I'm sorry, I purchased a set of these today in 245/75/R16 LT Terramax AT ,well I can agree with one thing , these are an economy tire . They are not an AT , they are acceptable and quiet on the highway , would be excellent on a sedan or city SUV or maybe for a truck pulling a trailer on pavement or solid gravel but as soon as you are off road or into anything softer than dry gravel they are very poor performers. In the soft gravel or sandy roads they track poorly and like to go where the road tells them not your steering input. Then into sand, grass and dirt - well they simply do not have the capacity to advance and just dig and sink themselves.Zero flotation and essentially act like a pizza cutter , they don't even try to move forward they just spin and go into the earth. I do use tires in "all terrain" and varying conditions throughout the year but I think the sales pitch of all terrain should be tossed out to be fair and label as an all season or highway tire. The tread width is also quite narrow at just around 7" I measured.
About a 20% grade on dry grass I need to use 4 x4 with these as they spin out. even less of a grade in sand/gravel/grass combination which also either had to back or or use 4 x 4 just to get moving.
I went to test in a sand and gravel pit( zero grade)and as soon as these are on top of anything even slightly loose and just coming off idle they immediately drop and fail to float or advance and this was fairly packed but as soon as you break the surface you are stuck, even in 4 x4 I had to work my vehicle quite hard to get out of the area, far more effort than they should have been required.
I can only blame myself as I needed new tires to pass inspection and these were the ONLY ones available in my area for a factory size 2006 GMC 2500 , yeah the load rating and 10 ply are there ( so they say) But I should have been more specific when asking for ALL terrain not ST tires ( some terrain). Several people told me how I'd be surprised by their performance, they were right , I sure was surprised!
You get what you pay for, buy once cry once, buy twice, well, now I'm going to be near $550 per corner of the vehicle plus install as once mounted these tires are yours and I cannot make use of them. I will mount my Duratracs that i removed with 40% tread left and weather checked as they are still miles above these.
Please spend the extra $$$ and step up as unless you are using these for 100% road use you will be very upset once out and off road.
