Composer Missy Mazzoli and her ensemble Victoire have teamed up with Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche, synth producer Lorna Dune and virtuosic vocalists Mellissa Hughes, Martha Cluver and Virginia Warnken (of Roomful of Teeth) to record Mazzoli’s expansive new work, Vespers for a New Dark Age, due out on New Amsterdam Records in March 2015. Over two years in the making, Vespers for a New Dark Age is a brazen interpretation of the vespers prayer service that replaces the customary sacred verses with texts by poet Matthew Zapruder.

We traveled up from Philly to see Victoire live at Carnegie Hall. I would easily do it again and hope to if the group can't make it down our way. Victoire perfectly captured the feel of a Thomas Tallis piece broken, shattered and upended. By the end I felt like I'd been hit in the face with a brick, but in a good way. I also have Victoire's albums to credit for discovered a slew of other talented artists like Eighth Blackbird, Roomfull of Teeth, Nadia Sirota and a host of others on New Amsterdam. I haven't felt music speak to me in this way since I discovered punk rock many, many years ago. Sorry to gush, but it was an amazing experience. Thank you!

Missy Mazzoli is incredible. She has shown us a way forward in music. It's nice to experience something that is at once ancient and classical, but also new and unsettling.
