    The United Earth Directorate was spying on the Koprulu Sector long before the Brood War took place. My personal belief, backed up by some conjecture by developers, is that the UED relied on copies of Koprulu Sector tech during the Brood War, so they could more easily resupply given that they were so far from Earth.

    • @liljenborg2517
      @liljenborg2517 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Some of the convicts shipped to the Koprulu sector may have also included naval personnel who knew the ships and their flotilla may have had military escorts that, once the convicts transformed into "colonists" ended up in the hands of the "local authorities". In other words the UED ships didn't look surprisingly like Confed or Dominion ships, rather the Confed ships were based on designs copied from the UED ships.
      But I also think you're right. There are more than a few hints that the UED had kept tabs on Koprulu, almost using them as some sort of social/military experiment (Given how much Star Craft is ripping off so many other sci-fi franchises, why not rip off the Sardakaur from Dune?)

      Would also help to disguise their force since the ships are almost identical to the naked eye. Only way to know would be transponders or markings on the hull.

      @TheAnon03 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good point, Doran Routhe (who was probably Narud) had ATLAS monitoring the sleeper ships that colonized the sector, it's quite possible that these monitoring systems remained operational even after the the ships were dismantled to build the new colonies. That said it's unlikely that he would have willingly shared that information or access to those systems with anyone else.

    Considering how varied the BC's are in Starcraft 2 I find it likely that the Terran BC of the Koprulu sector was based on the aesthetic of the old Earth BC's and maybe a few knowns however the actual design was done more or less from scratch.

  • @casbot71
    @casbot71 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Off topic, but seeing the mention of how shields were limited by reactor power, what were the limitations on shield strength in Star Trek?
    Could you just fit larger warp cores/reactors and extra shield emitters to scale up shields even more - what was the bottleneck?
    The EPS grid would have to be reinforced, but that's just a case of laying extra cables ect??
    And was there a performance effect on the ship, besides overall power demands and the power being diverted from other systems?
    With armour there is always the limiting factor or weight and the thickness taking up space. So you need to balance it against speed and the loss of room for other components like the firepower.
    But with shields is there significant mass and space taken up.?
    Or could you take a old Miranda class, strip out the saucer section of all amenities and so forth, stick in the largest reactors that can fit and reinforce the wiring, add new state of the art shield emitters and create a tank that can shrug off photon torpedoes.
    Would it make sense (except from a logistical perspective) to shoehorn in the largest warp core that you could stick in the hull in any ship for the boost.
    And does the same reasoning apply to Star Wars ships (although a ISD's reactor appears to be a major part of its mass and internal (ahem) volume).
    Star Trek the warp cores are pretty small and light, and the support engineering could be scaled up.
    Could you even stick a Intrepid core in a Nova class ship [the Equinox episodes went very different].

    They had access to the designs because of what was basically a mad scientist scheme. The short version is the prisoner ships were modified (as well as the people on board if I remember right) so they could establish colonies quickly and easily once they reached where they were going. However they missed their target and ended up in the Koprulu sector by mistake.
    I know wikis aren't the most reliable sources of information but here's a link: starcraft.fandom.com/wiki/Doran_Routhe As most of the sources are Q&As and a timeline included in one of the books this should be taken with a grain of salt.

    Regarding the database, the original 'Crew' in cold sleep were originally supposed to function as a penal colony, they were only supposed to set up the basic infrastructure.
    They having weapons design, kind of makes sense, since they would be guards, and UPL would want to have the ability to defend the colony after the real colonist arrived.
    However it could be argued that the UED only used a design that was made to look like the Terran version, as a type of cover.

  • @alexfranz817
    @alexfranz817 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I had always assumed that the core chassis was carried over from the UED but the exact technology that operated it was somewhat different. By the time the two ships met each other in combat they were roughly equivalent in capabilities.
    I also assumed that the new units that showed up in broodwar like the Valkyrie were brought over by the UED and the technology was quickly stolen or copied. At that point there would have been much more infighting and intrigue in Kaprulu than in UED space making the dominion much better at spy-craft, especially considering the guerrilla war tactics that they came into power through.

  • @ZontarDow
    @ZontarDow 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There is a possibility that it looks similar due to them remembering what it looked like and making a similarly shaped vessel since they know that design works so it removes part of the effort needed to make one of their own, similar to how the Soviets, China and Iran did/do copy American designs despite not having access to the schematics.

    A area of lore that hasn't been explored, *Blake's 7.*
    They have some interesting ships (besides the Liberator, although that should be #1) and a IP that is well laid out. There's a technical manual that gives good detail.
    And while the original model shots are varied in quality - from nice artwork to models that you can actually see the string holding them up!, there are also modern CGI recreations.
    Now, how much Space 1999 have you done? the Eagle and the Hawk along with the Long range probe. The universal detachable cockpit is a nice concept and the Eagles detachable main module could be seen as inspiration for the Federation's Runabout.
    The Eagles Flatpack assembly was a obvious inspiration for Voyagers shuttle bay - with the ability to build replacements.

    I'm not sure if you ever covered this but...
    I was rewatching DS9 S7E6 - Treachery, Faith, and the Great River where Weyoun 6 tried to defect to the Federation by surrendering to Odo. Now I know how much you covered the fall of Federation principles through In Pale Moonlight, but I'm not sure if you touched upon the same subject on the Dominion. By this point, they were losing the war, desperate, and the Cardassians were becoming disillusioned with their alliance with hints that Demar assassinated Weyoun 5. And with Weyoun 6 so disappointed that his own bloodline was tainted with a defective, he was willing to have Odo, a Changeling who the Vorta consider Gods, to be killed. We saw fractures, and I wonder how this would affect their future operations.

    • @jaewoo123

      never explicitly mentioned but i think theyre meant to be guns attached to a winglet. no animation exist of them being used to fire though, and the umojan variant makes them beefier to better emphasize the winglet role. the mira's marauders variant replaces them with giant knives (no joke).
      also i'm not sure nacelle means what you think it means, its typically more in reference to engine housings that are separate from the fuselage so just the outer shell of a jet engine). given that the winglets don't house any engines, not sure we can call them nacelles

    I find the Terran Battlecruiser to be a poor design. In almost all iterations its reliance on burst laser armaments for both AtS & AtA have been its undoing. Especially since the Terrans already have 2 off-the-shelf, modular weapon systems already available that don't have such high energy demands & are far more effective for their respective roles.
    I'm talking, of course, about the Thunderbolt missile system, & Arclite siege cannon. Thunderbolt missiles are long-ranged, cheap to produce & cheaper to field than burst lasers, while the advantage of an aerial-mounted siege cannon against ground targets are obvious.

    • @dianavespid937
      @dianavespid937 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TrollOfReason Its like Star Wars and the ISD, laser cannons are a fraction of a turbolaser in terms of energy consumption. They could trade a single turbolaser for dozens of laser cannons and fighters wouldn’t be such a pain in the butt.
