  • 2019 looks to be a good year for right-wing populists in Europe.
Be it Italy, France, Hungary, Poland or Germany, many European countries are experiencing a shift to the right. Right-wing populists are expected to make significant gains in the European Parliament elections this spring.
Right-leaning party representatives have an agenda: they want to dismantle to the European Union. Guido Reil of Germany’s AfD party believes the best way to do that is by going to Brussels. "It is easier to destroy something from the inside than from the outside." Joseph Sauvage, a cafe owner in Denain in northern France, backs Marine Le Pen's Rassemblement National party, because he doesn't want to see people in Denain abandoned. "When the factories closed, the small shops closed. There is nothing here, economically speaking. No work. It’s also changed politically. It used to be communist. But that changed with the end of opportunities for the working class." His view of migration has also changed. "Immigrants are entitled to the same social benefits without ever having worked here." Like Joseph Sauvage, Luca Davide, a member of Italy’s Northern League party, says he's had enough of living in a run-down block in a small city full of foreigners. "We don't need drug dealers, we don't need illegals! We just want to live here in peace and safety." In early February 2018, a right-wing supporter targeted Africans in a drive-by shooting rampage. According to Northern League leader Matteo Salvini, the EU shares "moral responsibility” for the act because it "filled the country with illegal foreigners." Messages like these are met with support. Evidence of just how a state’s society and institutions change when right-wing populists come to power is evident in Hungary. Many judges, organizations that support refugees or human rights, scientists, and journalists speak of massive restrictions in Orban's "illiberal democracy". But a lot of young Hungarians starting to push back.

But on the other hand, Europe has to stand its ground against other big blocks like China, Russia and the United States. So if we don't want China, Russia or the US to dictate all of European policies, we will have to stand together and cooperate, and not fight against each other. The EU doesn't fund anything, that money comes from national governments who take it from tax payers.
There is nothing wrong with being an independent state. Countries should be able to run their countries how they see fit without outside interference and work together when necessary.
You don't need a political/monetary union for countries to work together on an international level and to get along. The USA and Japan have been doing just fine without entering into a political union since WW2, as do other countries.
A political union is not needed and only those who believe there has to be, have alternative motives...taking over countries and that's what the EU is trying to do, take over nation states bit by bit through the backdoor.

Its also easier to control countries that have given up their sovereignty. When the people give up their voting rights and give it to unelected leaders that come from bankers, corporations, pharma do you think these leads care a hoot about the citizens. A few vetted immigrants who respect the country they enter is one thing but too much, too fast only fuels resentment and the same thing would be true if the situation was opposite. Hard working ppl are sick of the burdens placed on them by communist leaning trolls coming out from left field like the goon squad - theres a reason the rights called the right. There can be compromise if mature ppl stop trying to change others and change themselves- its so sad to see ppl who believe the only answer is to let it all hang out and pass the responsibility off thinking theres no consequences - its ok to let ppl disrespect and complain about the same ppl who welcomed them- its about how we act and it shouldnt be an issue to let others have different opinions than your own- that and compromise or no one wins

Two comments full of assumptions! And no refraining from name-calling, very typical. Bravo to you and bravo to you!
3 minutes in the video we see the framing: right-wing, populist, and anti-muslim. In this docu you don't get to hear the obvious, sound reasons against ever-growing power structures such as the EU is. No individual sovereignty, less freedom, more corruption and more-dangerous corruption. It's an infrastructure bound to be abused. Just like in Lord of the Rings, first everyone had their own rings, the elves, the dwarfs, humans too, but then, one ring was made, one ring to rule them all. And guess what? No-one could handle that much power, it corrupted everyone. That is the foundation of true liberalism and economic freedom. Have power structures small, disperse, bottom-up instead of top-down. As the saying goes: power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutly. The only way to tackle this is to not go in the direction of globalist power structures. The media is the left-wing globalist tool, I'm no one's tool. I'm just a guy with a bit of knowledge about history and liberalism, other than that, just minding my own business. This whole idea of not thinking critically and following what is fed to you is what keeps you away from true liberal views. And yeah also right-wing voters get mislead but they are most definitely not the only ones. The coin has two sides. You are on the opposite side. True liberalism is on the edge.

@@tomghzel Yeah. All you said classifies you as a right-wing, populist, with your identity politics, nationalistic agenda and Neo-classical economic ideology. All of these views are not things you have learned but ideas put into your head by simpletons and buffoons. The media reports the facts for the most part, unless you confuse opinion pieces as news (which I'm sure you do).
Your Lord of the Ring analogy fails because Sauron did not share his power, was not elected, did not do anything other than take by force, which is what I believe you would prefer. The EU are elected officials. You claim corruption abounds but fail to realize that the most corrupt are the right-wing nationalists pushing for an authoritarian regime, which will inevitably turn into a totalitarian nightmare. But please, be my guest and pursue your agenda. However, when you are in a Francoist state and you can't step sideways for fear that you'll be imprisoned or killed, don't come crying to the comment section. All you'll receive are jeers and sneers.

Far right ideology always ends up with authoritarianism. Not very informative. No real contrast between the sides have been elaborated it's mostly demonising one side

As a philosophy student, surprised and glad to see a Central European University scholar on this show. I don't go there but CEU is highly-regarded for philosophy. Sadly the CEU has since moved out of Hungary to Vienna due to persecution from Orban's government.

    Thanks DW for this video!
I'm the victim of Right Wing people in Hungary when i was on a visit to Budapest!
Just by observing my skin color they called me "Turkish" and "Muslim" but i'm neither a Turkish nor a Muslim!
They asked me to leave the supermarket and blocked me purchase water and they started chanting some slogans!
I tried to convince them saying im a tourist but they didnt understand (as They can't speak or understand English)!!
One thing European shouldn't forget that they were also an immigrant during WW2!!

Doesn't work like that. Africa is a mess, thanks to countries like France and UK. And middle east is a mess thanks to USA. I am sorry, but Europe has to be a beacon of hope and help fix the problems they created.

The only Real problem I experience daily is the lacking of effective communication all through the parliaments. The Right wingers are much to comfortable in their role of being a victim to the opposition.
Nothing but complaining on all sides.
Constantly arguing while using rhetorical strategies that increasingly divides people. It seems that people not even trying to get into a dialogue with their opponents. All of them are so busy pointing Fingers at each other without not even thinking on finding any badly needed solutions.
This won’t work out for anyone 😡🤬🤯
