  • Photographing Pied and Spotted Flycatchers. Two very attractive species that are usually quite easy to photograph, although finding a Spotted flycatcher today can be a challange. I use the 150-400mm Olympus lens and the OM-1 camera body to photograph both species. The woodland light causes problems with highlights when the sun is shining and the only solution is to return later when the sun is hidden behind cloud and the light much softer.

    Hey Mike,
for the pied flycatcher, there is a quite easy way to attract them to your "garden"
They arrive very late in spring, so most of the "housing" is already taken up by tits.
At least here in germany, we have two kinds:
The blue tit and the great tit.
They are okay with nesting next to each other, but they will defend the "nesting territory" versus other tits of the same kind.
So if you put up 3 houses very close to each other: one will be taken by a blue, the other by a great one, but the third one will be left free, since the blue and the greater will fight off any other birds of the same kind.
They wont fight a flycatcher though, so once they arrive, they will find an empty spot and will happily go there.
This works for northern germany, i think it differs from region to region, thing is: provide enough nesting room and put it close together.
My dad figured it out more or less by accident, but since then, several nature conservation groups used this method to great effect to establish stable pied flycatcher populations here.
    Best regards,
    Benjamin

Awesome tip, thanks for sharing. I hope I'll get a chance to try this in the coming years.

@@benedux you can even close the opening of the housing for the flycatcher before the first birds arrive, wait for the other housings to be occupied and then open the flycatcher one. So to guide the flycatcher to the most beautiful/photogenic housing. Maybe plant a little tree as a perch next to it :) good luck!

Thanks again for so many tips in your videos, I learned a lot. About the background, I just like the lighter spots etc in stead of an a smooth background, sometimes i like the background more then the subject :-)

Lovely little birds. I have yet to spot a pied flycatcher myself but I think I have photographed a spotted flycatcher in the past, unless there is something similar I might have confused it with, not being an expert! ! Very interesting info about how to photograph them. Thanks as always. :)

Hi Mike when you have the light that's best for you are you able to retrieve all the detail in the black and white feathers ? or do you adjust accordingly to get the best from the darker or brighter feathers ?
Thank you Mike again for all your terrific videos, especially the ones made using the M 4/3 cameras and lens.

    • @MikeLaneFRPS

In softer light there will be more detail in the whites and any adjustments will be less.

      @MikeLaneFRPS  ปีที่แล้ว

@@ulflundh5813 I do not notice a difference in quality except the GH6 is capable of 4K at 120 fps which I use a lot. The OM-1 is HD only at 120 fps.

Your lens is 500mm f5.6 (with TC). With the crop factor 2 that yields an FF equivalence of 1000mm f11. If it were 1000mm f5.6 as you said, it would need to have a diameter of 1000mm/5.6, which equals 178mm. Which your lens doesn't have.
