cold weather at all lol. Thank you and you’re welcome!
Your strawberry patch is great! I have a stubborn grassy weed in my strawberry patch. I removed all of the plants & put down landscape fabric down for 2 months. Some of those weeds still came thru.
I really want to try strawberries again this next year. I have not had any luck with them but I keep trying. My Grandpa always grew the prettiest strawberries so I am determined to have some!!
Sending you good vibes on next year’s planting. Strawberry plants like moist soil. Mine are in a slightly shady spot too. Not sure that has anything to do with how much they produced and reproduced this year though.
I sure wish I was in VA to get some of those strawberries!!!! If you wanna wrap some of the roots in wet paper towels and then a sandwich baggie and put them in the ups priority mail boxes, I would surely cashapp you the money for the postage!!!! Also I have never thinned and replanted carrots, I let some go to seeds and the fell on the ground and were growing everywhere and I moved them to my Greenstalk and a few survived and a few didn’t . I guess if they had the will to live they did…LOL Thx 4 sharing Asia!!
Hey Asia, thanks for the inspiration to transition my Virginia garden over to the fall/winter season. I'm loving the boon of new content on the page! As for me, my peppers still look unbothered by the cold nights, so I'm currently fighting the urge to pull those up for more fall crop space.
@@YellowDoorUrbanHomestead Also, I’m old ( ish ) 😉 and gardening for myself has been a struggle. Seeing your carefree approach has encouraged me to keep going.

Hi Asia, I did try to use carrot tops in my salads. It was fine. I want to try to do a pesto. ( though I am not really a fan of regular pesto. Interesting way to thin strawberry plants . Can’t wait to see how it works.😋
Your strawberry bed cleaned up nicely. I do hope it will get under control for you. I am so excited to see what you're doing with the carrots, I never thought about that either, so I will definitely try and replant the ones removed. Thank you for showing that.

Hahaha I love how the number of holes and plants you get to keep kept increasing. It’s not easy to let the plants go😂😂😅
I’ve never used my carrot top in pesto. I usually freeze them with other veggie scraps to add to making my vegetable broth.
O ok. That’s a good idea too! Thank you for the comment!
I've never thinned carrots, only the strongest will survive 😂😂
Brilliant, I'm going to do exactly the same thing with my very overgrown strawberry bed! thank you!

Using torch is easier and it will eliminate the weed cloth from ruffling.
