      Yeah, they tend to have the most to say, and they pick up on little details that regular people miss, like the lack of visible tendons in her neck to show she's not straining herself. Also, as in this video, they never wonder if it's really her or not like other people often do. Vocal coaches always know it really is her voice, and they know how she's doing it, but it still shocks them and blows them away even more because they understand how difficult it is to do that.

    This session was a result of them doing a re-recording of this song, after finding out that it sounds very differently with their new and still current drummer Vlad. So it was kinda made to show off his skills. And yes, Eugene on the bass is a beast! The entire band is immensely talented.

      I remember my first time hearing Jinjer, and I feel like a lot of the focus on Tatiana comes from the focus of a lot of pop artists on the vocals. Luis Nunes A little pitchiness is fine, even from a classical standpoint (M.M. in tuba performance, myself). Having someone that understands the mechanics of producing a vocal tone explain the pros and cons of a certain approach should always be a welcome thing. Yes, of course that song came out 5 years ago, and Brittany has evolved since then, but that doesn’t mean there’s no merit in hearing a vocal coaches take on them. That "sound" is a false chord scream. I can do that as well. Took me approximately 2 months to learn to get the tone, but probably 3-4 years to get it down well enough (and safe enough to not hurt myself) to perform. 15 years of doing this and I do not have any damage to my voice. I'm glad you noticed the complete lack of tension because thats the trick most vocal teachers get wrong. It is ZERO tension and completely "voiceless". The sound is entirely made by relaxing and holding your vocal cords open and the folds above your vocal chords flapping about, then ultimately just shaped into words by your mouth. If you use any of your voice or throat, it WILL hurt you. I learned from experience that if you feel it or feel tired or strained, you're doing it wrong.

    • @Mr.Ekshin
      @Mr.Ekshin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Ummm... no. You really have no idea what you're talking about. Tatiana's growl is 100% produced by her false cords (vestibular folds).
      The 'diaphragm' is merely a muscle that causes your lungs to draw or expel air. You can't actually produce any sounds with your diaphragm. I assume you've misunderstood all those vocal coaches who talk about "singing from the diaphragm". They are talking about proper air management, not actual sound production.

    Not trying to take away from this, but there's a lot of layering going on with her vocals (you have to listen pretty close, but it's there). While It's absolutely awesome, it's not quite as live as you would think. You couldn't really get such a clear sound through multiple mics in the same room, because the sound from all the instruments would bleed into the surrounding microphones, causing the engineers to go insane trying to mix everything. So, while the video portion is very much live, the audio is likely individually tracked as per usual with recording sessions. I'm glad you brought up the fact that she was handling the microphone, too, as it makes more of a case to this point. Still an amazing video and I absolutely love Jinjer, just a bit of trickery on Napalm's part.

    You love how they incorporated their drummer. They did this video to really show off their new drummer who put his spin on the original take to this song. He made it sound SOO much better than the original recording. The dude is a beast of percussionist!

    There is a lot of editing on this. That said, the recording schedule for their latest album was very compressed due to also doing 152 shows on several continents that year, and Eugene says she improvised most of the vocal compositions with very few takes. Tati's evaluation was less charitable, saying "I wasn't prepared" haha. She is very talented, but there's a lot of years of work that went into making the most of that talent, including 4 years practicing growls before starting to use them in performances. All told she's been performing in various bands over half her life, since she was 15.

    There is a band called The Agonist which was founded 5 years before Jinjer. They have a similar style. The original singer Alissa White-Gluz is now with Arch Enemy and there for cant show her full skill set. I would recomend Panophobia if you need a video, otherwhise Ideomotor (8min Version). And if you are hooked check the new lineup too. The go to songs here would be In Vertigo or Blood as my Guide (there is a clean greek part in it, i now undrstand the sirens myth) 😜

    Always gives me a smile when anyone spots the musically erudite composition & performance from Eugene on bass- I'm a hobby bassist myself, & he sickens me!! LOL
    All 4 of them are outstanding at what they do tho. They are one of those rare multiple-lightning-strikes bands. I mean, how many metal drummers are classically trained pianists who can also be convincing on guitar & bass, never mind anything else?! :)

    I'm SO glad you mentioned the bass player! I too know nothing about him, and I blame that on sheer laziness on my part, to not do the research. However, once you dissect this song, it's really hard to find the superstar. Unfortunately, the anomaly of Tatiana's vocal prowess often overshadows the tallent of the rest of the group.

    Dear Mr. Wholesome, i really enjoy your reaction/criticism videos on bands like Tool and Jinjer, and although this is a request not on a band, but on a cover by a singer, i would highly recommend you to check out "a perfect circle - passive (vocal cover)" by "Hungry Covers", because the emotional drive i felt when i first listened to it was one of a kind, and I'd be glad to share the same powerful feeling with an amazingly honest person such as yourself :).
    It would be great to see your reaction on that one^^

    She's grabbing onto the mic because this is also a performance. If it was an actual "take" recording, she'd be singing into a screen and not holding onto anything but her sanity. I assume this was mixed into other takes and multi-tracking - like her vocals and second guitar parts. Still live, but a combination mix.
