I have the imperial set, seems to work okay but didn’t really notice that it had a taper. If I am using a regular chisel for a mortise, I don’t actually want the taper. I use the levering of the waste to register the mortise to the proper width with each cut and help me stay on course. Will go and take a look and see if the Narex ones are tapered today. I certainly didn’t notice it, they are very nice chisels - bevel and mortise type.
I love my Narex Premium and paring chisel. However, I was really lucky when I started off that I got a pair of old Marples morticing not only in amazing condition, but were also brilliantly sharpened. This was a great teaching lesson of how a sharp chisel is supposed to feel. Unfortunately I terrified of using them both until I knew how to sharpen to at least an acceptable standard as I always had a reference point.
