He was supposed to just mimic to preserve his voice. It wasn't until one of the fans brought up some of Em's personal life that he said fuck it and tore them up.
This was filmed for b roll for the movie. Em was suppose to fake rap them, and vocals would lay down later. Thats why the croud still rreacted even though the mic was off. After the first guy, Em said f that, and decided to retsliate for real. They were real mc's from detroit, and were supposed to just do their shi for the movie, but Em still couldnt let them have a free pass
In the making of the movie, they actually had a contest between all the extras and those 3 were the winners to potentially be used in the movie. In the first battle, he wasnt supposed to rap back which is why is mic was off. He was getting taunted by the crowd and decided to give them something. He was losing his voice near the end of that day which is why his mic was off at the start. Love those deleted scenes.
The production team did a contest and let members from the audience battle B Rabbit. We wasn't even supposed to actually rap but "act" like it, hence this is why the mic was off. I think the crowd was getting a little anxious though. Also, he said that dude was from Ohio because he had a "'Bone-thugs-n-harmony" style.
Under the filming of 8 Mile, they brought in MCs from Detroit in the 313 and Dresden area, and the 8 Mile strip to be a part of this s*** so they could come up and freestyle against Eminem
Very true man, I'm from Detroit and around this time I used to perform at the place called C-Notes where a couple of artist I knew were part of this. The battles were done to kill some time in between filming. There is actually more footage than just this that I have seen.
you should watch the full behind the scenes and react, it's brilliant. They auditioned extras for these battles for the dvd but Em was losing his voice so they muted his mic, but after the first guy he was like "fuck that"
The crowd got bored in between sets and filming shoots. (It took hours) They asked for people to battle Eminem but Eminem wasn’t supposed to speak (save his voice) but the MC in him said f it and people got hurt on that stage lol
So this battles was the way to give people some spirit , the spend so many hours on the room with the smoke and the heat that people was getting bored, the production decided to start a battle rounds and the winning people have the chance to show on the video
The first time I saw the battles, I felt so bad for the chick; but was super impressed that Em gave her a hug at the end. Also, I thought there were 4 not 3 but I could be remembering incorrectly. AND I could swear that in the theatre, these scenes were shown b/c I remember seeing them and wondered what happened to them on the DVD but found them on the extras. Your grandma is amazing! Em fan; respect!
Marv talks about it, most of the extras for the film were local rappers, em made sure they got jobs. This was something they decided to do to keep the moral up and have a bit of fun during the long ass shoots
Yo I love this. This is crazy how have I never seen this. You can't deny his battling skills, like you said there's nothing super crazy epic but the delivery it's awesome 👏
The bonus battles happened bcuz all the extras were just standing around bored between takes. Ig it was taking a long time. So producers decided to pick 3 or 4 ppl from the extras that could battle. The thought was for him to not say shit... He couldn't help it though and we got this classic
Cliff you are currently becoming my joint favourite reactor with my man Knox Hill. You guys are different but both so knowledgeable about hip hop, bars and music in general. Love the breakdowns bro. Now that we're friends I feel comfortable telling you that you are definitely punching WAYYYY above your weight with your girl! 💯😜 Love from Scotland my guy
they were doing this to keep the crowd engaged due to the fact that they were there for 15-16 hour days or something so they asked people from the crowd if they had what it takes to battle and if anyone was any good it may go in the movie
Looks like they got the movie story covered, so let me just say that story about your grandma was really great Cliff. Real origin story shit bro love it
I kept wondering who you remind me of and I finally figured it out. Frank (Charlie Weber) from the tv show "How to Get Away With Murder". Your mannerisms and voice sound like the character in the show.
As a writer and reviewer or hip hop and music in general. I appreciate it if you did a review of lupe fiasco newest song cake. His lyrics are next level and I would appreciate to see the song and lyrics through your eyes. Keep up the good work hope to see the review.
Eminem was saving his voice for his "real" scenes but one of the extras thought he was clever and tried to rip Em for real so Em wasn't going to sit and take that so he turned his mic back on and ripped the extra to shreds, its said that the extra was so embarrassed by his "real" resounding defeat!
This was supposed to be silent with no lyrics footage between the rounds to show that he went through more rounds to get to the finale but it got scrapped for whatever reason and just put in as bonus content. Em wasn't even supposed to rap but after Marv, he changed his mind on that.
They were supposed to add his freestyle later... so he mimicking..cuz of him losing his voice.. but at a point he says fuck it.. turns the mic on... yes.. it was all extra battles in case they needed them.. and mad rappers lined up to be in it..based on look and their battles amongst themselves they wete picked.. also they cut that scene short but u see him smile and hug yhe chick at the end
That is not true, you can see he used the bar "You ain't gon' sell two copies if you press a double album" from the song I still don't give a F.... back in one of his rap batlles way before the song came out. (sorry nerd here 😇)
@realdutchdave yeah he has and that period line was also used it's really not a massive deal. Nowadays probably not but hey I've even heard Harry Mack say the same thing over and over for his fillers and obviously he's thinking because he's a fn animal
None of this was for the movie Eminem just wanted the crowd hyped. So he suggested having mock diss battles with some local talent the director decided to record them for DVD extras.
They held a contest with the extras because they wanted to film extra battles in case they decided to go with that and the people who are battling Eminem are the winners. Also the first one the director wanted him to save his voice because they spent so much time on the battle scenes and he was starting to lose his voice. Also correct was on the 8 mile dvd extras the whole contest and extra battles.
there was meant to be a part in the film like a battle rap montage after he got jumped by the freeworld where he battled his way up, but from a story point its kinda redundant so they cut it
These are the outtakes of when Em was supposed to be silent do to losing his voice, but the crowd at Shelter were detroit locals and were busting on Em for mimic work, so he turned the mic on and began shredding these so called Emcees...
Yo Cliff, just wanted to drop a quick line because I was just listening to it, but people slept on, still sleeping on and I don’t know why, but “Kamikaze” might be his best shit. The word play, lyricism and command of the English language is befuddling on this record. I’m amazed people still argue he’s not the GOAT. The album is insane! I’m gonna miss that fool!
This was better explained on the DVD specials... but you are correct... they needed to entertaint the crowd so they got some underground rappers to freestyle vs Em... but Em's mic was supposed to be off since he was losing his voice... in case they used the battles for the movie they would just do voice overs...
Just 3 or 4 bars is all it takes to finish the competition! Damn! Just 2 bars to slaughter "Confusion!" That is NUTS, like Da Brat! I like Da Brat though. Don't judge me!!! That "Ladies First" reminded me of the Queen and her song "Ladies First." "Oooh ladies first, ladies first." Back when female rappers had CLASS and MORALS!!!
As far as I know, these are outtakes. At that time they were real Mces from Detroit who got the chance to battle against Eminem. and the best ones were shown in the film at the end. Kind regards from Germany
The best view is Marvwon and others from the Detroit area talking about this on Math Hoffa. (th-cam.com/video/Ysb5ynv2AA8/w-d-xo.html) It was a contest and morale thing they were doing one day with a few of the best chosen to "battle" Eminem and shoot footage but faking it with Em's voice ordered to rest. Only Marvwon couldn't take that opportunity for granted, and then if HE was going to rap, Em wasn't going to stand there and NOT respond. So, some of what Em said wasn't caught as he started rapping but had to fiddle to turn on the mic he wasn't supposed to be using. Rules were which stopped first rather than coming to battle for who's best gauged by audience response, making it more of a TKO than a full punch, especially with voice issues affecting Em and a shooting schedule to consider. However, Marvwon rightfully takes pride in "beating" Eminem and acknowledges how that experience changed his life, especially after it came time to highlight features on the DVD that even got him mentioned in a segment on ET. He said his own mother hadn't believed in him succeeding in rap as a real way to make money but after seeing him on TV she changed her mind and started encouraging him. The most important thing is the 3 Detroiters all have nothing but love for Em and make a point to confirm he DOES put money into the city, including by using as many locals as they could during that 8 Mile shoot and paying top dollar as an hourly wage for doing "absolutely nothing but stand around and meet some of the best rappers in the world"! There's a relationship that formed between Marvwon and Em, and it's really lovely to see people who were there to talk about the reality instead of just repeating the race-baited hate of anecdotes and washed-up DJs/rappers turned podcasters driving clicks and eating off Em's name!
All the extras were ppl from Detroit, alot of them were rappers, so they let a few try out, the reason his mic was muted in the beginning was to save his voice, if they neede that battle for the movie they were going to dub his voice in later

She got up and basically face planted in front of Tony Hawk. Not only that but did it free style , not even rehearsed lines like all writers keep in their pocket since Oscar Wilde , she stepped up and was like shot mics on I gotta go . The crowd was as tense as being infront of Eminem . But it’s like the par 25 in Tim cup . Mad love for it !
The director decided to hold a competition with crowd members which the ones that did the battle with Eminem were the ones that won the competition and yes M voice was pretty much dead during that timing so that the Director didn’t want him to battle back but there was a fuck up with the first one with all due respect the first extra got to spit without ‘‘em answering but here’s the thing the second one is where ‘em said fuck it and turn the mic on
I saw the rest of the footage of him battling that girl. He gave her a hug. And I think she cried. Very dope of him to do that.
Yeah, she choked because she was a huge Em fan. He hugged her at the end.
He was losing his voice and the director wanted him to mimic rapping. Eminem decided to not do that.
Ohhhh. That would make sense

The director decided to hold a competition with crowd members which the ones that did the battle with Eminem were the ones that won the competition and yes M voice was pretty much dead during that timing so that the Director didn’t want him to battle back but there was a fuck up with the first one with all due respect the first extra got to spit without ‘‘em answering but here’s the thing the second one is where ‘em said fuck it and turn the mic on
Hey Cliff, you want to cover the Rap Olympics where Em came in 2nd?
I've always been curious who they thought was better than him.
