      @nifinland ปีที่แล้ว +16

@@valiensr1037 Yeah, there was a damn good reason to pit Hercules and Sun Wukong against each other in Death Battle.
The huge impact on the very concept of pop culture itself as we know it. It's clear Hercules' divine strenght was the base on creating Superman's most basic power which in turn kickstarted the entire superhero genre and Sun Wukong, a character from a so richful novel it's officially considered as Chinese mythology, is the base of SEVERAL anime with Dragon Ball and Goku as the entire anime culture's face.
So basically that was ONE WAY to make sure Goku wins against Superman, by having their sources of inspiration fight each other.

I have seen so many versions of the character in media, like when he was a villain of the week in Jackie Chan Adventures, where he was played by Jet Li in The Forbidden Kingdom, there's a character named after him in RWBY where his weapon is a bo staff that can be split into a pair of nunchucks that are also shotguns, Goku (self-explanatory), his role as MK's mentor in Monkie Kid (where he's also voiced by Goku's English VA), dude is a legend for a reason, and its also why I eagerly anticipate the annual continuation of Red's telling of Journey to the West on the Overly Sarcastic Productions TH-cam channel

First of all, Oscar, you REALLY need to do a Top Ten Staff Masters list! The world needs to know who in videogames can best pummel their enemies into submission with a pole/rod/stick.
Second, with regards to Ryuji... You forgot one other important reference: His Ultimate weapon is Son Wukong's staff itself, which Joker can get for him by transforming Hanuman into an item. Makes for a twofer of a Son Wukong reference.
Heck, although I'm probably reaching, Ryuji's base desires and having a Pirate for a Persona could be references to Pigsy and Sandy too!

You know, I think there is another aspect of Ryuji that matches well with Sun Wikong: His sin.
There is a fan theory that not just the major bosses are based around the 7 Deadly Sins as we've seen them (and not how you laid them out in your Blasphemous LP), but also your own party, with Ryuji being the Pride of the party. He wants to wear his Phantom Thief badge with honor and show it around, but can't because, you know, the law, and is often the one who makes the biggest slips. And, honestly, I can see Sun Wukong being the same: A VERY prideful man honed with his skills and accomplishments. Without the band restricting him, I am sure he would let that pride take him all over and showcase with no worry whatsoever, just like Ryuji tends to slip up (with the rest of the party aiding in helping him recover)

I want to take this opportunity to talk about the animated series Lego Monkie Kid. Essentially the continuation of the original myth set in a modern city, a term I use lightly, we follow the titular MK who become’s Wukong’s successor and protege. There are also reincarnations and descendants of the journey’s cast, such as Mei the dragon horse girl, aka best girl, Tang, the resident JTTW expert who loves using his stories to get free noodles, and Pigsy, MK’s adoptive father. The show has a fantastic art and animation style done by the same people that did Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as a killer voice cast such as Jack DeSena as MK, Johnny Young Bosch as Prince Nezha, and Sean Schemel as Monkey King. Yes, you read that right. Goku plays the monkie kid, and there’s more than a couple references to dragonball, and at least one for Get Smart of all things. The first season and opening movie are all on Amazon Prime’s streaming service…and that’s it. This is the meat of my post here. The subsequent seasons have all been dubbed, but they’re not on anything official here in the states, and it’s driving me bonkers! So please, I’m begging you, support this series! It deserves your love!

Okay, my watching of Overly Sarcastic Productions has trained me for this.
    10. That fish could also possibly be the dragon that transformed itself into a horse for the monk to ride on, who did very little in the story, but did have a few moments to shine. The dragon lived in a river, so taking on the form of a giant fish isn't the worst adaptation. (The Son of the East (CrossCode))
    9. I thought you were crazy at first, but... yeah, that sounds about right. (Rajang (Monster Hunter))
    8. Plus, Infernape and Emboar have a similar golden swirl pattern on them, of which kinda resembles Sun Wukong's crown. So more parallels! (Infernape (Pokemon))
    7. When you first described the historical figure, I knew that "master tactician" and "Sun Wukong" does not normally mix. Then you described the game version of him, and it all came together. (Hideyoshi Toyotomi (Samurai Warriors))
    6. I'm surprised that you haven't already done Top 10 Staff Wielders already. Make sure that's at the top of the list for the next Weapons Month. (Xiba (Soul Caliber V))
    5. I was waiting for this guy. Thank you, Wambu! (Stone Monkey Skull (Skul: The Hero Slayer))
    4. Fun fact; Rubyheart was confirmed to be a character meant to be in Darkstalkers, and Amingo was rumored to have been meant for Darkstalkers. SonSon would also fit well into the world of Darkstalkers, now that I think of it. Bottom line is, Capcom needs to make a proper new Darkstalkers game. (SonSon (Marvel vs. Capcom 2))
    3. Hooray for public domain! (The MOBA Monkeys (Several MOBA Games))
    2. Took a while, but yeah, I see it. (Ryuji Sakamato (Persona 5))
    1. Yay for character development! (Monkey (Enslaved: Odyssey to the West))

Pyroar from Pokémon Gen 6 is perfect for this list nothing against Solgaleo from the next generation aka Gen 7 or my most favorite Pokémon from Gen 4 Luxray but if there is one Pokémon that truly embodies the lion in several ways it's this Pokémon that you can get early on if you catch it's pre-evolution Litleo.
As not only is Litleo called the Lion Cub Pokémon but Pyroar is called the Lion Pokémon and this fearsome Normal/Fire type Pokémon has two looks it can take upon evolving from Litleo that are determined by the Gender a Pyroar that evolves from a male Litleo looks like your typical male lion, while a Pyroar that evolves from a female Litleo looks like a lioness with a ponytail.
And then there's the Dex entries the entries in both entries for X and Y a male Pyroar is described as being "a fierce regal Pokémon with a warrior's heart who won't back down from a fight if it engages in battle." whereas X and Y each have a different entry for a female Pyroar but still make it clear that she's just as ferocious and deadly as a feline warrior in her own right as the X entry states "Female Pyroar hunt in groups using a combo of teamwork and their firey breath to take down prey.", whereas the Y entry focuses more on the fiercely protective maternal instincts that a lioness has within the pride by stating "A female Pyroar is known to be very loyal and protective and will protect it's young out in the wild, or it's trainer by incinerating any and all threats with it's firey breath that can reach temperatures of up to 15,000 degrees Fahrenheit."
Also there's Pyroar's signature move Noble Roar you know how it's stated the roar produced by the King and Queen of Beasts is stated to bring any potential threat to it's knees well Noble Roar captures that essence in a way with it's effect being that it greatly lowers all of the stats of the Pokémon it's battling.
And finally we come to Pyroar's signature ability Rivalry which embodies the courageous heart and refusal to back down from a fight that a lion is said to have, remember how I mentioned that both Dex entries for a male Pyroar state that due to it's "warrior's heart" this Pokémon won't run or back down from a fight well Rivalry is the ability that embodies that "warrior's heart" and "fighting courage" as Rivalry's effect is "If this Pokémon engages in battle with another Pokémon of the same gender all of it's stats get a boost."
So yeah I think Pyroar from Pokémon Generation 6 is a perfect fit for Top 10 Lions in Video Games.

Andira from Granblue Fantasy shown at all in the video is interesting, unfortunately she's not part of the countdown or was even mentioned.
She's got the standard stuff with the staff, clones, headband, and riding on clouds. In addition, she's actually on a journey to "Tianzhu" which is described as a utopia her ancestors sought out for, "Tianzhu", which more or less translates to India, the goal of Journey to the West.
As for gameplay, her default SSR (Highest rarity in the game) revolves mostly around being support that can hit hard, her active either buffs allies to keep them alive with shields and heals or debuffs enemies with her unique stacking debuff statuses that references the three monkeys instead. Her passives, meanwhile, makes her hard to hit and possibly cover for an ally with the unlockable passive playing more to her active skills by making them available sooner. Her ougi (Basically the limit break you get by charging them with attacking/getting attacked) references SNK more than wukong just like most of her series of characters, interestingly her 5* version references the 1000-Armed Kannon, the goddess prominently featured as one of the guides in the original story
Her SR unit, meanwhile, references the three monkeys more, the ougi is just a lesser version of the SSR version's base ougi
Her Summer unit instead focuses on making her hit hard often, with her SSR version's skill effect being moved around and compressed, now no longer weakening the party, her third skill in particular is great to have her start with an ougi or have an ally do it, with her unlockable passive making it possible for her to unleash two at once, her third skill also interacts with one of her passives that actually grants her a debuff at the start of a fight, which is her golden headband, as long as it's around, her power with the third skill is limited to one target instead of the whole party. Her ougi here is using her staff to smack the enemy after enlarging it, possibly back to pillar size
Her animations references Wukong in various ways, such as multiplying and riding on clouds, in addition, as one of the 12 Generals, she's considered the Queen of Monkeys
One aspect that doesn't really appear in this video is how the Monkey King can be lazy sometimes, like when he was supposed to guard the immortality peaches and just fell asleep instead, Andira takes this and kinda put it to the extreme, making her like to sleep a lot

Something I want to think of based on number 1, what are some unique ways you could make a Sun Wukong-lite?
    Some core traits are:
    1. Monkey (duh)
    2. Tiger-skin pelt or known clothing
    3. Size-changing staff
    4. Rides on Clouds
    5. Clones from hairs
    6. Trickster archetype
I was imagining a Hoverboard with a Cloud design but a modern example could have a Cloud on a skateboard.

To expand a bit on the Warframe version of the monkey, each titular frame has four unique abilities they can use along with the space guns, and each one of Wukong's abilities parallels part of Sun Wukong.
    1) The first ability, Celestial Twin, creates an AI copy of you to help attack foes, going in for melee when you're firing your gun and vice versa. There was also a glitch where you could spawn as many copies as your computer could handle, but it's fixed now.
    2) The second ability, Cloud Walker, gives you a brief period of free movement with intangibility, which also heals you and your clone when it's used, making it useful both for scouting and as a panic button.
    3) The third ability, Defy, has Wukong and his clone become invulnerable for a short duration before dealing the damage back to any surrounding attackers and getting extra armor in proportion to the damage absorbed, a nice nod to the monkey's immortality.
    4) The ultimate ability, Primal Fury, brings out a special staff for you and your clone that can change size and shape to attack enemies, with its own customizable appearance and modifiers alongside the melee weapon you bring on the mission.

Sure, his cloning ability isn't part of the game (or it was so weak I can't remember it) but every other aspect of the character is a part of the game, especialy the character growth. And one part of the story we rarely see is part of the game too, the first mission's objective is litteraly to help him escape his rocky prison by removing the talisman Bouddha placed on it.

I'm not sure it been mentioned but the Rajang taking and consuming the Kirin's horn is actually far more important than just a standard power boost, it's actually what allows the beast to take the Golden form in the first place, in lore its assumed the rajang hunting the kirin is a "coming of age" ritual of sorts and the SS two rajang, furious rajang is a variant, meaning it's a normal rajang that became the furious rajang and its not a distinct species, an example of subspecies vs variant in monster hunter world monsters is the standard kirin vs oroshi kirin the standard uses lightning, the oroshi kirin has dark blue near black scales and mane and is a kirin that uses ice over lightning, (it wasn't in world but is in 4u) and val hazak the elder dragon of the vale has a variant called blackveil its a val hazak that ventured into the ancient forest and in-turn changed to the variant, a side note is variants have a cross chart to them of "random or can be induced" (can it be recreated in a controlled manner) and "temporary or permanent" val hazak has a temporary recreatable one it is caused by a val hazak spending x amount of time in the forest but when I goes back to the rotten vale it sheds the form and returns to normal. A random permanent is rajang its a Unknown trigger but all furious rajang are missing their tail and thus are in their normal rage state at all times (he gets golden fur when angry enough).

    • @peytonmacmillan9047

One other is magnamalo (the rise flagship) is a recreateable* permanent (It's not a 100% chance to do so it's a case of the trigger is known but it's low odds to "get through" as It were) the trigger is if a horn is broken but it has maybe a 1/1000 chance to successfully create a scorned magnamalo (the horns are a important feature to magnamalo (potentially THE deciding factor of mate selection if it's broken the magnamalo in question is more or less an outcast of its kind as long as it lives as the horns are unable to regrow once they break they will remain broken and the magnamalo is more or less forced into isolation and remain until they die that's what happens 999/1000 of them but that 1/1000 does happen when a magnamalo refuses to give up and turns the sadness and self pity into anger, hatred, and raw power that makes a scorned magnamalo)

With just a subtle reference to Wukong from Warframe made me happy, although just saying he can summon a clone without elaborating was a bit disappointing (no offense).
Wukong/Prime abilities are more than just killing his enemies, they can help in a situation to push any enemy away or escape to regain a strategy, 1) his clone can be summoned to increase survivability with it using any weapon equipped (use same ability to tell it to target an enemy, pre nerf was just fighting until the clone died with no limited ammo for guns), 2) Cloud Walker let's Wukong fly in a cloud to remove debuffs as well as moving fast for an escape or get to teammates that are in trouble, 3) Defy intakes any damage and reflects it back at enemies as well as getting more defense (in game called armor), 4) calls upon a staff that grows in length or width that could get any enemy in a long range but the other slams the ground making enemies float/fly into the air, and his passive let's him take fatal blows and then uses a token to gain a buff but only has 3 to use, the tokens used up are only limited per mission.
Sorry for the long explanation, I felt like wanting to mention this for people that don't know much of the character from the game. The skins on the other hand I didn't want to point out you can use that are very much to the lore of Wukong.

Fun Journey to the West Fact: Most interpretations of Sanzang have him portrayed as female instead of male. The reason most older interpretations of him in film (I may have gotten this wrong as the oldest version) has him played by an actress, this still is done today with shows like A Korean Odyssey and games like Fate/ Grand Order. This isn't always the case like in adaptations such as the manga series Saiyuki he is still portrayed as male.

Funny thing about sun rupal. He's often boiled down to his impulsive nature, but like he's also at the embodiment of the mind so he's actually a little bit strategic

Oh man, _Xiba!_ That's a hell of a deep cut for me. I loved SCV for what it was, but I honestly wish it got more time in development. Also Ryuji best boy

I'm a little sad that Augus from Asura's Wrath didn't make it in. He's got the aesthetic, extendable weapon, impulsiveness, love of fighting, stupidly strong, and you even fight him on the moon, aka the Heavens.

Air element Skylander Fling Kong is also inspired by Sun Wukong but not anywhere near as cleverly as these ten entries.

Actually, I think the Fuecoco line best represents Ox rather than Snake, for the following reasons.
    1. Crocodillians and Snakes, despite having certain similarities (both reptiles, carnivorous, often preyed upon (caiman and thread snakes)) AREN'T close related. In fact, crocodillians (as well as terrapins and dinosaurs) are actually closer to birds than they are to snakes.
    2. Male crocodillians are called bulls and female crocodillians are called cows.
    3. If you look at Skeledirge's skull pattern, it vaguely looks like a bull's skull, albeit without the horns (although the flames protruding from the sides of its mouth could take the shape of horns).
    4. Skeledirge's in-game cry sounds like a bull's bellow. (And yes, crocodilians can bellow.)
    5. Considering Fuecoco's relation to apples when it was first released, there exists an apple called Sangre de Toro (Bull's blood).
I know it feels like a stretch, but still.

Huh. Interesting. So maybe the trend is unintentionally still going or it was Game Freak's plan all along for misdirection.
Even though Skeledirge is awesome, I was actually hoping for a minotaur Fire-starter.
