Nifty! I wonder if that little gadget would work on my large chest freezer? It needs defrosting about once a year!! Love your channel...do you have an entire house tour video including your second kitchen? That would be neat!!
Ahh Another awesome gadget! I just love seeing these. We are looking for a vintage refrigerator. I remember Mama defrosting your's as a kid and being from SE Louisiana it was the closest thing to snow we had. Mama would even put it in a bowl for us to take out and throw at one another. I also remember very vividly, being told that if we ate it we would die. LOL
@@LaciFayTheVintageGirlNextDoor LOL Yeah, it was pretty nasty. But, I'm living proof it definitely isn't deadly. I think that went along with parents telling kids raw potatoes will give you worms.
Somehow I don't think the 50's were big on health and safety when it came to electrical appliances...but it's a clever idea and you was very brave to try it! I would've been too scared lo! x
Oh my gosh! I sure wish we had one of those when I was a kid. One of my chores was to help my mother defrost the freezer. We would put pans of hot water in the freezer and take a knife and chip away at the ice. It was hard work (especially for a kid) and it took a long time like all day. The price of this gadget back then would have been a bit prohibitive for many households. For example, the average weekly family income in 1952 was around $57.18. So this gadget would have cost more than a whole week's salary for the average American household. Other than that, it's a really nifty gadget. The only vintage gadgets I have are two electric percolator coffee pots. I think percolators make better coffee. I bought on eBay two percolators. One is an 8 cup percolator and it is very pretty. The other one is a 4 cup percolator and it is cute. I make coffee every morning in the larger percolator. The smaller percolator I use to make hot water for tea. Oh, and on a different topic, I like our glasses. My mother had glasses like that. I was going to have lenses put in them but then my house fire destroyed the glasses (and everything I owned and one of my cats died in the fire). Thanks for this fun video.
HI Laci, It looks like your Radiant Defroster worked pretty good !!! I love your videos testing vintage gadgets. Your video reminded me that I really should defrost my refrigerator right now!!! Its a 1935 General Electric. Thank you so much for another wonderful video!!! You and your husband keep safe and healthy through these trying times!!
I love your funny intros! I had an apartment refrigerator which needed defrosting as well as a small office refrigerator (we just unplugged it on a chosen weekend and covered the floor around it with towels!). This would have been a great item to have. Parents and grandparents also had to defrost theirs. Remember those ice cube trays!
I had to help my grandmother with hers/every three weeks lol//but i loved it.when i was 18 i had my first rent and had a frost free in 1976//it was great..im buying one soon like yours.
Last weekend my Cuisinart broke and my kids wanted homemade pizza. I brought my Grandmom's up from the basement it was one of the first ones from the 70's or maybe early 80's. It weighs a ton and the motor sounds like a car engine but it made the BEST PIZZA EVER! It was so nice to think of her too!
I have a '56 Coldspot that doesn't have automatic defrosting. My mom always used a plug in defroster similar to the one in the video but it was a square shape. I find it easier to empty the fridge, open the door and freezer door and aim a fan towards the ice. It works faster than the defroster.
I love your vintage gadget vids. I would love to see one on your new vacuum cleaner once you get the parts for it. Maybe compare cleaning power with a modern vacuum?
Success ! I was quite leery of putting an electric appliance in with dripping melting ice, but it sure did work ! Back in the early 1980s, I lived on my own for the first time and the fridge that came with my tiny apartment must have been from the 40s or 50s. The freezer was so tiny and just a block of ice lol tfs 💗💗💗
I wish that my Mom would have had a gadget like that. She would put pans of hot water in our 1950's Kelvinator to melt the ice, then chisel it with a knife, cussing the whole time! I think one of the happiest days of her life was when the frost free fridge was invented. :)
Ooooo, I used to DESPISE those ice trays. As a kid I'd have to get the ice and my hand would stick to the lever every time. Still gives me heebie geebies. And I do remember defrosting the fridge. What a chore. That said, several people in comments are still using their 50's appliances. Says something about things having been built to last.
We have a stand alone big freezer (fridge size) from the mid 2000s close to the end of the 2000s. My grandfather has to defrost it once every other month using a heat gun because he wants it done in an hour or less depending, he doesn’t want to leave it unplugged like you do yours even though we have a deep freeze chest to put the items in.. In the freezers attached to the top of refrigerators or like yours I would see a benefit to defrosting because it will allow more space to be had. The steam you see is like when you rinse a hot pan. When the water heats it’s going to sizzle away.
I love how you seek out these vintage items and actually test them out rather than just collect them - that’s so cool AND environmentally friendly 😊
Thank you! I have fun testing them. This is one I will continue to use.
You even make watching a refrigerator defrost fun! ❤️

LOL Yeah, it was pretty nasty.
It did work quite well! Thank you! Uh oh. Better get defrosting! 😊
Haha thank you! Yes! It was very handy indeed!

I had to help my grandmother with hers/every three weeks lol//but i loved it.when i was 18 i had my first rent and had a frost free in 1976//it was great..im buying one soon like yours.
This was so interesting! You have a lovely kitchen and Your hair looks amazing!
Thank you!!
Oh that’s awesome!
Seeger - then Whirlpool made The Coldspot Refrigerators - yours is so nice - you always have the fun things 💚
Thank you! My research said it was by Kenmore, a Sears brand.
Laci Fay The Vintage Girl Next Door - Yes - they are - made by Seeger then Whirlpool for Sears Roebuck
Love the ice cube trays ❤❤❤
Thank you!
Interesting, this is great! I remember we had an Admiral
I have a '56 Coldspot that doesn't have automatic defrosting. My mom always used a plug in defroster similar to the one in the video but it was a square shape. I find it easier to empty the fridge, open the door and freezer door and aim a fan towards the ice. It works faster than the defroster.
Your refrigerator is so cool. Love the 1950th
I remember those ice cube trays!
Yes! Glad I can use mind again lol.
Me too made best I've cubes but would rip a nail omg ouch!
Yes my Dad was the only one that could get them out!
So much fun watching your videos. Love it
Thank you!
Glad it worked!
Me too!
Yes! I was a little worried too, but it turned out great! Oh no lol.
NEED THIS FRIDGE!
This was fun! Can't wait to see the next vintage try video!
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
It's so extra exciting that you got it in the original box! Also love your lavender dress, it suits your hair.
Thank you! Yes the box was cool, it doubles as a display.
I'll have to try and find one of these for my refrigerator. I have a 1954 GE and this sure would come in handy.
Oh yes! I believe there are a few on eBay.
You are so lucky in America being able to find things like these. In Australia not easy they tend to junk everything.
So fun! I’m always rooting for the gadgets that they will work. ☺️
Yay! Haha yes me too. This one did not disappoint.
It's amazing how small the freezer area was. Love the videos! New Subscriber.
I wish that my Mom would have had a gadget like that. She would put pans of hot water in our 1950's Kelvinator to melt the ice, then chisel it with a knife, cussing the whole time! I think one of the happiest days of her life was when the frost free fridge was invented. :)
Oh yes! That would be a lot of work.
I love that stove 😍
My Mom had one. It was kind of fun pulling the ice out. I will say, I love the style of old fridges but hated the freezers. They were always froze up.
Haha yes I could see that happening for sure. Honestly, I don’t use the ice trays much. I agree about things being built to last for sure.
Your channel is a gem!
Thanks so much lovely!
Hello laci im your new subscriber.. I like the way you introduce us how to live in 50's its a big wow for me .. I like it.
