      Hi Canadian In a T-shirt, from your experience which invest is best for short term and how much roughly could you get a return if you invested $10,000 for one year?

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@johntes3329 Do not invest in the short term! If you need this money one year from now, do NOT put it in the stock market. Keep it in a High Interest savings account instead! In the short term, the stock market is volatile and you basically have a 50-50 chance of losing money but in the LONG TERM, over the course of 5+ years, you are essentially historically guaranteed to make a profit!

    A tip I learned opening a Questrade TFSA: *you don't need to deposit the initial $1000 all at once* . you can deposit a minimum of $1 into the account at anytime, the account just won't be officially activated (you won't be able to trade) until you have the $1000 min balance in it.

    • @CanadianTShirt

    • @CanadianTShirt

      I intentionally brushed over that section and the part with the legal agreements quickly since I don't want to be putting Questrade's legal stuff out there, just to be safe. But filling out that section should be pretty straight forward! Just listing your preferences on how you would like to receive information, earnings reports, stockholder voting events (since you are a part-owner of the company) and other materials. Remember do not invest in the short term.... if you need money for a down payment in the next year or two, I wouldn't recommend investing in the stock market since there's a decent chance you can lose money. In the long term, 5 years or more the stock market is basically guaranteed to be profitable but the short term is far riskier....

      Check out my TFSA video to learn all the rules regarding contribution room!
      th-cam.com/video/i_bWf1NyUbE/w-d-xo.html
      If you sell stocks inside your TFSA and make a profit (capital gains) this does not affect your contribution room directly unless you decide to withdraw that money out of your TFSA and then on January 1 of next year, you will regain that withdrawal amount. The main point is that any profits you make in your TFSA (capital gains or dividends) does NOT count as contributions! It's totally tax free and worry free!
      Let's say you maxed out your TFSA and then you made an extra $5000 of capital gains inside your TFSA. This $5000 will NOT push you over the limit. You get to enjoy that extra $5000 and continue to invest with it! I hope that helps! =)

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you invest with WealthSimple Trade, I would ONLY hold TSX stocks. WealthSimple is a GREAT platform for CANADIAN investments because of the commission free trades. There are still a lot of limitations with WealthSimple which I will talk about in my comparison review but in terms of minimizing fees, you can't beat commission free trades. Just make sure you only hold Canadian investments with WealthSimple. If you want to invest in US stocks and ETFs, definitely use Questrade. WealthSimple's conversion fee EVERY time you buy or sell a US stock will bleed you dry.... (it's how they make money lol)

      If you haven't maxed it out, your son can give you his money and then you can contribute that money into your son's RESP and you'll be able to earn free government grant money (up to $500 per year) on top of the tax-free investing. Hi Adrian,
    3 questions...
    1) what the advantage of buying/owning share over buying ETFs, why buy into 1 when you can buy into a 'pool of many'?
    2) if your investment value goes below $1000, do you get penalised for that in QT
    3) I've never used the bill payment (add payee) option with my bank, what I do is fund my account/make a payment from the app (investment app or credit card app). Am I missing out by not using the bill payment option?

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great questions!
      1. Buying ETFs is generally a safer, more conservative approach than individual stocks because you are diversifying, but I like to do both! ETFs give you great exposure and diversification but remember they still charge a small management fee usually around 0.05% to 0.8%. This is much smaller than Mutual funds which usually charge between 1.5% and 3% but owning individual stocks has no management fee at all! The way I see it, invest in ETFs to get exposure to the whole market but on top of that, you can double down on specific companies that you really believe in by owning stocks to get even more of a reward.

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For the other questions:
      2. If the total value of your investments across all Questrade accounts falls under $1000, they will charge you a $25 inactivity fee at the end of the quarter (3 month period)
      If you have more than $1000, you never have to worry about this fee!
      But if you drop below $1000 you can still waive this fee if you are under the age of 25 or if you deposit at least $150 during this quarter or if you make AT LEAST ONE trade during this quarter. If you meet any of those 3 conditions, you will NOT be charged this inactivity fee!

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For question #3:
      I have never used that approach through the app.... how long does it take for the money to arrive in Questrade?
      For me using the bill payment method, it arrives the next business day so that's super quick and good enough for me so I never experimented with the other approaches. I know that the interac method is instant but it doesn't work with Visa Debit cards so I never got to try that one either.... I hope that helps! =)

    Adrian, I found your channel last week and have watched almost all of your videos by now! I really appreciate the value of information you provide in a such a easy to understand manner, but most importantly the authenticity you display.
    What advice would you give to a student who will be graduating soon, living with their parents rent-free, and has 30-40k student debt to pay? If they were to have a decent amount of money saved up, do you think it’s wise to invest it in ETFs and other stocks? Or should they keep that money for a house down-payment?

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Nadeem! Welcome to my channel and thank you for watching all of my videos! 🙏
      Congratulations on graduating soon! I know how exciting and terrifying it can be, especially when you have to start paying back those student loans....This is a difficult question to answer since it depends on so much (your income, risk tolerance, time horizons, etc) But generally this would be my advice. If the interest rate on your student debt is low, around 3%, then I would suggest that you focus on investing rather than paying off your student loans faster. With investing, you can earn far more than 3% per year in returns but of course it's not guaranteed. If your student loans are higher, let's say 6% then you can still get better returns with investing but paying off your loans is a GUARANTEED 6% return which nice and gives you peace of mind. In that situation, I would probably do both. After you have an emergency savings fund filled up, I would invest about half of your excess money and use the other half to pay off the loans. If you're planning a down payment on a house in the next 3-5 years, you should also start adding money to a High-Interest Savings account for that as well! I hope this makes sense! I will be making a video soon on how you should invest / save money based on different common scenarios for Canadians so stay tuned for that! =)

    • @rolliemaniquet6858
      @rolliemaniquet6858 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I could go back to being young and living with my parents, I would continue to educate myself on finances because we are not really taught this in school. (Especially TFSAs and RRSPs for Canadians.) All of the information I have learned about DRIP accounts TFSAs and RRSPs has been from watching Canadian in a t shirt videos on those subjects. Also, good book series is Rich Dad Poor Dad. It was written 20 years ago, but it is still very relevant. I read it on hoopla through my local library (for free). You should take advantage of living with your parents by being careful with your money. Don't overspend on things you don't really need just to seem cool or be like every one else. Pay off your student loans quickly, which will build your credit and reduce the amount of interest you have to pay, so they will get paid off even quicker! Good credit will help you in your future. Watch Canadian in a t shirt's videos about investing in long term DRIP accounts. I wish I would have been wise and gotten myself at least one DRIP account going when I was in my 20s. Good luck to you!!

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hey guys! The Air Canada question always comes up, I personally don't invest in Air Canada.... I just think there are better investing opportunities to take advantage of and with less risk during this crash. Even though I'm not a fan of Air Canada, I would agree with everyone above... until you sell, that $2K "loss" isn't real. This is the most difficult part of investing: being able to maintain your discipline and not give into fear or panic. That being said, if you are overwhelmed with stress and worry and you can't bear the thought of losing your entire 10K investment, that doesn't mean you have to cash out the entire thing! You can always take little steps: maybe sell $1000 worth of stock to give you peace of mind. Sure, you're locking in a $200 loss but at least you have that $1000 cash to count on. Again, I'm not saying you should do this, but a lot of beginners worry themselves sick and they only see two options: ride it our or sell it all! But those are not the only options... I talk about dollar cost averaging in my videos, where you buy stocks over the course of weeks or months rather than all at once and the SAME method can be applied to selling stocks. I hope that helps and thanks everyone for joining in the discussion! It can be incredibly helpful and reassuring to hear other people's points of view =)

At around 3:50 you talk about maintaining a minimum balance of $1000.00, but in another video you stress the importance of not leaving money as just cash in the account. My question is, do the stocks I purchase count toward that $1000.00? I am thinking they do, but wanted to be sure. I am enjoying your series and chomping at the bit to start trading! Thanks very much!

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks buddy! I'm happy to hear that my video is helpful! Yes you are absolutely correct! You do NOT need to hold $1000 cash, you just need to have $1000 inside your Questrade account, so the total amount of cash + stocks must be $1000 to waive the maintenance fee. In fact, due to Covid they relaxed this condition and took away the maintenance fee even if you have less than $1000 now =)

      Yes you can definitely transfer money and investments from another bank into a Questrade TFSA. I'll be making a whole video on how to do that but it's pretty straightforward. You can transfer the cash amount from your bank to Questrade. The good thing is that this will NOT count as a TFSA withdrawal or contribution since this money is never leaving the TFSA umbrella! Also, be prepared that your bank will likely charge you a transfer fee, usually between $40 and $150 but the good news is that Questrade will reimburse you this transfer fee up to $150. Withdrawing money from your investment account and into your bank account takes 1 to 2 business days. In fact, I just made a withdrawal on Tuesday and I received the money in my chequing account on Wednesday afternoon. This was from my Margin account though, if you withdraw from a registered account like an RRSP, it might take a bit longer since it goes through the CRA. I hope that helps! =)

      I naturally talk fast and I have a LOT of info to get through in 20 minutes. If I didn't talk fast, these videos would easily be over 30 minutes and no one wants that. This is why I put the text overlays and I also manually write out English subtitles to help people follow along! If you'd like to slow the video down, hit the Settings (gear icon) and change the Playback Speed to 75% =)

    Thanks Adrian....another great segment...congratulations on blowing through 22 + K subscribers....knowing which investments to hold and what types of accounts are less affected for US withholding taxes and other tax considerations is important knowledge . Does Questrade help with other fees if a person wants to consolidate all their holdings to a Questrade account? In other words if a person is charged with fees from their banking institution to transfer an existing TFSA/RRSP/LIRA to a newly opened Questrade account will Questrade help with those fees?

    Looking forward to your Questrade vs. Wealthsimple video. I’m 100% Questrade like you. Q? When a company pays a dividend, how long does it take to show up in my account? Also, do you get a pop up alert 🚨 of the deposit?

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You got it Michael! If the dividend payment day is on a business day (Monday to Friday when the stock market is open) the dividend should arrive first thing that morning. If the dividend payment day is on a weekend or holiday, it will show up the next business day. If you go to your Account Activity, you can see all transactions including when dividends are paid and if a DRIP is applied to your dividend =)

    Hello Adrian! Huge fan here. I'm a Canadian with a disability, I was wondering if you could create a video about the RDSP as well as managing a self-directed account (such as TD or BMO, sadly no Questrade). It's a complex account but there is no good information for people who want to self-direct. Thank you!

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I can certainly make a video about the RDSP, there is a ton of info to cover but it can be very powerful! Make sure you max out those government matches! =)

      @alicebrown-dussault3526 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CanadianTShirt awesome! That would be so appreciated. While there is a lot of information about the matching aspect, most people end up getting convinced by their banks to invest in mutual funds (currently getting 3%) for lengths of 30-50+ years. There are no videos about investing that capital.

I am planning to open an account with Questrade and use your promo and will be transferring TSFA which takes 10-20 days. my question is would that mean I only have either 20 or 10 days to use up the $50 credit depending on when my amount will be fully transferred? Because I remember you said we have 30 days to use the $50.
