      It’s because they knew Apollo didn’t beat him. Tony said in the first film that he’s a southpaw and that you have to do everything in reverse. Tony knew that Rocky was a real threat to Apollo in the rematch. When Rocky was punching the meat in the first movie you could tell Tony was afraid for Apollo

      It's also damn accurate. Apollo was an incredible boxer, with flawless technique and smarts for the sport. Rocky was just pure iron will. Tony knows how pissed Apollo is here, and he knows if they fight him again, Apollo won't be smart, he'll try and match him will for will... and its the ONLY place Rocky is Apollo's superior.

      Note, in the first Rocky, Tony's character immediately recognized that Balboa was the wrong person to mess with. Apollo was looking at a list of potential challengers, picked out Balboa, after a few seconds of looking at his credentials, he replied to Apollo, "he's a southpaw. I don't like you messing with southpaws."

      +Margaret Tudor He's doing exactly what Mickey did in Rocky III by trying to keep Apollo up on top for as long as possible until he goes down or retires. The longer Apollo is up, the more cemented in history he becomes and the better he'll be able to look after his family.

    • @Crichjo32
      @Crichjo32 8 ปีที่แล้ว +138

      He's also doing what Rocky tries to do in IV, which is trying to talk Apollo out of challenging Drago. But Apollo has too much pride he doesn't back down on both occasions, losing his title in the former, and then his life in the latter.

    • @highjim7778
      @highjim7778 8 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      the thing about this match though is Apollo had Rocky beat quite comfortably on points, wouldve been a lopsided decision win which was an improvement over the split decision in the first fight, his pride caused him to go for the KO in the last round and risk it all.

      I actually always liked Clubber because he was kind of the good guy. He works his ass off, he just wants to be judged on his fighting record and get the shot he deserves as #1 contender, and he knows how to get it ("Hey woman!"). And then it turns out Rocky HAS been ducking him without knowing it! He's basically the same guy Rocky was in the first movie, but meaner.

    • @erictaylor1770

      Dedric There What about Mason Dixon in Rocky Balboa? To me he was the best antagonist because of the vulnerability the character showed!

    • @jasonleetaiwan
      @jasonleetaiwan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +81

      Apollo was not a true antagonist in the story. The first 2 films were more about Rocky trying to figure out who he should be, etc. The conflict is within himself mostly. Apollo was just his opponent who had his own issues being the champion.
      Even Clubber Lang was really just an opponent and not a true antagonist. Outside of pushing Mickey down and giving him his final heart attack, the real problem was that Mickey told Rocky that he had been protecting him by picking fighters he knew he could beat which hurt his self confidence.
      I'd say Drago was the first real antagonist because he actually killed his bff Apollo and wasn't terribly sorry about it. Although you could say he didn't hate Drago anymore after he beat him, but killing the main character's best friend even if it was legal, qualifies him as a true antagonist.
      Then of course in Rocky 5, we had a couple of second rate antagonists. Mr. Washington who took Rocky's protege away with promise of fame and fortune with a red headed hooker to boot, and Tommy Gunn who became an antagonist after the press provoked him into thinking he wasn't a true champion without beating Rocky.
      Anyway, Apollo had many redeeming qualities as a person except for his extreme pride that lost him his title and eventually got him killed. He as a great 3 dimensional character, but definitely not an antagonist for Rocky.

      @erictaylor1770 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      At their best, the Rocky movies had little moments like that: in the locker room before the first fight, when Rocky admits he can't beat Creed but wants it anyway; the argument with Mickey, raging about a prime he never had; Paulie wishing he could get inside Rocky's skin and become him -- until he saw his opponent. When Stallone confined himself to the little moments, he was a remarkable filmmaker.

  • @charliefromstarkvillemissi1852

    Weathers always played Apollo like a real-life boxing champion, not as a movie champion. He’s stylish, urbane, fearless, and cares deeply about his reputation. And he’s not the “bad guy”. He’s Rocky’s opponent (and then later best friend).

    • @happygimly6061
      @happygimly6061 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's another great aspect of this scene. It's telling the audience that yeah Apollo is the antagonist for the movie but you shouldn't hate him. He's gonna make himself seem like you should hate him but only because he's so driven to prove himself. He's a man that would rather have a clean loss after giving everything he had over a hollow victory. Apollo is the real deal and the only reason why Rocky's victory means anything at all is because he's up against the real deal. Apollo is a rival not an enemy.

  • @V4EVega
    @V4EVega 2 ปีที่แล้ว +77

    Duke is so underrated in this series. He was the only one who recognized that Rocky was more dangerous than people thought in the 1st film, and he's the only one who recognizes that going after him again is a disaster waiting to happen. He also sees that beneath the arrogant facade, Apollo is now questioning his own worth just as much as Rocky ever did. Apollo is touted as the greatest fighter (a title he did in fact earn), but a random guy picked as a publicity stunt almost took it all away. He knew from the get go it wasn't going to come down to a decision. It was going to be all or nothing for Apollo, and that thought scared the hell out of Duke coming from a man he saw as his own son.

    This conversation alone built Rocky's character so much that they didn't even need the rest of the movie to do it. You could clearly feel the fear in Tony's voice, and the uncertainty in Apollo's. Damn good acting.

    • @Vydio
      @Vydio ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think Tony had a number of fears. Of course, death in the ring was foremost. But the advisors were saying he could get the same money fighting someone else, maybe to him it was a matter of time to move on. A boxer, as just about any other athlete, has a limited amount of time to be at the top of his game. While Apollo is complaining about fan reaction to his fight against Rocky, another fight could also provoke backlash from other fighters hollering about when are they going to get their shot. Rocky had also been advised not to fight again due to eye damage from their first fight, there is a scene in the movie where Micky shows him he can not see well enough to take on Apollo.

    • @RaytheGrayt
      @RaytheGrayt ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NicholasPeters1 That's true. Tony was scared that Rocky would eventually overcome the odds because he already showed doing it in the first fight. I also think Tony was scared that even if Apollo were to win again, it wouldn't be any easier than it was the first time because he barely beat Rocky. It would make confirm suspicion that Apollo was a paper champ because in the eyes of the people Rocky's a nobody. He was a nobody, seen as a nobody, treated as a nobody, and laughed at as a nobody. Even by Apollo himself. A nobody going the distance with the world champion is disgraceful enough as it is. They underestimated him, but Tony saw through all of that. It was a facade because only he knew what kind of fighter Rocky was, and how hungry he was. That's what this whole fight was about, it wasn't to win a championship rather something to prove. That's what haunted Apollo, and the fact of him having that much difficulty was shameful. Tony knew that Rocky was a bad match up for Apollo, and eventually the tide was going to overturn. Agree with what you said.
