    Discoid roaches are legal in Florida. Also they are similar in behavior and breeding needs. Also leagal in florida are the green banana roach ,horseshoe crab roach, death's head roach, palllid roach and surinim roach. Why I mention them is because some species of roach do not look exactly like the common german or american roach and some people get creeped out by them. Maybe you could find an suggest other breeds for those who get creeped out by roaches. I only mention this as I am in a few bearded dragon groups and a lot of people are creeped out by Dubia's. Also the austrailian roach doesn't look like a common roach and is legal in Canada. Florida and Canada are 2 places in north America that don't allow dubia roaches.

      @@ellesreptiles your welcome I have a whole list. The reaso I do is because I was kind of pushed into my Bearded dragon. Don't get me wrong I truly love her but like you I like to reasearch first. Anyway I ended up doing things backwards and started a crash course information overload research project and fixed most of my mistakes and seem to be doing fine now. Thanks to you and Facebook and many other youtubers andbearded dragon groups.

    If it moves my guys ( Sherman and Scooter ) will pounce and eat. Scooter is a bit more picky, where as Sherman is Ninja Beast Dragon. I guess I hit the jackpot with them and their salads, they love fresh salads, but will not touch the dehydrated salad mix. I bought both at Pet Smart . I am a care taker, my patient wanted one so we got two juveniles. Scooter is a little larger than Sherman. I’ve had iguanas and snakes and crested geckos, but never bearded dragons. This is how I found your channel. Thank you for the education.

    Thank you for doing all of these...especially about Beardies. I did my research for literally well over a year before getting one again. I got one when I was younger, but was pretty ignorant & didn't have a very good experience. Not to worry about the beardie, he went to a breeder after a few months & was not harmed by my ignorance, thankfully. I've had Iguanas when I lived in Florida, but always wanted a BD. This time around, I did my research well...but still have picked up many great tips from your videos, since Maximus "Max" Decimus Meridius came into my life. I love your attention to detail & your precise way of speaking that even a novice can understand. So, Thank You Very Much!

    I also cut the lettuce stems off and use them as food for my feeder bugs, which I have quite a collection of at this point (mealworms, superworms, bsfl, dubias and a culture of flightless fruit flies) but I have 18 reptiles and only 3 of them are non big eaters (2 royal pythons and a cali kingsnake)
    Thank you for making this video available to us beardie parents. Hiccup and Chani thank you as well lol. It’ll be nice to have a reliable list I can reference for safe veggies to expand the variety of food my dragons get to try.
    Hiccup is a huge fan of dandelion flowers and leaves and bell peppers. Chani is a little more of a picky and finicky eater. She only eats every other day it seems like and she likes bell peppers the most out of the veggies I’ve fed her thus far. She’s also a newer addition to my exotic collection and after having her for about a month or so she seems to finally be settling in more, though she’s still very jumpy and will puff her beard out any time I put my hand inside her enclosure, even if she’s at the other end of it. I’m working on getting her used to me reaching in and fiddling around with her water and food dishes and cleaning up her feces and urates. Fingers crossed that she will finally settle in and see me as a beneficial occurrence in her life rather than a huge scary predator.
    I’m definitely going to have to get a couple tank conversion kits so I don’t have to reach in at them from above and perhaps that change will help that aspect of the “taming” process I’m struggling with at least.
    Thanks again Elle. You, ma’am, are awesome! ☺️💕

    • @ellesreptiles
      @ellesreptiles  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely need to get more BSFL, but I've never kept large quantities for prolonged periods of time. Do you have to do anything special to keep them?
      And good luck working with your beardie. She'll settle in soon! Hopefully 🤞🏽💜

    • @kerseykrewzoo
      @kerseykrewzoo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ellesreptiles I looked up diy bsfl bins here on TH-cam and found a few different ways to do it. If you get a good sized tub/container so there’s room for the flies to fly around and some corrugated cardboard for them to lay eggs in, that’s the most important things from what I’ve researched. You can rig the bin up with ramps for the bsfl to climb up and smaller containers at the end to collect them. I would search for diy bsfl bin and find the design you think would work the best for you. Once you have the bin set up, just toss your fruit and veggie scraps in and it’s ready to go. I just got my bsfl a couple weeks ago so mine are just in one of the tall clear cup containers for now until I can get my bin and set it up. They say the black bin with the yellow lid works really well for bsfl as they don’t like light and you may need a heat source but I can’t remember.
      Hope this helps! And thank you for your kind words about Chani. She was not treated really well at her last home I don’t think so I’m going slowly and being as patient with her as possible. 😊

    Thank you for another great video!! I actually feed pretty much everything you mentioned except the lentils, I’m gonna have to try those. I also buy the bushels of greens b/c they last longer & feed the stems to my feeders as well. I breed Dubia & mealworms, also keep superworms & BSFL’s, don’t know how I still have some alive since Dec & Feb, think I’m breeding but not purposely, lol. I’ve been wanting to try silkworms & butter worms, but haven’t been able to get them yet. Also, I didn’t know about softening up the squash! My girl loves butternut squash & she now finally eats the yellow, acorn & spaghetti squash, but I cut it really thin or use a potato peeler. I might have to get a cheese grater. Fair heads up, some channels recommend against the giving of any sugary fruits (especially modern super sugary fruits from grocery store) or even squash etc. that has sugars in them to dragons unless you're willing to brush their "teeth" on the semi-regular as well. They can get tooth decay in their "teeth" (not real teeth but a bone that acts as teeth) and it can be lights out for the beardie if it gets bad. At the least keep an eye on their "teeth" if you feed fruit etc.

    I recently got a Baby Beardie, and I've been having a tough patch with feeding it. My beardie eats mealworms and salads every day. You prob said it in your video but is that good to feed baby beardies that every day. Your video helped me. Love your accent btw.

    • @ellesreptiles
      @ellesreptiles  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's awesome that your baby is eating salads everyday! 🥰 Mealworms aren't they best staple, just because they're pretty low in nutrition, and pretty high in chitin, so they can be a bit difficult to digest.

    I usually feed mine dubias and occasionally trow in worms. She gotten bad stomach the last times I gave her crickets, maybe I just been really unlucky with my batches. when it comes to veggies its anything red, especially red bell pepper.

    Hello, Elle and Zasa! I sure hope I spelled her name right so she doesn’t get an attitude lol. Whelp, it’s official, I’m a 50 y.o. new momma again! Starting all over when my youngest baby is 25… what was I thinking?! I just adopted a new baby boy beardie last night 💙 🦎💙 and I’m in love. My daughter has one and he’s almost 3y.o. and so stinking cute with such a personality on him. My husband and I’ve had to give up our home and all due to loosing our business with Covid so we had to downsize into an apartment and it’s just really difficult for me with a dog (but I must admit I’m a MAJOR dog lover, have been my whole life). While my ex husband and I’ve had a larger range of animals during our time together within the past 20 years I’ve only had dogs and fish. So this is going to be a big adjustment for me and especially since I really don’t know a whole lot other then what I’ve seen or been told by my baby girl. Some of the things she’s actually told me or been doing however, I’ve already heard in your videos today that aren’t correct but for the most part she’s on target. It sucks though I am one of those people who like you are a bit wigged out by crickets 🦗 and in my case live in Fl as well 😩. I saved the list in your video HUGE THANKS for that and I’ve taken several notes from other videos since this ole gals brain don’t remember quite like it use to lol. But since my daughter lives out of town and you definitely seem to have more experience is there any particular pointers you can give me? Also, while I wanted a girl I ended up with a boy so now I don’t have a name for him, you seem to be AWESOME at picking out cool names so any suggestions? Well I’ve wrote a book to you by now (sorry) and really hope to hear back. Gotta go and finish some more of your videos. I’ve already subscribed to all your channels except twitter as for some reason I’ve never gotten into that one. Thanks for all the guidance and advice 💙🦎🙏🏼

    Teddy, our beardie rescue, loves his dubia roaches. I am disgusted by them, but it’s satisfying watching him eat seven or eight in one feeding…definitely a snap, crackle, pop that makes me smile…. I haven’t tried much in the way of veggies yet (we haven’t had Teddy for even a week yet). He ignored the leafy greens I offered him. I can’t blame him. Turnip greens are nasty. 😂 We have large parrots that eat a lot of veggies, so now when I make chop for parrots, Teddy gets to enjoy some, too. Speaking of eating, Teddy the Turd layer left me a little cleaning project in his cage…time to fight the feces!

    Locusts are a better alternative to crickets, less smell, less likely to bite your lizard, not noisy and you need less of them to feed an adult beardie

    I use the Snapware tupperware for my greens and my collard greens never go bad before I go through them for my one beardie. Mustard greens go bad faster, but these containers have kept greens fresh longer than anything else I've found. I also get bunches and cut them myself,

    Bearded dragons would get no fruit in the wild and and it can even lead to mouth rot according to latest studies. Can’t post links but reptifiles has link to the paper written on this.
    Also recent paper written says BSFL calcium is only accessible if it’s been macerated first which would not be achieved through mastication.

    If the food is too tough for the dragon chop it up to smaller beds so they can fit it in their mouth and their bite force should be able to crush it I know this because I had my bearded dragon bite me once but not intentional it was because she was trying to eat something she wasn't supposed to I saw this stuck my finger in her mouth trying to get it out I did get it out she was not happy but I got it out found out that force was way strong and I know how strong it is so I don't have to go and find this really big rock or whatever to crush it either way she's happy I'm happy I know exactly what I need how much force is for her to be able to crush it I know it all I done the tests I'm great with it the only thing is verifying that she actually enjoys the food I don't know why it's kind of like a human thing where you eat something for a while and you just don't want it she no longer eats crickets for some reason so it's just roaches superworms hornworms and occasional trying to get her to eat veggies add fruits never forget the fruits

    Don't listen to her about the hornworms the size does not matter as long as they can actually eat it so make sure it's at least smaller than its mouth needs to open about halfway I had one that was bigger than my middle finger my bearded dragon is about full-sized she eats the whole thing she raise down for a bit but doesn't sleep she is watching what I am doing and relaxing and then later goes for some roaches sometimes the kale or whatever veggie I put in there I also feed apples if she doesn't the roaches will eat it and produce more roaches
