  • It's a new vintage gadget video! Yay! I had a lot of fun testing out this 1950's Osrow Radiant Refrigerator Defroster for you all, and showing you a bit more of my vintage Coldspot refrigerator. Coldspot is a Kenmore brand from Sears. My model is 1949-1952/53. I couldn't find a specific ad, or match the model number to know what year it is for sure, however in 1952/53 they came out with an automatic defrosting model, so I know ours is older than that. Let's test out this vintage gadget!!
**If you decide to test out any vintage gadgets of your own, please be careful. You never know what old electrical products will do. **

Yes! I believe the pans of hot water would work faster than this device. I am 67 years old and have defrosted many a fridge. Also.I still defrost my small chest type freezer. I use pans of hot water. I miss these old fridges. I couldn't wait until I could afford a frost free but these older ones lasted longer and worked better. And by the time you needed to defrost you needed to clean out anyway. Also I always unplugged to defrost. Older appliances had more eye appeal and lasted more than a couple of years. I put my food in an ice chest while I defrost. I am an old fogey, ha!♥️

We love using vintage gadgets in our home. Most of our serving dishes and trays are vintage or antique, because they are so much prettier than the modern ones of today. Some of my favorite gadgets are my metal ice cream scoop, our juice-o-mat (was grandmas), pasta rollers, cookie cutters, our Boes Dayton nut cracker and my metal measuring spoons and cups. I also inherited a complete set of 1971 Permanent multi-core cookware from my Grandmother. Most Vintage items work better and definitely last longer in my opinion.

@@Kubulek17 Having used ones from the 1960s to today, I have to strongly disagree. Old dishwashers were total crap. You had to wash the dishes before you even loaded them because they didn't even have an internal garbage disposal. And they ran your electric bills so far through the roof that it would probably be cheaper to hire someone to wash the dishes for you.

I went to buy a new fridge recently as needed a smaller one and the guy in the shop asked me how old mine was and I said 15 years. He said definitely dont get rid of it as the new ones can break down in as little as a year or two as the components used are so cheap compared to old stuff. Stuff was just better made back then so worth keeping. This was very honest of him because he lost a sale as a result of that xx

Oh my gosh! I sure wish we had one of those when I was a kid. One of my chores was to help my mother defrost the freezer. We would put pans of hot water in the freezer and take a knife and chip away at the ice. It was hard work (especially for a kid) and it took a long time like all day. The price of this gadget back then would have been a bit prohibitive for many households. For example, the average weekly family income in 1952 was around $57.18. So this gadget would have cost more than a whole week's salary for the average American household. Other than that, it's a really nifty gadget. The only vintage gadgets I have are two electric percolator coffee pots. I think percolators make better coffee. I bought on eBay two percolators. One is an 8 cup percolator and it is very pretty. The other one is a 4 cup percolator and it is cute. I make coffee every morning in the larger percolator. The smaller percolator I use to make hot water for tea. Oh, and on a different topic, I like our glasses. My mother had glasses like that. I was going to have lenses put in them but then my house fire destroyed the glasses (and everything I owned and one of my cats died in the fire). Thanks for this fun video.

Last weekend my Cuisinart broke and my kids wanted homemade pizza. I brought my Grandmom's up from the basement it was one of the first ones from the 70's or maybe early 80's. It weighs a ton and the motor sounds like a car engine but it made the BEST PIZZA EVER! It was so nice to think of her too!

My Mom had one. It was kind of fun pulling the ice out. I will say, I love the style of old fridges but hated the freezers. They were always froze up.

A quick easy trick to do this is what my parents did in the 60s and 70s we had an old refrigerator if you boil a pan of hot hot water on the stove and then you just set it inside the freezer and it defrost all the ice for you and then you just kind of get sponges and kitchen towels it out all the water and ice for you!! I hope that helps too!!

We had a fridge like that when I was young and what we did to hurry the process of cleaning freezer, we had pans of boiling water and set them in the freezer. Then as it melted we used a knife to peck off the big pieces. Fun times :)

I love your funny intros! I had an apartment refrigerator which needed defrosting as well as a small office refrigerator (we just unplugged it on a chosen weekend and covered the floor around it with towels!). This would have been a great item to have. Parents and grandparents also had to defrost theirs. Remember those ice cube trays!

People see $6.95 and think that was cheap. Well, dollar-for-dollar, gasoline was more expensive than it is now, and the cars in those days achieved a lot less miles per gallon than they do today... plus, no cup holders! That fridge of yours takes me back; my grandparents had a similar one.

  • @PeacefulAutistic

We have a stand alone big freezer (fridge size) from the mid 2000s close to the end of the 2000s. My grandfather has to defrost it once every other month using a heat gun because he wants it done in an hour or less depending, he doesn’t want to leave it unplugged like you do yours even though we have a deep freeze chest to put the items in.. In the freezers attached to the top of refrigerators or like yours I would see a benefit to defrosting because it will allow more space to be had.
The steam you see is like when you rinse a hot pan. When the water heats it’s going to sizzle away.

I remember pulling that plastic tray out and trying to empty in the sink was always a mess, spilled it several times. And I remember not being good about defrosting regularly. Sonny and Cher used to have a variety show and she did a skit where she would open her fridge and it needed defrosting real bad :)

Ahh Another awesome gadget! I just love seeing these. We are looking for a vintage refrigerator. I remember Mama defrosting your's as a kid and being from SE Louisiana it was the closest thing to snow we had. Mama would even put it in a bowl for us to take out and throw at one another. I also remember very vividly, being told that if we ate it we would die. LOL

I take everything out, if it's summer I wait until it's time to shop and put the condiments in a vintage Coleman cooler, the freezer stuff goes in the deep freeze.. In the winter I just pack a box and set it in the porch. I open the door and put a fan blowing into the fridge. I remove all of the trays, shelves and keepers and the bottom front chrome panel to access the drip pan.. I thoroughly wash everything and hand dry. Meanwhile I'm catching the falling ice and mopping with towels that can go in the bleach wash. I get very hot water and wipe the inside cavity and all the door shelves. Then I let it sit for a bit before returning temp selector. Close the door for 20 minutes, then replace everything when there a slight frost in the freezer compartment. I have a 1950 NORGE. Saves energy has two prongs on the plug and only runs a few times a day. It's like a big ole Cadillac Lead Sled, and never disappoints. If there's an outage, my food stays cold for days. Thanks for Sharing!!

Success ! I was quite leery of putting an electric appliance in with dripping melting ice, but it sure did work ! Back in the early 1980s, I lived on my own for the first time and the fridge that came with my tiny apartment must have been from the 40s or 50s. The freezer was so tiny and just a block of ice lol tfs 💗💗💗

my vintage collector friend has that same coldspot fridge that was her gramma's. the glass got broke during the move. she replaced it with a thick piece of pexiglass. her gramma use to put the spaghetti pot in the freezer full of boiling water to defrost. towel on the bottom to soak up loose water. you cant leave it to melt, it softens the ice & then you chip at it with a butter knife or metal spatula & big chunks come off to be chucked into the sink. then the soaked towel thrown in the washer...all good till the next time. she says all in, takes about 1-1 1/2 hrs.
